I tried mixing in soda with the washing powder for the first time yesterday. It made a lovely job of DH's work jeans which were covered in oil, grease and general grime.

It made a really pants job of his mobile phone which he'd left in the pocket:mad: Perfect opportunity to change provider though!

I'm not getting any emails so lost this thread for a while, i live in a hard water area and the best thing I eve did was get a water softener as we were having to replace the shower every year and the washing machines etc too often. I use less soap powder, shampoo etc, i don't need to put salt in the dishwasher and a bag of salt, B+Q is the cheapest lasts for ages in the softener.

thing is we're hard water here so i always used the recommended amount.

The washing soda acts like a water softener, which is why you won't need to use as much laundry powder, even in a hard water area.

I mix soda cyrstals, tesco 50p value and a 'good' biological powder in equal quantities, can you swap the borax for the soda crystals as I have some festering away in a drawer!

I use half or less than the recommended amount without any problems. Although I sometimes add Ace to stains before I put the load on.

I agree that too much powder can leave residue on the clothes. So can packing the machine too full. If it's not getting a decent tumble round in the machine, the powder seems to get trapped in pockets and just spun round with the clothes.

  • I read about the water, vineager and EO mix but will that have any effect on skin at all??
gonig to give the mix powder a go, but not sure how it will react to my dd skin, she has been ok with Bolds 2 in 1 which is a bio so with luck the mix will be fine for her but jsut wondering about the extra nice smell using the water vinegar and EO how good is it really and as said does it affect skin at all???

Thanks! I never knew they were that good! I bought a tub of vanish for whites and thats good for the occasional pre-soak, so I bought the color version too, but now once thats gone soda crystals are my friend!

I thought it was just because they were cheap and made washing powder go further (I use liquid) and like white vinegar in the washing up liquid!
