Have I understood this correctly Polkadot - your Doctor is recommending BMI of no lower than age minus four?
It is Missy, he says BMI is a guide only, so it's better to consider the percentage of fat in your body rather as an ultimate instruction. He reminded me that as I start exercising more-I might notice my body getting smaller, but my weight declining less as time goes. Reason being muscle contributes to weight also. So basically when you do your BMI calculation it only see's your weight, height (and age in some calculations if I remember right). But it doesn't take into consideration how much of your weight is muscle and how much is fat. So if you take an two people who are the same height and weight (I'll use 100kg's as an example). They will both have the same BMI, I think of roughly 34,but one might have 16% body fat versus the other ones 40% body fat (i.e 16kg's versus 40kg's of body fat. Obviously their health levels will differ also.

I haven't yet had my fat percentage measured as I'm waiting for an appointment with the dietician. But it really made me aware of how confusing and misleading the calculations can be. Which is why Im now of the opinion that its important to chat with a DR before setting a goal-they inveribly know your health history and can advise the healthiest numbers.

see when i had my body fat done on the boots scales, it was 34%. Is that 34% of my whole body is fat? cos it seems pretty high. I know i have big hips and the alike, but still seemed alot.

See now, my first comment has confused everyone-I'm sorry. Hopefully my answer to Missy makes more sense. The heart of my message is that I have discovered with the help of my doctor (and I realise it may not be the gospel answer) that whilst using the BMI can be helpful, it is more of a guideline and it makes more sense to look at the mass ratio to reach a healthy goal.

Im sorry if my wording wasn't correct. I only wanted to share the information I was given as it made more sense to me.

That is what the body fat measurement means. I didn't know the boots scales had a body fat measurement. Now I want to go see coz Im pretty sure mine will be rather high-Ive been dying to see the dietician so I could find out.
  • hahaha, no worries polka, but at my age just taking 4 off my bmi = I'm clearly not eating enough choc & chips:D .
Totally agree with you over bmi being a guide only though and always good to check with a Dr. Mine's very happy with mine being 25, which is the upper limit accord to the stats. I need to lose another 9lbs to get back there at the mo.
Mambury - I did also think that aiming from the start to have a bmi of 20 may not be the best approach. That is very low down the scale on the range and you are probably setting yourself up to fail there. If I went as low as bmi of 20 i would look ill and head would be way too big for body. Where as missy is very keen on the exercise and finds that that bmi suits her and doesn't have to have a miserable life to keep it there.
I'd say set smaller short term goals (how about to lose 10% of your body weight, that's common recommended goal) and an over all goal of a bmi of 25, to be reviewed when you get nearer?
Getting below a bmi of 30 will be fantastic. Look foreward to sharing your achievement when you get there.

Vix - that is fantastic re your own weight changes:T And again to hear you happy wth your body is music to my ears. You are right, just focus of a little toning. Great news re the swimming plans.

Chart coming along nicely Victory - can I just confirm that you have an over all gain of 2.75 lbs since the last chart and a total loss therefore of 85.5lbs?
EDIT: FFM - just to double check re the chart. Before last sat you were 1lb over your maintain weight. On saturday you added another 1.6lbs to that. So at the moment you are 2.6ls over your maintain weight?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

I absolutely agree that BMI is a guide only - good muscle mass will mean you have a higher BMI without being obese. :)

But I find it hard to understand that one's BMI should be no less than one's age minus 4. That would mean that at the age of 60, I should have a BMI of 56! Even if I had no body fat and were made of pure muscle and were really tall, it's unlikely my BMI would be that.

So, yes, I totally agree that two different people can have the same BMI but completely different levels of body fat - but that's relative to muscle mass and fat mass - not age. To have a recommended BMI of your age minus 4 assumes that as you get older, you put more muscle mass on, and for most people that's not true. :)

Maybe I'm being really stupid here about the age thing, but that's my view!! :D

HHE -1 HOUR AND 2 MINS got bored after that as I am doing it alone in the house so was wondering why don't we set mini tasks? Something to work towards? Like, I don't know the hula hoops try to get to 200 (I am on 193 the normal one and 67 on the super hula hoop)

any takers? Going back on at 2 so will report back or maybe the step aerobics got 227 on normal and a lot less than that on super step....

yesterday unlocked challenge trainer, beat him on the jacknife but toaday he beat me, was gutted:rolleyes:

Did the HHE on the crosstrainer and felt brilliant afterwards. Haven't been able to get on to post though as DD has been watching BBC iplayer! Might try to do another later on!

Also I'm a STS this week but seeing as I put on two pounds over Christmas and then lost them again I'm fine with that!:D
    I would if I could but I can't so I won't!
