Hope you are ok Gunna.
Welcome to Sophie, hope you find this place as useful as me! It's nice and friendly here. It does sound a difficult environment to lose weight, I'd never manage it if there was junk food in the house - well done on addressing your health now rather than a few years down the line.
Had a great day yesterday but ended up pretty bad for food. Interview went really well and should start training in 2 weeks. Can't wait! And my course was really intersting, woke up my brain for a bit. Then went and had a few drinks, chinese and cake. I will try to be good today but still feel so ill so it is difficult to motivate myself.

Hi All, I am new to this thread and wanted some advice as I am a bit confused and in abit of a quandry. To explain, I went for a fitness assessment the other day in a gym and they told me my body fat % is 44%! My BMI is 28 so I knew i had a bit to lose but didn't realise that much! Absolutely horrified.
Background is I cycle to work so cycle 4 miles 4 times a week. I don't drive so cycle to get my shopping and cycle back with it on the bike. I am very busy person and always up to something, running around after people etc and consider myself quite active. I have recently gutted my whole house which inbvolves lots of cleaning tiles, lifting, throwing etc. I walk places too so I am far from idle lazy. I have fibromyalgia (chronic pain) so feel for my condition, i have a pretty good activity level - more so than most I would guess - I believe fitness is crucial. So, BMI says I am overweight, my body fat says I am obese !!! I am a size 14-16, curvy build.
Now, they checked my vo2 max which was 63 - much to the complete shock of the gym instructor. He said 40 would be the average persons . I can't explain it well, but it shows how well your heart and lungs work toegther as far as I understand. I thought ok, at least I am fit, but he couldn't even let me have that . he said it's not an indication of fitness, it could be hereditary. He said however it will enable me to uplift my fitness very quickly.
He was completely surprised I classed myself as "active". I have gone down from a busting size 16-18, to a 14-16 depending. I explained my body fat must have gone down as I am wearing smaller clothes. He said i could have toned up in my shoulders and legs, but put on weight in other areas - as he eyed up my stomach. He asked have i ever considered joining a gym as he looked me up and down.
Now, I am seriosuly considering it. As i cycle everywhere I would have to cycle from work to the gym, do a workout, then cycle home . It is very easy for me to overburn myself (and cause myself lots of pain), so I am stuck for what to do. I was a member of this gym when my symptoms really started so I am kind of scared and at a loss of what to do.
I have a pilates machine at home, and an urban bounder trampet thingy (mum loves qvc). I also have loads of yoga and pilates on vid. I just don't know if it is a good idea to join the gym under my circumstances or what to do for the best? I love the discipline of the classes, expecially body pump and pilates but can't do high impact like bodycombat etc. I'm not sure how understanding a trainer would be, or if the gym would veen take me on? I told him it was hard for me to join a gym as I had a medical condition. He asked what, I answered. Some tumbleweed went past . I'm quite used to that though as some people don't even believe it exists and think it is a phantom imagined illness!
Diet wise I am totally confused. I have followed SW in the past and had great success. I don't like to feel hard done by or calorie counting. I tried Paul McKenna but never really gave it a go. I am considering an OS diet but have no idea what this entails ? My brain is so fuddled by diets over the years, I am completely and utterly confused and don't even know where to start. For example i don't really have milk in my diet so is a daily lattee ok? But I do need milk so maybe i should just make myself drink it - i need all the help with strengthening bones etc. If i have 3 meals a day and snack on fruit is this ok? Am i allowed one treat a day? Is everything ok in moderation? And if so, how on earth do you measure moderation?!
Im so fuddled. I am also scared of joiing a gym because of contracts as I am at risk of being made redundant and could lsoe my job in September so can't afford monthly outgoing on a long term basis.
I tend to under eat rather than over, and think this may be a problem. It's a real bad habit but i could go without food for hours. I work from 1030 so take my lunch in and eat it in two bits. So to me that's breakfast and lunch in one go. I would be keen on having a smoothie for brekkie to incorporate fruit and milk but SW it was always bad, so again confusion sets in. I do like fruit once in the habit, but it takes me a while to get theer. Always have time for a banana too.
Sorry this is long, to clarify I am not looking medical advice or anything, just a bit of friendly advice on diet and exercise. From reading bits of this thread people follow different things so it isn't all OS.
Thanks in advance . Zip.A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Hi zippy and welcome.
The OS bit comes in where people cook from scratch and make their own meals (mostly). So whether they are following slimming world or weight watchers, over here it doesn't matter, it's more about not buying too many prepared meals.
For me, I get obsessed if I count things so I don't do points, syns, calories, etc.
I try and chose a low fat options and eat 3 meals a day with a couple of healthy snacks (although sometimes not quite so healthy).
I agree with everything in moderation, it should really be a way of eating healthily for life, otherwise when you get to goal weight you'll just put weight back on.
I started off with small things - dishing up dinner, and then putting some of it back again (as my servings are often too large). If hungry you can go back, but for me that wasn't often. Leftovers were then frozen or eaten for lunch.
Then I reduced the fat I used in cooking, often using a bit of stock/water instead. I cut out pastry foods and bought lean steak mince, half fat sausages etc.
Then I started trying to look at my 5 a day and increase my fruit and veg intake.
Then for me - I drive to work and sit at a desk all day so exercise is neededFor that, I don't join a gym as I don't want to give up my very few free evenings - so I now I try to walk in my lunch hour and at weekends. Just looking at your exercise list makes me feel tired! I'd take what they say with a pinch of salt - one gym told me I must be fit because of my blood pressure and resting heart rate - erm NO!!!
How about putting up on here what you would usually eat and then we'll maybe give some tips for you?
If you are overweight but pretty active, maybe it's your portion sizes that need looking at, rather than extra exercise? Or as you say, if you under eat, then perhaps your body goes into starvation mode, thus storing up any food you eat in case you don't eat again for a long while?working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0
