  • Phew!…I’ve been really busy this last two days. Not very Old Style all this rushing around like a demented hen. Had to get the normal paying work bits done and dusted before I could potter about with the fun bits in the garden.

The good quality, treated planks of wood arrived a couple of days ago for making the new raised vegetable beds and renovating the older patch – hooray. I’m making a total of three sections, each 6’6” long by 5’ wide with a two-foot wide path between them. All the measuring and sawing has now been done and will assemble the parts and put them in place tomorrow. I will get several bags of good Horse Muck next week.

Started a really nice chicken curry in the Slow Cooker earlier today – there’s enough for at least two meals though I know it will all be gone by late this evening – hee hee. I’m starving, ravenously, hungry right now but it will have to wait….now where’s that huge packet of nice Choccy Biccys…. :p

This evening will be a quiet one in eating some curry, watching the telly and removing lots of splinters….. :D

PS – The garlic cloves planted outside in a pot before Christmas have now sprouted through and are about 2” tall – hooray. Those wishing to grow their own, it’s still not too late to have a good crop by August. Plant your cloves before the end of February.

What a damp and dismal afternoon! just got back from church. Been meeting with the new Minister due to arrive in August. Took the kids to see Chronicles of Narnia this morning on complementary tickets as the theatre was evacuated last time we went. What a great film! Mrs MATH has come home and presented me with two beany hats she picked up in the clothes sale at Asda - yay! So all in all a good day. Just about to settle doen to pizza, oven chips, icecream and marshmellow and chocolate fondue while watching Soap singer thingy and come dancing on ice whatsit. Not Ol'Style but it is Saturday night!

I would be really intersted in doing this, can you give me some more information on what I need to do? I consume lots of garlic :)

I read this thread every day whilst getting ready for work, but haven't yet posted in it...maybe monday I will start to!

I'm watching that "Sound of the Musicals" and they're singing "One Day More" from Les Miserables. I love that song! Making me well up and the hairs on the back of my neck are standing up - fab, fab, fab.

  • Jumping onto the band wagon now :)

A good start to the day,

Bill from the water board came this morning - £56 in credit :D so happy that is going okay there, just need to sort out the arrears with the Gas/Electric -£90 after their messing around.

Must stick to the Food budget now as I need to cut down money spending wise to start this mortgage in April, as I am purchasing the other 50% of the house from the housing people so the repayment costs will go up from £200 to £450 a month, but I won't be paying the £150 or so on the rent so i would be shelling out a extra £100 per month. So good good at the moment. If I have the job offer from the school (just waiting now) I can cut out the car to travel to work so this will save me £100 - but it would offset the mortgage + rent difference :D - so all part of the plan, if no school job I still be looking for something local though.

I just don't know at the moment if 4.99% Fixed Rate is good at the moment, but the offer stands for the next 6 months with my bank, so if it goes down in BoE next month then I gain as they will revise the offer, but if it goes up this rate won't - so need abit more time to ponder over it all.

Went into town this morning to see if there is any part time saturday/evening work (none :( ) So will try again on Monday when Job centre is open and generally when its a bit less crowded in town so I can have a chance. So sticking to the budget of £20 per week so only spent £7.00 this morning for this weeks food as part of the meal plan and a lottery ticket for this evening. Tempting to keep the £13 away as a emergency if needed later in the week.

Anyways, 2x WM loads done, bed sorted, cats sleeping away - they will be sent out tonight as I cannot have another night of paws running round on the bed at 3am. Had dinner at 3pm so little peakish at the moment... thinking of a late tea tonight of soup and a good brew, plus sorting paperwork ready for the little bonfire in the metal bucket

Will be digging out some reicpes for cake making tomorrow so hopefully have a nice muffins or something in the afternoon - I will be making a loaf at the same time to use the oven temps to the max :)

GreenFingers - can you bod standard garlic from the shops as I did hear that are treated or somesorts or needs to be brought from somewhere like Wilkos?

Calley - My hubby plays Robin Hood too. Its the only thing we have found, that he is actually better at than me (LOL!) so I let him keep his little hobby.
I do make regular jokes about tights though.........

My dad keeps singing "Robin Hood, Robin Hood riding throught the Glen" or Ivan hoe when he sees my husband :rotfl:

I say nothing but it keeps him quiet for few hours a week and cost very little. And he is so happy as he bought his own bow off ebay before christmas.

He has only been at it for 9 months.

    Yours

    Calley

XLT Hunter - just a thought if you're looking for part time work. Do you have a cinema/leisure complex type place near you? Ours is always looking for staff.
  • I have a council run typre leisure centre - suppose I could give them a quick call.
  • Hello Fay and XltHunter,
Below is the contents of a post I made a while ago. It should answer your questions.....

"For those who want to grow garlic in flowerpots then now is a good time to plant your garlic cloves. Planting at this time of the year will provide you with some really plump, juicy, garlic bulbs for harvesting next July or August. We’ll talk about harvesting, drying and storing next year….

There are many named varieties of garlic cloves and seeds available from garden centres but I use a few cloves from the bulbs I buy from the supermarket. Break the bulb down into its individual cloves and select the largest and firmest cloves. Large cloves really do grow into large bulbs and a bumper crop. Don’t use cloves that are dry and shrivelled, as they will not grow.

I planted my cloves this morning… this is what I did…. I filled an 8” flowerpot with a good general purpose potting mix and planted three cloves in it, about 1” to 2” deep and a couple of inches or so apart. The cloves are planted with the ‘pointy’ end up, watered well and labelled. If you’re using a 6” pot then just plant one clove in it.

My pot is now in the greenhouse but the good thing about garlic plants is that they’re as tough as old boots, a bit like daffodil and tulip bulbs – nothing will show over the winter as the plants will be growing their roots but early next year green sprouts will show through. If you have no greenhouse, no problem, just pop the pot out near the back door or somewhere sheltered from the most severe of frosts. Easy peasy…..

The site below provides some interesting details, it also has some good garlic recipes and lots and lots of other useful information.

Hope this is of use...." :D
