Just another point. Although I now run Navigon as well as TOMTOM5 I notice that TOMTOM constantly gives a longer journey time (32mins more to blackpool, 48 to coventry and 1 hour 5 mins to London) I think this might have something to do with the fact the new maps for Navigon now have speed limits for all major UK roads (and some not so major as I found out yesterday) and also allows you to change settings from standard car (staying below max speed limit) to fast car (staying at speed limit). I just thought I would mention this. Also sometimes TOMTOM completely resets my PDA for no reason but it puts it back factory defaults and I have to reinstall everything.

With the Medion, I was able to travel 7 miles into a 13 mile Journey, approx. 15 minutes, before the map finally appeared this morning.
Have you tried checking Settings>system>memory>running>programs (or install 'close all') to make sure you have no other programs running but Navigator? Also have you tried moving any new programs installed since you bought the PPC to SD or MMC card to leave as much memory in the PPC to run Navigon.
Unfortunately, due to my unexplained hard reset the other day, I have a barebones PocketPC with only MNav5 installed and running. Still no improvements though :(

I have sent Medion an eMail for support, but have also just found an hotline support number. Will probably give that a ring tomorrow.

    Thanks anyway.

Point 1. what I am saying is it doesnt matter if you can plan the route before a signal... . Even though you can plan before the signal you still have to wait for a signal for it to verify the route so this option doesnt really mean anything.

    2. Maps are version 605

    3. are you using the R3 update or just the normal firmware. The one I had would only lock onto 5 sats but after R3 I get 9 but for some reason the most TOMTOM will lock onto is 6.

    4. I do a lot of driving around (campsites, fishing) and I have 58 different types of POI loaded.

    5. POI-Warner is now available for Medion Navigator 5 ... Go to thier page and you will see it.

    6. with navigator always getting a lock in under 30 seconds and then calculating a route to coventry (317Mls) or London (412Mls) total process is 55 secs for coventry and 1 minute for london. Tom Tom takes over 1 minute for lock and verifying route for both. In fact because of where my house is I have to wait for the signal to kick in as TOMTOM always wants to send me out of my place by the longest route possible and round streets I have never used in my life. If I use it from where I stay it has to use 4 route corrections. With Navigators learning capability it knows I leave by the same route. TOMTOM constantly ignores this.

Another point. Used TOMTOM all day today in works van. Covered over 230 miles in a 12 hour period. I have done this with Medion and Navigon no problem.. Maps are totally up to date. Today TOMTOM had 4 roads in Glasgow city centre as one way (when they arent) tried to send me down a one way street and lost signal 14 times. Also kept switching roads as well and couldnt keep up with van and showed position as being behind almost all day. TomTom also showed my speed as zero for 10 minutes today and put me in a field for 3 of them. Also this morning for the first time I tried TOMTOM with a cold start (usually when I compare I use Navigon/Medion first then switch. I drove to work (11miles) and only when I stopped for a few minutes at work did TOMTOM get a lock.

It looks like some people have different views on the products. Medion Navigator does have some issues and I suppose because it is cut down TomTom might look like a better option but when I bought it that was the biggest mistake I made. Navigon is now my first choice as it is the complete version of the medion and by far in my opinion superior to TOMTOM5.

Wow, it's pretty amazing how different each person's experience can be.

    (replying point by point)

    1. Are you sure? Only mine seems to have the route ready immediately and just waits for a GPS fix. With Medion it only calculates the route for me once it has a GPS lock. Maybe Tomtom is so quick I just don't notice it calculating?

    2. I haven't gone any long distances yet but the maps I have seem pretty up to date so far.

    3. I'm just using the firmaware that came with the PDA.

    4. 58?? Damn that's a lot. I don't need anywhere near that many.

    5. Oh well, too late now. Good to hear it's available though.

    6. I used the tomtom twice today and both times it got a lock in around 30 seconds. I was navigating on the fly and by the time I had found my destination the gps had locked. Calculation happened so fast I couldn't even time it. Again, these were short distances though. BUT having said that Medion would take the best part of 1 minute to calculate a similar route and didn't lock on any quicker.

For the guy who's having problems mine always takes a long time to get off 0% then gets stuck again at 97%. Calculating a 25 mile route with 1 stop-off point in the middle would take around 1.5 - 2 mins.

One other thing I noticed today was that Tomtom's instructions just seem clearer to me. For example, when coming to a roundabout it will actually give a direction (ie stright across, right, etc) as well as the exit. With Medion it just said the exit which for my wife was confusing.

Overall, it seems that everyone has a different experience of the software though I'm starting to wonder whether you are comparing Medion or Navigon Navigator with Tomtom Scooter - if it's Navigon then maybe that explains the differences in our experiences.

I transfered TOMTOM to my Medion PNA175 today and ran it along side Navigator 5 (Navigon). It was worse on the PNA than on the PDA. It keeps giving me a totally green screen with the arrow in the middle. Also noticed there are updated maps for tomtom but they want 60 euros for it. Navigon give thier map updates for free.

All tests I did with the PDA were with MEDION. It would be unfair to compare TOMTOM to navigon with the added features it has. The only one I did with Navigon was the ETA where tom tom added on the extra 30 minutes to 1 hour for journey times.

I agree with the voice instructions for medion... they can leave you wondering. Navigon tells you the road names as well. It will tell you to take exit 21 and join the A874. this is always good for verification . Also Navigon shows you up coming roadsigns on motorways as well as thier speed limits.

Thanks for the info, I too have the % thing happening.

    This mornings timings were;
    • Time to reach 1%: 4 mins
    • Time to reach 97%: 1 min
    • Time to reach 100%: 3mins
    • Time between 100% and Pie-chart timer:2 mins
    • Time before Map is displayed 4 mins
    • Total: 14 mins :(

I have not phoned the Helpline yet, as I thought I would try out a High-Speed SD card first. Got one on order now (x150 speed), and will contact Medion once I am armed with some more facts.

    If you've got XP:

    Start>My Computer>Mobile Device

and off you go "to open to examine files residing on the PPC from the PC"

    or am I missing something?
All I get is 'cut, copy' and below etc. no 'open, print' etc. so equivalent of 'properties' for files actually on the PPC. I can only open and examine them if I copy across to the PC. The PPC only appears as an 'item' at all in particular file-manage windows.

Open up My Computer and try double-clicking "Mobile Device". You should get a list and, iirc double-click the icon marked "pocket PC". (not at that PC atm so can't verify names)

You should be able to access the files on the PPC and any SD card plugged into it.
