  • What about small bottles of whiskey or brandy? You can get the minis at your local off license, or buy the gift sets from Tesco and break them up.

For the men who don't drink alcohol, you could get a mini gold torch for £land

apologies if it's already been said......another thing that could be used is flowerpots. either terracotta (for adults) or plastic ones & spraypaint them gold or wrap with gold paper/fabric :)

thanks for this!! ive just come across this thread and thought what a brilliant idea, we arent exchanging gifts this year except kids but i think it will be a really nice touch, i was googling what i could make the 'pots of gold' out of and seeing your post just clicked! i have loads of unused plastic flower pots in the garden and these can be spruced up being covered with some gold tissue paper! many thanks!:A

  • Hi
I absolutely love this idea! Will be making a few for family and friends! My brother however doesnt like chocolate!

So thumbs up to werthers originals, couple of pound coins & scratch card, but does anyone have any ideas what I could put in which doesnt contain chocolate? I wanted to keep things on the cheaper side, so wasnt necessarily going to put a gift type thing in, but couldnt think of any gold sweets or similar?
    Would appreciate any ideas!

Toffees - M&S have ones wrapped in gold paper.

Miniature whiskey or brandy. Local off license should sell them.

Haribo gold teddies - Aldi's have a pack of 4 mini boxes for 99p

I did them last year and put them in small kilner jars from Ikea and filled them with Asda smart price chocolate eclairs (gold wrappers), ferrero rocher, gold coins, plus a lindt reindeer. They went down a storm

Your pots look great jezebel1 :T I like the design on your tags, very end of the rainbow!

Today I bought gold coins and gold scratchcards, so that's everything and now it's just the filling and wrapping. Could try it this weekend, but I'm planning on putting the Christmas Tree up so... will see how enthusiastic I feel after that!

    Update:

So, I've wrapped my first pot:

    unwrapped.JPG

    wrapped.JPG

I now know it's going to take me a while to wrap 18... and I still need to print the poem for the tags.

Does anybody have any tips for cutting cellophane into squares quickly/semi-accurately?? My roll is 80cm long, but I want 50cm squares for the pots... First one was a bit of a faff, especially because once I rolled it out on the carpet, I couldn't see the edges of it! Oh, and I've also learned I had better put the hoover round before doing the rest :o

And, I've just worked out how much these cost.

    Coins £5.00
    Orange Chocs £3.50
    Teddy Bears £8.00
    Worther's £4.00
    Toffee's £1.20
    Scratchcards £18.00
    Mini Twix £2.79
    Glass Tumblers £15.30
    Decorative Balls £2.99
    Bows/Tinsel £2.00
    Cellophane £4.75
    Gold Card £2.00

I made 18 in total, so they work out at £3.86 each. I'm thrilled with that :xmassmile
