I rang tonight just after 6 and the offer's still on. I was told I would get £30 just before April, but it wasn't clear whether this was 1 of 2 payments or the only payment I would receive.

British Gas send a confirmation letter out, however, which should contain more details.
  • Thanks for the information. I just got my letter from BG confirming my £20 rebate for using BG electricity. I'll save you one of my Quality Street for next Christmas.
  • signed up for my gas rebate many thanks

    Thanks everyone

I have just got a £30 rebate for my parents (gas+elec) a few mins. ago, BG were very clear ,the first payment has been missed so the rebate is halved to £30.

It is very annoying though, since it is a strain for my parents to read to reference number of the bill let alone find the right phone number etc. the point I am making is that the most vunerable without others to help will receive no rebate.
  • I find it hard to believe that this is a Government incentive as in effect, it means that they are differentiating between qualifying customers of British Gas and people who use other companies! How could they justify this? The Government already pay some elderly extra money for their 'fuel', maybe this is what the BG guy is confusing this with??

I asked why BG had not informed me of this rebate, and he said that it was not a BG incentive........it came from the government, and any complaints about not being informed should be sent to the Benefits Depts which should have informed us, apparently!

I *shall* be writing to someone, whether I get the full amount or not, because the way this has been done has been awful. Without this site, I would never have known..................so THANKS again!!

From what I have read it has nothing do with a government funded scheme, its just that they have decided to pay a rebate to people on state benefits. Most likely to be just a marketing move to bring publicity and portray them as a caring company.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Thank you so much for this, I had no idea about it until receiving Matin's e-mail. I rang this morning - straight through no waiting!! I will qualify for £20 off the next gas bill, but am too late for the last one.

Just a quick update: as many of you've already noted, British Gas are still accepting applications for the time being, though they're only offering £30 now rather than £60.

Here's the official line from the BG press office: "We have now stopped marketing the winter rebate. However, if we receive further applications from customers then we will continue to process these and make payments. As the first part of the rebate has already been paid out, these customers will receive the second payment only - i.e. £20 for gas and £10 for electricity."

By the way this is definitely a British Gas, not government initiative. If you're interested here's its original spiel.

Amid concerns about the impact of rising energy costs, particularly on the fuel poor, British Gas is offering a winter rebate of up to £60 to a quarter of a million of its most vulnerable customers.

The payment should soften the impact of higher bills this winter for the average gas and electricity user, helping them to keep their homes warm in
what has been predicted to be one of the coldest periods. It's the biggest
single social initiative of any UK energy company.
  • I agree with you completely. I am on incapacity but get virtually no handouts. My parents are entitled to the British Gas rebate but because they are in their 80's my mum find their account number. I have all the other details for the gas firm but they won't accept my request!

    Christine  .

I get really annoyed with the exclusions regarding grants and rebates.

If you are on incapacity benefit, none of the above handouts apply, yet you are unable to have an income that comes anywhere near the thresholds applied to other benefit claimants. To rub in salt, many benefits on the list are given to those who already receive other benefits on the list too. Incapacity benefit excludes you from them all!

Fran and Jenny,am I missing something here, besides the trickle down money, or is there an injustice being perpetrated in the name of politics.
  • Hi
I`m very lucky, phone them up and they promised to take £30 of my gas and £10 of my next electricity bill. Im on Working Family Tax and Child Benefit. The rebate is still going.
    Thanks everyone
Wish this sort of website be in every country so all the people could take the benefit of it. Maybe we could create a global network??????????
