Let them strike, at least it will be one less day that I get a letterbox full of junk mail that Royal Mail post through my door everyday.

I doubt the strike will go ahead though as this would surely put a large dent in the Posties Xmas drinks funds, with all those cards with christmas money in!

Nasty, nasty comments, and completely unfair to the thousands of hard-working P.O. staff (and no, I'm not one of them!)I hope you feel good about yourself now.

Why is it unsafe to post cash or valuable items...............?

Why must we pay extra for Special Delivery...instead of normal post????

Because.......... and Royal Mail knows this IS true............some Postman Are Thieves!!

Why else is it unsafe to send cash through the post???? Only postal workers ever have access to our post, once it leaves our hands and enters the box!

its only happened once before and the 'customer' has now moved

Without his post i presume! :rotfl:
  • This thread is one pile of drivel. Sweeping generalisations are statements that emanate from the uneducated. The type of people who you can't get passed the most basic fundamentals in a conversation, the type that leave you either banging your head against a brick wall or just saying 'o right, ok' forlornly in exasperation.

The fact is the Royal Mail is not profitable. An age old British institution which is struggling, remind you of anyone? Restructure and survive or soldier on into oblivion. Streamlining and rationalising a business is never popular but it has to be done.

Yet still you can post 5.30pm on a friday 1st class and it will be delivered on Saturday, still you send and expect a loss rate of only 1 in 1000, still you can claim hassle free and still can expect a much better service than many other postal services offer around the world, UPSP for one. Yet still they are absolutely rubbish.

Some postman are, yes. But its no worse than any other company

In fact most of the thieving probably takes place by customers that nick the mail while postman is at the door and I known many postman this has happened to, it goes one quiet a lot. Then there mail stolen by tenants of places of multiple accommodation

Most postman are honest hard workers. I was one myself, I often handed in money to RM because customers were stupid enough to put money in envelopes and the envelope was opened and had to get it resealed. It isn't just because some postman are thieves, but because the machines that handle mail cant deal with mail that way and they can rip envelopes open

You Wouldn't believe at this time of year the amount of numpties that write MR & MRS Smith, no address, town, no postcode

For all those that have "quoted" my comments, I stand by them entirely, and no they are not nasty at all.

If anybody here hasn't had mail that has been opened, damaged, lost or stolen, I will be extremely surprised. Also if everybody has suddenly forgotten about the times this has happened, just put a search in google for "thefts by postmen" or something similar and see how many stories come up.

I do not feel sorry for the postmen at all. They are doing one of the simplest jobs available and then they have the cheek to complain and strike to try to get paid even more than they already do. I believe they are getting paid a good enough wage for the work they do. It is an unskilled job, no qualifications or anything required.

"Custardy" if you have a problem with my post too, I would not have a problem in calling a postman a thief, if I knew that a specific postman had stolen something. Unfortunately this is a very hard thing to prove, as postmen know, that is why even Royal Mail have to spend time and money sending marked cards and parcels to try and catch the theives out all the time. If those Postmen didn't steal, Royal Mail could save the money they spend on the crime prevention / detection and pay the honest postmen more?

Also your comments about the "customer" moving having called you a thief, is that some kind of moral victory for the postmen or some remark that you won a personal vendetta and the "customer" moved because he was so upset after having called his postman a thief, and then having to suffer the consequences of getting his letters delivered late, or damaged.
  • My postie is brilliant, and so is the man who has the van that brings parcels.

I am particularly dependent on the post as I find it hard to get out of the house, but I do not begrudge the postmen a day's strike. The right to strike is quite closely bound up with things like decent wages, safe working conditions, sick pay...

Also, I do not begrudge a day's delay in parcels and letters because of the strike. I think that the pay and conditions for postmen should be fair, and that they should be able to have a living wage.

    So there!

Edited to add - nothing sent to me in the post has been stolen. Of damaged, one item incorrectly wrapped on one item where the postie tried to squash it through the letter box and squashed the box. Damaged - odds and ends but the only time something where the contents of the parcel were damaged, which made me chuckle, was a free energy light saving bulb which a temp postie had managed to fit through my letter box!

wasnt going to bother but i have to reply here
why are you talking about pay? where in the article does it mention pay?
FYI ive never had anything damaged in the post
while ebaying full time (ive not worked for RM for long) i had one item supposedly go missing which i refunded the customer for
it was then returned to me as the customer had put their address down wrongly
as for the customer moving,i had a 'chat' with them regarding why they felt it was acceptable to call me a theif
some people think a uniform means they can say things to people they would never have the gumption to say with others

Don't blame the Posties - it's not their fault. It's clearly the work of dangerous and spiteful unions.

As a postie I feel rather insulted to be classed as a thief because of a few bad apples amongst the cart.

Yes it is an unskilled job, but it's an ideal job for many working mum's because the hours suit school times :D To call it a simple job is rather demeaning to all posties who walk 8 miles a day in all weather to deliver your mail. YES mail gets damaged, I mean, if a letter gets wet on a rainy day, obviously the envelope can get a little torn or completely open, how would u like us to keep the mail dry in this weather?

You ask why you should use special delivery for valuable items??? DON'T if u don't want it insured, using special delivery is paying for the insurance on these items, do u really expect to have your item insured for the price of a 1st or 2nd class stamp??

AFAIK the checks that Royal Mail does on it's employees before they are employed are the same as they do for people who work in banks etc. After all they can't always tell who's going to turn rotten b4 they turn.

I've worked for Royal Mail since just after the last strike, that was more to do with the pension than to do with pay, just as this one is nothing to do with pay. I am happy with the pay i get for the job that i do (although more would be nicer :))
