MONEY MORAL DILEMMA: Should the twins get the same value presents?

  • I have two sets of twins and I think it is important to treat them as individuals but also equally, if you ask them what they want and they ask for disproportionately priced presents and you can afford the higher amount for each then I would sit them down and explain that Twin 1 will have the higher price present they have asked for but will only receive 1 present and twin 2 can either choose something else to top up or I will top it up for them so that the same amount is spent on each. Children have a strong sense of what is fair IMO.

In these situations, I always find I ask myself, "What would Santa do?"
  • Im a twin myself and although we are twins we are still separate people. I think its silly to start spending money on things that they may not even use just so its 'Fair'. Kids arnt interested in the cost of something, they are far more interested in what they can get out of it 'ie fun'.

Interesting that this is a money saving site, and some people seem to think it is normal to spend £100's on kids presents. Tell them both you were going to spend £40 on them but they can add to it from their savings if they want something bigger.

Kids need to learn the value of money and understand their parents work hard to provide for them, unless you are on benefits of course which means the rest of us work hard to provide for them!!

The very best is sometimes what nature gives us for free.

  • As a identical twin we always got the same amount of money spent on us.So when I got a drum kit my sister got more things than me, Thats only fair, It was always the same at Christmas or birthday. When it came to splitting cake etc one cut the other get to choose what bit they want so you quickly learn to cut it in equal bits.

Well with my own children I have always made their gifts about the same value - so would say to do the same with the twins.

    Seems the majority agree.
  • Thinking about my childhood, I'm not sure I really thought about the costs but kids seem to be much more "price aware" these days (or maybe I was just oblivious). I do remember that my parents were careful to make sure that we percieved our presents to have the same worth though - for example if one got an expensive present, such as a bike etc, then the other would get lots of smaller presents and it was explained to us in that way, not in terms of money.

Having said that, we did not decide what we wanted from Father Christmas - we did give a list and would sometimes get items from the list and sometimes completely different items that Mum and Dad had thought of. I do know that I never had a christmas where I was disappointed and I'm pretty sure my sister was the same and I do know that the christmas present I look back on most fondly is the farm that my Dad built and populated with plastic cows and sheep when I was 3 or 4...
  • I've got 15 twin boys and there is no way on this earth that I'd get away with not spending the same on each of them!! Savvy is not the word when it comes to how much items cost, so safe to say, they'll each have the same spent on them. Having said that we, or rather I, have put a limit of £15 per head spending this Christmas, as eldest son has a mortgage and our bills have gone up. If they both want different things, then the difference is made up as a deposit into their savings account.
Just a Mum trying to do her best :)
