I'm in Bristol & have had a guy from Apex Direct at my door a few days ago. He caught me off guard as I hadn't long woken up so I listened to his spiel & agreed to having the free survey done. I then forgot all about it until this evening when they called to agree a time for someone to come & do the survey. They said that both myself & my better half needed to be here at the time of the survery with us being co owners of the house. That sounded fair enough. They said that 6.30 would be a good time for them to call & it didn't occur to me until after that it would be dark at that time. I've always been wary of door to door callers but once I realised it was going to be dark at the time their surveyor is due to arrive the alarm bells really started to ring. Thinking of the Watchdog program on tv I did a quick search online & found this thread. Now the surveyor will have a wasted journey as he won't be getting in through the front door. I'm not frightened on telling anyone to f off when the need arises & that precisely what he'll get told to do if he doesn't go away after first being told to politely. Thanks everyone
You've saved me having to endure 2.5 - 3 hours of listening to him trying to sell me something I that I know I could get done, if needed, much much cheaper by friends & relatives in the painting & building trades.

I am in Crowthorne Berkshire. I didn't see a problem in having a free survey as we knew we had a few things that needed looking at. I spoke to the woman on the phone and was told the survey would take between half an hour to one hour.
Well guy was still here two and half hours later and we had to go out... we were suspicous when we asked if we could have a copy of his notes on which he'd written down the quotations for prices - he said no - it was a verbal survey only. We asked if we could ring him back later to let him know our decision - he would not give out a phone number! I also thought it odd that he gave out the DVD to watch but we had to use our own DVD player. You would have thought a good salesman would have a laptop with him to view it on.
Difference in price between us deciding there and then was £3,000! (One third of the price) - though originally he had quoted us a price of £22,000 for doing the whole house - which we weren't interested in as we don't want the house painted - just a bit of re-pointing doing really, and a few cracks repaired.
Anyhow we said no, we never decide this kind of thing involving so much money on the spot (reemmber we thought we were only having a quick survey done) and told us he should call us later for a final decision (practically we were walking out the door at this point). While we were out we googled and found this site. So we told him no of course. He wasn't pleased.0 -
one of my neighbour had this stuff applyed to the exterior of his house about 5 yrs ago , already it's flaking off and looks in a terrible state ,as it came with a guarantee he claimed and of course the company no longer exists , another neighbour had her property done 15 yrs ago and on one wall i would say that 50% of it has come off0

If they are not related then why does companies house show the two firms as having shared the same address in the past?

had another salesman call door to door using the same patter as apex direct, but claiming to be a different company but declined to identify the company, sent him away with a flea in his ear.

I have a serious problem with any so called 'specialist' knocking on your door and offering to send a 'surveyor' around to do a survey for free. My advice to anyone who is approached by such people is to simply say...NO! If you need a tradesman or any work doing on your home, then there are plenty of sources on the internet and ask around for a recommendation from neighbours, family and friends.
A couple of weeks ago the same thing happened to me, the soft talk patter, free survey, blah de blah blah. Little did the door to door rep know what my occupation is, and I wasnt in the mood to inform him of such. First question he asked was ...are you the home owner and do you live alone. That was the part that got my back up, because I thought what if I was in my 70's? Id be easy prey! I let him talk and talk and talk, the point is I actually did need some re-pointing doing to the rear of the house, so I booked the appointment. They rang and asked again if I lived alone, now Im getting the picture...single woman...doesnt know a thing about construction.
The two numptys arrived, for a little survey and chat, went outside shook their heads, made a few notes and came back in. Well the upshot was this they did a rough estimate of £8500.00, after rambling about subsidence and movement, and how I shouldnt leave it before it gets worse. It was about five minutes after one of them noticed a high viz jacket sticking out of my bag....are you a lolly pop lady? one of them asked. I put on my dumb dumb face, and said no why? well I see a high viz jacket there he laughed....Ohh yes Ive been to work today I said...ohh what do you do? they asked. Aww I just work in construction I said, they looked nervous at that point. Thats unusual they spluttered what do you do in construction...well Im the senior surveyor for XXXXXX it was at that point the blood drained from their faces. I then said, it must be pretty embrassing for you both, to now know that you have been sitting there talking utter twaddle, to someone who knows youve been talking rubbish, so I suggest you leave immediately.
They were out of my house quicker than a greyhound.
I hate to see decent hard working people being ripped off, show these charlatans the door folks!0 -

Having been driven made by the free survey for insulation, roofing and telephone/broadband salespeople. I now just tell them a little lie that " I am renting and the landlord is responsible for all bill and repairs". They soon leave as there is no business to be gained.0
