does anyone know what a normal haemoglobin level is??? just had a letter to say mine is 9L and i need to get iron tablets? cant stand iron tablets so any other options gratefully taken on board!

not sure about the number but I ate lots from this list : http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/healthydiet/nutritionessentials/vitaminsandminerals/iron/
I could tell I was anemic a while back but refused blood test (I'm so awkward!)
but after eating red meat 3 times a week served with a good serving of steamed greens and some green salad with lunch I was back to full strength :D
Its more serious towards the end I'm led to believe, but if u don't mind paying spatone is supposed to have less of the side affects of the tablets.
As ur in scotland do you have a local butcher that sells game/venison? wild game is very good for boosting iron levels!

edit: just had a look round and can't get a deffo answer but I think ur iron level should be somewhere closer to 20

ah ha!! "The normal amount - or concentration - of haemoglobin for adults is at least 13g/dl for men (13 grams of haemoglobin per decilitre of blood - a decilitre is 100ml) and 11.5g/dl for women. If your haemoglobin levels are lower than this, you have anaemia."
    from here: http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/anaemia_iron.html

and don't forget "t's a good idea to eat foods containing vitamin C at the same time as eating sources of iron because this helps with iron absorption. Good sources of vitamin C include peppers, fruit juice, sweet potatoes, oranges and kiwi fruit." from same page

LOL! I use persil small and mighty... But only because I love the smell... and I never use fabric softener... (And about 3 months ago I noticed a blip on the online shopping and the huge bottles were only £4... Bought 2, still using the first and they've gone up to £6something... Wish I'd bought a few more at that price!)

Mine were 13 when I had them done and the midwife was "very impressed" - lol. I'm eating lots of eggs (hard boiled of course) which are supposed to be good for increasing your iron levels as well as spinach and broccoli. But I'm also taking a pregnancy supplement as well...

I still feel shattered though  (think I'm just doing too much!)

Hope you start to feel better soon.
  • Caz - when mine were low the MW said under 10.5 was slapped wrists time ;):D

I use spatone (2 sachets per day, taken in juice) because you have a chance of still being about to go to the loo on it!! BUT - when you get iron tablets for free from the docs I am not sure it is very MSE :o

Boots did have it on 3 for 2 but not sure if that is still on - it's in a big orange box.
