Stopping a teen from accessing the internet???

  • I'm guessing your main concern may not be !!!!!!, of any kind (like you say...17yr old...what's the harm?!) but may instead be downloads (illegal or otherwise) and breaching the cap imposed by your ISP. I suppose changing ISP is out of the question? The netgear doesn't have QOS, so you're not going to be able to limit the throughput to his machine, combine education and trust? I do know my 16yr old daughter would happily download the internet via limewire, torrents etc...except she has K9 installed on her machine...and everytime she searches for p2p apps, or clicks a link one of her friends sends it gets blocked :)
...she's not overly happy with the situation, but I also have a cap and it's much easier to monitor if I don't have to worry about another machine churning 10gb/day without me noticing...til the bill arrives

Thanks for that, but I don't want to install any software to spy on his machine, just want to do it from the router.

I have no intention of changing my ISP, after all, why should I? I am happy with their service and my connection rarely has down time.

He IS aware that he will be bumped off the system if he starts doing illegal stuff. It has been spelled out to him!

I take it then you are worried about illegal downloads from torrents?

Fair enough. I just wouldn't give him his own access if I didn't trust him. I would have hoped he knew what was acceptable and respected you for giving him his own laptop and remote access.

Are you concerned about hard !!!!!! or illegal music downloads? As I would have thought the latter was more of a concern coming back to you.

Respect, hmmmmm... some people have it, and some people don't.

Not too sure really, probably both although illegal downloads is the more likely scenario.

As I have said above I carry the can for everything that is downloaded through my ISP. Our teen doesn't!

Agree, I would not have dreamt of looking at the browser history of my son at that age.
If he wants to check out the latest Thailand Lady Boys, then let him.
It is only his laptop that is going to be full up with junk.

What exactly are you afraid he is looking at?
If it is legal filth then what is the problem?
I take it nobody else is going to be using his laptop so a younger child will not click on something by mistake.

    Thanks,

No younger child involved in our household, although plenty of his mates will be, of varying ages as well!

Illegal !!!!!! and probably more importantly illegal downloads.

Thats not quite so bad then. I thought you were concerned about what !!!!!! he was looking at, in which case if that was illegal, it would be him that was responsible as it would be on his laptop. However, if you are concerned about illegal music downloads, then yes, I think the record company would be looking for you and I can understand your concern.

Although, no disrespect what so ever, (I know they don't come with a handbook!) if I didn't trust him, I just wouldn't let him have his own laptop & remote access. I would monitor what he did in the livingroom. He'd soon have to prove he could be trusted.

    Good luck & happy christmas

Thanks for that, Merry Xmas to you as well.

I do see your point about the lappy being his, but as you rightly have said, they would take me to court, and it would be up to me to prove that I had no knowledge of what had been going on.

Can't be bothered with all that, it's easier and MUCH less hassle not to let it go that far. I will just chuck him off the network.

He could always use the free internet access at a well known burger bar, and let them have the problem.

I have thanked each and everyone who has contributed to this thread (up to this point :) )

You say you want to stop his access if he did anything illegal.
How will you know what he gets up to?
I think you just need to have a good talk to him, tell him the consequences and then, I am afraid, you will have to trust him.
If he breaks the trust then that will be another thread.

Ok, he is skint...if mass downloading starts to happen then it will probably be illegal.

I have netmeter installed on both my lappy and desktop and I have a daily record going back for the last six months, so I know exactly how much data is uploaded and downloaded each day.

If I suddenly get a huge bill from my ISP, then I will know something is wrong.
