  • Managing to do ok today... no biccys at all!!! Though i have just had half the little ones potato cake, though suppose if I say that was breakfast not too bad!

I've only got biccy addicted since I started making my own... maybe if I bake less I'd drop some weight but its a great mummy activity!!!

Not sure about dinner tonight, have quorn fake chicken, some veggys and loads of pots normal spices and stuff but not so sure what to make though!... have to get thinking!

Has gone to play on her own little world for a bit..... but its ok the voices in her head came too so she's not alone ;)
  • Hi ladies and gents,

Well, I'm getting the hang of meal planning and cutting costs. My next step, however, is to lose weight. And a lot of it!!

I'm struggling though. All of the yummy OS meals I've been cooking are chock full of nice cheap carbs! Everything is padded out nicely with lots of potatoes or rice or pasta...none of which are good if you're trying to lose weight!

I don't [STRIKE]have time to[/STRIKE] snack, and I tend to have either sarnies or leftovers for lunch...so making my big evening meal lower cal/fat is the only way to go.

DH (luckily) will eat pretty much what is put in front of him as long as there's plenty of it! We eat pretty much anything except mushrooms (me) and peppers (dh), and I do enjoy cooking. Time isn't something I have much of at the minute (DD is 10 weeks old) so either quick, or "bung it all in a big pot and leave it" recipes are best!

Has anyone got any suggestions of filling, healthy, OS meals???

    Thanks
    ~Helen~

Have you tried eating smaller portions?

I have used weight watchers principals for years which are you can have what you want but in modoration.

There is nothing wrong with bread, pasta, rice and potatoes it's sometimes what you put on them which makes them fattening, like butter (yummy)

Have you tried eating off a smaller plate? I sometimes do this to give the look of a full plate of food when actually eating less of my fave foods.

Good luck, you can do it, it will just take a bit if tweaking.

Do you eat the same portion size as your OH? If so then this might be where you are going wrong.
  • If you use oil for cooking you can seriously cut down on calories/fat by using the spray oils instead. They're also more economical as they seem to last forever so keeping with the moneysaving ethos.

I second the idea of smaller portions. But before your meal have a a big bowl of thick homemade veg soup, or salad in the summer. I find that really fillls me up and is very low in calories. I used to do it and i must get back into doing that. You don't need to use much oil - some people use the sprays. I don't add milk or cream - I just pureed the soup at the end and it always turned out nice and thick. Since you're pushed for time, I'd make a big batch and portion it up for the fridge and freezer.

    Good luck!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

    I went to weightwatchers twice.
    I learned -
    1. You don't need butter in your sandwiches.
    2. Walking 20 minutes every day works.
    3. If it's got more than 5% fat don't eat it.

Within two weeks I'd lost over 5lbs, and I only wanted to lose half a stone!

Now I am sure there is a whole lot more to it than that, but a combination of stress and walking for my stress relief managed to relieve me of more weight than I had aimed for.
Nairns oatcakes are good as a low calorie filler.
Veg soup is cheap and cheerful to make - I just chop up carrots, onions, parsnips, turnips, tomato and anything else around. You can put in a cheap tin of tomatoes, or a stock cube, boil it all up. Take out half and food process/mash it and then return it to the pan. It freezes too.
Increase your portions of seasonal cheap veg. Perhaps make over half the plate veg, less than 1/4 protein (meat ) and less than 1/4 carbohydrates (potatoes, chips)...
When my mumhad me she walked off the baby-fat by sticking me in the pram and walking two miles up and down hills every day, come rain or shine. I appreciate that walking will take time which you are short of...

I do Slimming World diet (well i've fallen off wagon slightly but still base my meals around it) and I find their green days fit in really well with OS. On green days you can have unlimited pasta, potatoes, rice, quorn mince, quorn sausages, fruit, veg, eggs etc.

I love carbs so find it works really well for me. I have no idea how it works but it does! There is a OS and Slimming World thread on here somewhere. I'm at work so haven't got time to find link but I'll post it later unless someone beats me to it!

    Good luck

We have a thread of losing weight recipes here ;)

We also have a thriving Weight loss thread, so I'll merge this thread to that - you'll be made very welcome :T

  • Hopefully this isn't off-topic: it does concern weight loss AND money-saving!

We're currently doing well with our own calorie-controlled diet but, but. . . would really like to take more exercise.

Weekend walks are fine (when we can get away) but it'd be good -- re-phrase: but it seems it would be good -- to have some form of exercise equipment at home.

Trouble is, we can't tell a Cross Trainer from a Cross bow. As for 'elliptical', er, well, yes. . .

Question: do any weight-watchers on here have exercise equipment at home?

And if so, what would they recommend -- we're trying to lose weight, not lose money, but the latter is more than likely if we buy something electronically elliptically empirically ergonomically cross-bred cross-trained in our present state of ignorance. . .

Hi all, welcome to all new posters.

Food yesterday wasn't quite to plan - didn't have my soup so bought a wrap and drink from Sainsbugs. Then had a pain au chocolate in the evening :o

I did also do 2 miles walking to Sainsbugs - coming back was loaded down with rather too heavy shopping bags so that must count extra!!

Sneaky wii mid week weigh says I've lost 1lb, but Monday will be my official weigh day.

    Plan today is:
b: nuitrigrain bar and a nana
l: HM soup (from yesterday) and a roll
    d: fishcakes and rustic ovenchips.

Also planning a walk at lunchtime.

As for home fitness equipment - I did have a gym ball, not enough room in our flat though, OH had an abworker/sit up bench but that went fairly soon, and so just has a weights bench.

Other than that, I try and go for a brisk walk everytime I have a free lunch hour.

Just got wii fit though so plan to play on that more if I get a chance when someones not watching tv
