Personally id tell them that im going to check weekly/periodically
Let them delete the history and cookies if they want (But that will only make me more suspicious)
have you OWN password protected log on on the machine and check the ACTIVITY REPORTS through the parental controls
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/parental-controls.aspx
He cant delete them (At least not through normal channels). But dont tell him HOW your checking his computer.
Youll soon know if hes legit or not......

Point is, the OP pays the bill, regardless of privacy, if the lad objected, he could always opt to pay for his own service, or get used to the idea his pc may be monitored. (My boss reminds everyone at work and rightly so).

Wholeheartedly agree, although i dont want to monitor his lappy directly.
However I do want to monitor the websites that he connects to using my isp

I feel that if you are asking this 'how to' question, you very may have well lost the battle to your tech savvy youngster as he will always be one step ahead. If you have not lost now, with unlimited access and ability to question others, I fear you will very shortly have lost the war.

Not lost the battle at all, he has far less teccy knowledge than me! However, I wouldn't mind betting that some of his mates are far more knowledgeable that me.

Change your routers DNS servers to use openDNS (Free) and then you can check the IP address accessed (not really spying as it only tells you the site and not specific pages). If there are sites you do not want on your network you can login to openDNS and add them to your blacklist.

Okay not the most secure way as someone to could just use another DNS server or a proxy site, but at least its a start.

    edit: just read bookduck's post

Now there is a good point and i will investigate it further, thanks to you both!

i have keylogger spyware on every single machine, the kids no nothing about it, i dont care if its an infringements of anyones rights its my house and my machines and my dam right to know what they get up to , if the kids dont like it if they ever find out first , then tough they can move out.

Imagine how your children would feel if they knew that their own mother trusted them so little, she even resorted to spying on everything they did?

People died for the right not to have the State spying on everything they did - do you honestly believe that it's in any way appropriate for you to spy on everything they do? What next, will you fit them with a tracking device and a microphone so that you can further spy on absolutely everything they do?

And to be honest, every minute spent looking at logs is a minute less with your children. You know, the ones you talk about protecting.

Leo - it might be worth blocking many of the common P2P ports. Bittorrent et al don't use many different ports - and blocking them in the router is relatively painfree. Could be easier than going down the OpenDNS route, anyway.

Ok - so you want to block access to some sites and not others..

IMHO the solutions given so far are not going to do what you want.... just blocking him net access is going to be a pain - what you need is some content access managment so you dont have to be spying on hime 24/7 which will really grait with him and may cause problems. I cant quite remember if the DG834 comes with something like this already - you might want to check through the options.

An alternative method is to replace the router with something like a Draytek Vigor 2820n router. These are around £170~ and are a very "techy" router - they are more designed for corporate networks rather than home.... however built into these are various filtering systems...

you are able to block all the known file sharing networks, you are able to block specific websites and you are able to block certain catagories of websites.... only downside is these effect all computers - however these work really really well

openDNS is a good system - however is EASILY worked around - esp a 17 year old kid - just google "get around openDNS" will show up loads of results but could be a good start and is free!

another option for you is a software based solution - remember a program called Net Nanny?? The only downside to these is in a lot of cases - these are easily worked around with a bit of knowlage of computer systems!

IMHO - the best - although slightly costly option would be a router with some good content managment filtering - withouth access to the routers configuration - you cant get around it unless you conntect to somebody elses network!

Thanks for the information, that router looks very impressive.

Very expensive as well, although not to be totally discounted if things went over the top

That is the same as me saying "who are you to have an opinion?". Which I'm not saying, just making a point.

Considering I'm a child of a dictatorship, I've probably got more reason to judge than most on this site. I can see everyday the effects of people who lived under such a regime - and to consider applying similar effects upon one's own offspring is nothing short of scandalous.
