Can you apply for a debit card upgrade on Nationwide Online?

  • I just would like to share my experience.

I opened a cashcard account in June last year. Today, I went to the branch asking for an upgrade and got refused, even though I paid £1000 into my account every month.

The staff told me that it might not be due to my internal score, but my initial credit rating when I applied for the account. (I have a credit card with limit £2,100) Just like some of you here, the staff immediately offered to apply for a new account for me and promised to call me back later informing me about the decision.

You guess what? 5 minutes after I left the branch, I received a call telling me that I got accepted for a new Flexaccount with debit card and cheque book.

What a strange system. But I have to say that the branch (Islington) staff, who is a young lovely lady, has been very friendly and helpful in the whole process.

Nope I was just stating the obvious, the Nationwide have not taken any government funding, despite what Alice suggested, probably because they have been selective in choosing their customers, I don't think that makes them " idiots ".

Just came back to this to add that I left it for the time being, as had too much to do. Just as well as I didn't really need to listen to your bigoted comments about me being a supposedly unworthy customer which indeed were snide, on top of everything else I was going through through no fault of my own. I obviously made MY snide comments about N/W because I was upset and humiliated and came to this site for support. There are always those who will knock someone who is down, but hey that's life I can deal with it. have a nice day!!

Just opened a Halifax reward account, overdraft, debit card all given without asking. Nationwide are indeed, the idiots for being rude and intransigent to a worthwhile customer. :p.

But surely Halifax are the idiots, they needed bailing out / saving due to bad management, Nationwide, on the other hand did not.

I know which one I deem the " idiots ".

Any bank that drives away its customers who have done nothing wrong, but gave them an opportunity for further growth is not wise, whether bailed out or not. There is in my opinion a moral question here beyond everything else. In hindsight I made the mistake (like the rest of the country) in attributing a sense of fairness to banks. At least Halifax are using sound judgement and clearly discernment :D instead of prejudice in their current choice of customer.

They sent me a form after I turned 18 about upgrading, something like your new Visa debit card is waiting for you. Sign this form and we will send it out (think they had to do that cause it has a cheque guarantee on the back).

I've not heard of anyone else getting this form in the past, dunno why I got it.

I never got anything like that when I became 18. I enquired several times and was told I couldn't have one (in branch). Applied online for a new account and was immediately accepted.

I got one of them ... I'd had a Flexaccount with a cashcard for some time before I turned 18, then shortly after I turned 18 upgraded it to a debit card. Then, about 4 months later, they sent me the form asking if I wanted to upgrade to a debit card

Exactly the same as me, I had already got a visa card after going into branch
