    This is how I make mine anyway. 1 bar of laundry soap grated, 1/2 cup washing soda & 1/2 cup borax. Mix well together. Use 1 tablespoon for light load & 2 tablespoons for heavy. I use an old formula scoop and store in a small container. Yeah, the soap does turn powdery. I start off with the really fine grating but as my arm gets sorer I go for the bigger holes to speed it up. LOL. I don't dissolve in hot water & wash always in cold and it's always dissolved. Never been any *bits* on my washing. HTH

  • <If you go to boot sales, you can sometimes get those rotary graters for pennies- they usually come with two graters and a slicing tool - mine is a hideous orange colour, but the fine grater is fabulous for grating soap and really quick!>

    I think they were called Mouli graters if this helps.

  • We have one of those cheap graters with a plastuc tub attached underneath, and a bar of soap lives on top of that. Its the work of 5 seconds to grate enough for a wash but if I grate more it sits happily in the tub. I think we had a pack of two- one coarse one fine with tubs from Ikea for next to nothing. The coarse one lives in the fridge with grated cheese in it (much more economical than grating what you 'think' you will eat in one meal) and the fine one lives by the washing machine for soap. Sometimes I put the shavings straight into the drawer, sometimes I tip them into the laundry and stuff it all in together. Seems to work fine eaither way even if I don't always put washing soda in

    I think that's been asked before. Check in the mega index. Not much help from over here, but it's in all our supermarkets in the laundry aisle. Ha Ha.:p I think you can get it from Boots if I remember rightly.

    Boots sell it (plain white box, blue writing);
    Hardware stores sell it.
    Sometimes you can find it in the supermarket, but not often (amongst the cleaning powders near to Soda Crystals)

    It's just plain soap, no moistuisers or scents etc and might have added lye or something.

    You might like to try this recipe too which is well recommended...

    Do you have soap over there called Sunlight Soap? I'ts yellow. That's the stuff I mean. We also have a generic brand which is a lot cheaper - that's the one I use but it's the same type of soap. I just made a new batch tonight BTW. I grated while I was watching the telly. A lot better.
