Had my midwife booking in appointment this morning. I found out they do a "dating scan" at 12 wks here, but not the nuchal translucency measurements. If I want that, we have to pay £180 to have it done! They do 2 blood tests (at 12 and 16 wks) to check for Downs syndrome. I will definitely have the blood tests, then we'll go from there depending on the results. It was kinda of odd - the midwife was talking about amnio if the results showed high risk, but I told her we had already ydiscussed it and weren't going to have an amnio regardless, as it wouldn't change whether or not we wanted the baby. So she then asked why I wanted the blood tests then.
She seemed a little puzzled when I explained that we wanted to know where we sat for risk - so if it was high risk, we could be more prepared, just in case. We thought it made sense - but I could tell she thought we were a bit silly about that. Doesn't anyone else feel that way - that they just like to know the possibilities so they can prepare?
Hi Triggles
I'm in Gloucester, like you (Quedgeley, to be more exact) - and yes, the 12 week scan just for dating is what they do - with £180 for nuchal test with bloods involved. That's changed since 3 years ago when I had my last one, then they did the dating scan and it was about £110 for a nuchal - but that was just the nuchal measurement, which isn't as accurate.
I'm 38 and chose to have a nuchal - but paid £196 for it in Bristol. My result was 1:47 (ie somewhat high) - I could tell the nucahal gap was large when the consultant was measuring it, but was still extremely shocked by the end result - I also had high hormone levels to 'help' the result get to that level.
My previous nuchal done at the same time in the pg was half the size measured and gave me a risk equivalent to a 15 year old's (just age related) - so was VERY low!
I chose to have a CVS at Glos hospital. I couldn't wait for the amnio, even though it had a lower m/c rate. I knew that if the result was positive then I would have had a termination - and DH was fully in agreement. AT both nearly 40 with 3 other children we felt that it wouldn't be fair to them. I couldn't wait another 3 weeks for the amnio as by that time I'd likely to have been showing (so more people would know about the pg) and also may well have felt it move. I would only have been getting the result this week, in all likelihood - whereas I've had a month of knowing the baby is chromosonally ok. With an amnio and a positive result I'd have been having a termination end of this week or into next week - too close to Xmas.
I had a nuchal because I wanted to know my risk. As a high risk I then had a CVS because I needed to know for definite. Tbh, if I wasn't bothered about the outcome I wouldn't have the tests - but I was bothered, so chose to. A personal matter - some people on here choose not to, some choose to
Oh, this is far more waffly than I meant it to be. I apologise - very muddled thinking today! (Haven't read thread for a few days and am lost now!)
Tarajayne - the fact that the test has come out better than your age related risk is a good thing - and 1/700+ is a low result :T
Right - shall shut up nw before I make even less sense!! (is that possible?):rotfl:

Thank-you, you seem to know quite a bit. When I googled it it was either what I already knew or random sites for doctors which were way beyond me. We can't have the blood tests here, I had to go 36 miles on country roads for my scan. Everything seems a little behind when I listen to others talking from the bigger cities.Too many children, too little time!!!0

Just been lying on the sofa resting my back (when did shopping become so heavy?) and I felt the weirdest sensation. I think the baby might just have moved round. It felt like he was doing something - it was much different to the kicking I've felt for a while now. Perhaps he has decided that it was time for a change! It was a very weird rolly, pully sensation. Very odd and hard to describe.
About tests - I really don't think its fair that not everyone gets them. Surely a fairer way would be for all high risk ladies to have the test? The test everyone here - bloods and nuchal fold. I had the tests, but wouldn't have had the amnio or CVS whatever, I just wanted to be prepared.Stay-at-home, attached Mummy to a 23lb 10oz, 11 month old baby boy.0 -
feelinggood, sounds like bubba just turned right round, used to make me feel a bit sick.

NICE antenatal guidelines say that nuchal tests should be available - which they are here, you just have to pay! I agree that higher risk people should have free access to them (ie: over 35/ family history/ previous pgs with issues). I seem to remember when I joined the thread someone saying they could have one at the ripe old age of early 20 something. Doesn't make sense - but is just part of the NHS postcode lottery, I suppose
Personally I'd like to labour in the midwife birth unit (nect door basically to consultatnt unit) - but having had a c/s 11 years ago I can't - even though I've had 2 'normal' deliveries since:mad: . Nothing worse than being led on a bed strapped to a monitor for hours
Personal bug-bear moan over with now!
