Just checking in to say Happy New Year to everyone.

Back at work today and littlest-o back at nursery, (with pasta and hm tomato and veg sauce for lunch). Need to remember to settle fees later.

Tea towel situation has become critical, so must remember to get a load on at lunchtime. I'm afraid that that's about as exciting as it gets at the mo. Well, on reflection, not strictly true, got to hunt down a recipe for a chocolate cake for dds birthday in 3 weeks time. Any leads? And must motivate dh to get invite sorted, so I can e-mail/post them over the next day or so.

although we've got some rice which says it's long grain (asda smart price) but when you cook it it goes mushy and it's awful...... i shall go hunting for a "how to cook the perfect rice" message!!!
I know it's a bit late to be posting on this thread, but personally none of the "perfect rice" advice on here ever did me much good. Problem was 100% solved by starting to use Lidl parboiled rice (the one in the yellow packet, not the one with the US Flag design). Just follow the instructions on the packet (and don't stir too much) and it comes out fluffy, glistening and delicious!

  • Morning all. Feeling a bit blah this morning (self inflicted I'm afraid, was at a friend's 40th last night) but I'm on my own for the first time in about a month and it's bliss :j

Have managed one load of washing (sheets) so far and another one in the machine now, going for a shower in a minute and then hitting the sales in a very gentle way, just to get some (hopefullyl) cheaper fabric in John Lewis's clearance sale.

Had a bagel and coffee for breakfast, lunch will be soup and a sandwich, meatballs and rice for dinner. It's so nice to get back to 'normal'!

Have a good day, everyone. FF

Good morning guys – Newbie, so be gentle ;)

Back to work and I definitely feel as if the New Year has started now……what a shock getting up this morning.

Hardly slept, as I had so much rushing through my head last night. I have spent quite a bit of the holidays reading this site, posted a couple of times, and have a list of bits I want to sort today now that I can get to the banks, etc.

I spoke to my Mum, and she is happy for me to take her old freezer off her hands – thanks kiwichick for the advice (I plan to stock it full of bargains and HM meals), as our current one is so small.

Got to work early today, so popped to supermarket to get flour, etc for my now dusted off breadmaker. (BTW – Sainsbury’s have got an offer on a small recipe idea booklet for breadmakers – 45p, next to their flour at the moment). I hope to have a play tonight. :p

I managed to have breakfast today which is a first – so am very pleased that I didn’t spend any money in the petrol station today. Usually end up wasting money on junk as I got up too late to eat.

I also have a packed lunch with me too – very shocking, took peoples advice and made it last night. I am going to make a rice salad tonight (thanks for the idea) for lunch tomorrow for my other half and me. Now I just need to make excuses to friends at work, who want to go to the pub every lunchtime……any suggestions guys???

Urgh - that's a good start to the new year. Just almost finished typing a long post and accidentally clicked outside the typing area before pressing backspace - you guessed it, I lost the lot

Gist of it was as follows:

    1. Back at work today :( but boss not back until tomorrow :j

    2. Have head cold, stiff neck and a teeny tiny hangover.

    3. It's lovely to see so many newbies around this morning.

    4. Am wearing nice new Gabor boots - beautiful quality - reduced from £70 to £50 in the Clarks sale. Also bought another pair of nice boots in same sale for £20, and a lovely pair of court shoes from M&S for £19. All was in the budget. Could do with one more pair of good quality work shoes if I can find something that's good value for money - shoes are one of the few wardrobe items I always buy new, and I try to stick to the January/July sales wherever possible. Also need new all-purpose handbag (WHY are there so few bags available with straps the right length to hang over your shoulder and sit just under your arm ) as trusty 4 year old one is falling to bits.

    5. Got £100 from my dad for Christmas - he used to give me £50 plus £50 from my grannie, but since she died he's kept the amount up from both of them :D - which I will be spending on a digital camera, which should kick-start my Ebay selling among other things.

    6. Nice to see you back ancasta - was wondering where you'd got to! How is life in the frozen north? Was up in Durham last week and it was minus six...

    7. Must book dentist and optician appointments...

If there was anything else I needed to say I'll pop back later :D

1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
 Am I the only one whose kids don't go back to school til next Monday?OH off til next Mon too,so still in holiday mood chez thrift.

Thriftlings all busy doing experiments from cr*p science kits received as presents.Basically they are just boxes with a few plastic tubes and a magnifying glass.Every single experiment requires stuff from my kitchen cupboards.I've got a thing about wasting food, even in the name of education.DS1 wants flour to mix with water to make glue,I said we've already got glue and the flour is for baking.Next he wants bicarb and lemon juice to make a 'fizz',I won't let him have my last lemon though, mean old mother that I am.

May be later will let him help make vinegar cake, which is fantastic recipe for egg-free cake and involves mixing bicarb and vinegar to create raising agent, much more useful.

    OH also feeling grumpy about kids' Christmas presents,he's made a list of 'things not to get next year';

    Anything with multiple components
    Anything which requires batteries
    Anything which involves adult help/supervision
Any money(they always want to waste their money on complete rubbish and it leads to arguments and stress-although not for me as I let OH take them shopping ;) )
Anything living(ds2's sea monkeys have died)

So next year it's books for everyone :D

On a less grumpy note,I've got a day off cooking as we're going to my mum and dad's for lunch and there's leftover lamb pilaff for supper :j

:hello: Welcome to all the newbies today,You'll get addicted fast.
