Quote from Andura Guard for rendering/pointing

  • Hi Lingwood

    I interpreted the quote differently

    11 Durability
    11.1 Andura Tex-Gard Classic 21 correctly
applied at a rate of between 1.2 litres per m2
and 1.5 litres per m2 to strong, durable substrates
will perform satisfactorily in normal conditions, with
good colour stability, for more than 10 years.

I read that as meaning that provided the paint is applied to a sound surface it will last about 10 years- according to the BBA.

That compares less favourably to the bog standard Dulux Trade Weathershield Masonry paint

*In normal conditions two coats of Weathershield Smooth Masonry Paint, properly applied to the substrate in accordance
with the instructions, [14-16m² per litre] will perform satisfactorily for up to 15 years giving good colour stability (as per BBA certificate 97/3383
    Part 11).

So according to the BBA, Dulux will last 50% longer, and it costs much, much less to buy and apply.

Sorry, I am not trying to tell you what to use but there are lots of supposedly specialist coating firms out there who claim that their sprayed textured coating far outlast standard paints. Provided that surface is properly prepared they are telling porkies- I for one would not want to part my money with any firm that is telling me such blatant lies.

Personally I would always go for a decent plasterer (applying a slurry/stucco coat if I didn't want render etc) and decent paint, and save a bundle...

  • BTW glad to see that you have been researching the firm in question- it might be advisable to visit the companies house site to see which other (if any) names they have previously traded under.

    Good luck

Yep forums are good, thats why am checking things out before spending my money.

Hate to be doing this after I had spent it.

Never used the companies house before, a quick check of therir name brings up the following.

XXXXXXXX Systems ltd (disolved 2009) (Voluntary Creditors Liquidation)

XXXXXXXX Systems (UK) Limited Date of Incorporation: 25/05/2007

Both in the same city but different addresses.

ANd when you look at the Dulux info, that is far better.

I think I am now talking myself out of the hype, and will get some quotes from plasterer to fix the blown ares and then painter to re paint.

my neighbour used one of these firms , the stuff started peeling off after 5 years , he tried to claim on their 25yr guarantee , needless to say they had gone bust , or had started a new company .

Rapidly coming away from this stuff now (like it looks also like this stuff does from walls).

Not starting the extension until March/April 2012 (I like to plan ahead)

Just picked local architect and builder for planning process etc.

Physical works to start march/april with approx 3 months build time.

Will reconsider things then, with £1,500 as my limit for either system

    Thanks guys.
  • Whilst I don't doubt that there are reputable tradesmen using these finishes out there the whole industry seems so corrupt that I would question why anyone would want to work in such a tainted industry.

More often than not it seems to be used as (an expensive) quick fix.

The products, if used properly, do have their merits but they are seemingly intentionally oversold (and perhaps over priced)...

Now... finding a decent plasterer- that is another can of worms...

I have just looked at the ones on the Andura site and yes from a distance they do look good. Mind you it is difficult to find a site that would want to show shoddy examples of work...

UT most Bof them look like they have been re-rendered first anyway

It does worry me that so many people are offering 15 guarantees given that the Andura Tex-guard classic is rated at 10 years

    http://www.andura.com/PDF_Downloads/BBA%20Cert%20Classic%2021.pdf

They are all rendered first, it is a two coat system, a glass reinforced render is applied then a choice of finished coloured coat.

to render an average terraced house or a 3 bed semi should be in the region of 1500/2000 quid.
    plus painting. if required.
anyone charging way over this price should be treated with a huge amount of caution.

speak to the plasterer direct, not a marketing company. the marketing company will take a huge slice of commission.
the typical salesman will take 500/1000 quid per job.
    Get some gorm.

    Hi EWCS

Are you in a position to answer the following? I guessing you know more about this stuff than I do.

Andura say that they make the paints, they have the BBA certificates. I can't help wondering why there is an American firm called TEX-Cote (Textured Coatings of America Inc established 30 years before Andura) with identical products and identical product names.

    eg

    the xl70 primer http://amutka.pair.com/texcote/texcote.com/uploads/specifications/16/specs/D-TEXCOTEXL-70WTEXTUREDCOATING-CONCRETE.pdf

they even have a product called Tex-Gard, exactly the same Americanised spelling???

The American firm do seem to own the trade marks

    http://www.trademarkia.com/company-textured-coatings-of-america-inc-1213113-page-2-2

The more I look into these UK based firms the more that they seem to be stretching the truth.

Anyone remember N£V£RPA!NTAGA!N ? they also claim to make the paints....

They don`t make it no, and to be honest andura is my least favourite of these systems, i used it once only and it did not feel right, it was like dough even after putting a whisk through it, and was not easy to apply.
There are better systems out there and at a reasonable price, andura, wetherby stone, fenland coating etc have no morals when it comes to selling, i completed 2 properties for 1 of the large companies, the salesmen sold the systems for £19995 & £27000.
