Hi there, It's me that mentioneed mixing the two I think. I mix a good powder, with a value powder and washing soda, about 1/3 of each and then use less than half the recommended dosage. I mix it in an old washing powder box.

I use half a cup full of washing powder and half a cup of washing soda pour it into the powder drawer on the machine.... I bought a set of measuring cups and keep them for using with the laundry powder.......do not mix them just pour one on top of the other.
I have a box of surf from makro which I bought in August I have not used a quarter of it yet, ok there are only two of us and a box like this lasts for a year which works out at about £1 a month for washing, I do 2 - 3 loads a week whites, coloureds and sheets. do not use this mixture on delicates, use persil silk and wool for those, but usually only one wash every 3rd week, so it works out quite economical as well.

I use ecover liquid and use 2 heaped desertspoonfuls of soda with one capful of liquid. One in the dispenser with the other on top. The bottle is lasting me forever and has to be one of the best savings ever0

Thank you for this very useful post as cutting down on washing costs was next on my list. Could you please tell me do you still use conditioner? If not what do you replace it with?

Many people suggest using vinegar instead. About the same amount as you would use of conditioner.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I only add the soda crystals if it's a really dirty load, I find 2 tablespoons of powder works fine normally. I use white vinegar instead of fabric conditioner...don't worry your clothes won't smell of vinegar but will be just as soft, if not softer.
Be warned tho that the vinegar will degunge your machine after a few washes and you might get a bit of a smell in the drum so make sure you leave the door open to air then all will be fine again.
The only problem I have by not using fabric conditioner is the static.....but I'm finding ways around that too.
Dont forget you can use soda crystals to degunge pipes and drains and shove some in your dishwasher to give it a clean."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
sorry, I didn't explaine myself very well.
I use 3 measures of each, and mix together in a spare container.
I still use fabric softener, but again I use much less than the recommended dosage, as the washing soda acts a softener. I just use it for the smell factor.0
