By default, any wireless PC that is configured with the correct SSID will be allowed access to your wireless network. For increased security, you can restrict access to the wireless network to only allow specific PCs based on their MAC addresses. Why would you want to know what sites your 17 year old son has been visiting? Isn't he entitled to any privacy?0

Of course he is, however if he starts to bring in illegal stuff, who carries the can? Him? NO
The name of the account holder is responsible, and THAT IS ME
Once I am happy that he is acting responsibly then I wont have to chuck him off the network, will I?

I'm guessing your main concern may not be !!!!!!, of any kind (like you say...17yr old...what's the harm?!) but may instead be downloads (illegal or otherwise) and breaching the cap imposed by your ISP. I suppose changing ISP is out of the question? The netgear doesn't have QOS, so you're not going to be able to limit the throughput to his machine, combine education and trust? I do know my 16yr old daughter would happily download the internet via limewire, torrents etc...except she has K9 installed on her machine...and everytime she searches for p2p apps, or clicks a link one of her friends sends it gets blocked
...she's not overly happy with the situation, but I also have a cap and it's much easier to monitor if I don't have to worry about another machine churning 10gb/day without me noticing...til the bill arrivesUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

Fair enough. I just wouldn't give him his own access if I didn't trust him. I would have hoped he knew what was acceptable and respected you for giving him his own laptop and remote access.
Are you concerned about hard !!!!!! or illegal music downloads? As I would have thought the latter was more of a concern coming back to you.0 -

Agree, I would not have dreamt of looking at the browser history of my son at that age.
If he wants to check out the latest Thailand Lady Boys, then let him.
It is only his laptop that is going to be full up with junk.
What exactly are you afraid he is looking at?
If it is legal filth then what is the problem?
I take it nobody else is going to be using his laptop so a younger child will not click on something by mistake.0
