    Morning all, hope you're well.

Not been around for a while, busy busy. Missed the outcome of the daily thread discussion so apologies if I annoy anyone.

Spent last night carving my pumpkins to going to seperate out the seeds today. Keeping an eye on the thread someone else opened for ideas on how to turn the seeds into food. Alternatively we will dry them.

Quarter past midnight this morning, just before I staggered up to bed, I put some fruit to soak in tea. So this morning I'll be whipping up a Barm Brack, ready for dinner tomorrow evening. (Friends coming round for a belated Samhain meal, and I promised Barm Brack for dessert.)

To anyone who has made Barm Brack before - do you agree that its best eaten at least a day after making?

This afternoon I'm off into town to see if the market has any pumpkins reduced. We've decorated three, but I could do with some for souping. If I can't get any I'll go up tomorrow instead.

Other than that, just tidying up and getting some washing through. Exciting way to spend a day off work, but hey. I was going to be going to the dentists as well. Glad I moved the appointment!

Have a lovely Hallowe'en/ Samhain all.

we used to make them feel what was in a box and guess what it could be, slimy pumpkin seeds were one :D

OH and I not sure wether to go out for a meal or stay in and watch Spooks from earlier in the week, if we stay in I'll make a curry I think

DD cleared the spare room yesterday and made 3 piles, charity, bin or attic, I need to go through them to check, a couple of friends are staying tonight and helping her paint her bedroom tomorrow, she wants one wall turquoise and the others white with hot pink accessories :D

    Morning everyone
Snowy - I'm off to read yesterday's post to find the news about Dylan. I am sooo pleased for you.
Cold here so heating on for 2 hours. Dogs all snuggled in their beds.
Doing a mixture of house work and 'me' time today, so have washed dishes and now popped back on here to catch up with you all!
Need to tackle an enormous pile of ironing (I hate it) but might put on Little Dorrit this afternoon and that might ease the load. I've taped the first 2 (was surprised to see episode 2 was on last night) so will have a double whammy.
Also plan to look out a Christmas cake recipe and make a start on soaking the fruit in lovely alcohol. Last year I made a Caribbean one and had to soak the fruit for 3 months:eek:. My goodness it was delicious though. The recipe has been lost, alas, as someone at work took the communal cookbook and replaced it with a stained and horrible old one. Ah well. So....this year I'll either do the old Delia one which is lovely, or try something new. I love homemade cake but don't make cakes all that often - I would just eat them :rotfl:
Also need to get a new contract for DS phone so will look up relevant MSE before making the call.
Need to get a move on now with jobs.
Have a good day all and (((hugs))) to those under the weather

  • Good morning, everyone! DH and DS have gone out rabbit hunting :j and I'm about to take DD and her friends to the station to get a train shopping :T

I have a batch of brocolli and stilton soup, with HM rolls going for lunch. DH is taking us out for dinner tonight, to celebrate my birthday :D It was nearly 2 weeks ago, but the children have such busy social lives, it;s the first time we've all been free :p

Once I have the house to myself, I'm going to finish the ironing, run round with the vac, then indulge myself with knitting, tapestry, and a new book :D

Have a great day, everyone, Penny. x

    Morning all!

Don't forget to plug it in and switch it on will you Penny;) :D Or were you just planning on showing it the sights?:p My vacuum cleaner is very cosy in its cupboard, should I really disturb it? OK then, just for a short outing.

I'm about to go make some biscuits for my great nieces who will be up this afternoon. I'm making cutter ones so just a basic biscuit to be decorated with icing. Mostly dinosaur and other animal shapes. Haven't got any Halloween ones:confused: I'm dreading tonight, sometimes we get teenage boys round who have inflicted damage on the property, even AFTER being treated. I might just turn all the lights out about 9pm after the littlies have been through:rotfl:Either that or pray for torrential rain then.:D

Congrats for your anniversary bethebee  Enjoy your break:D

Hope everyone has a good day.

    CM x
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
  • Well done  I'll add this to the Old Style Daily thread, where we talk about the ups and downs of our Old Style days ;)

    Happy belated birthday!

Will I get as many answers here? I really need the advice :o
  • Morning all, have been very busy this morning, was in Asda at 7am for weekly shop as DH wanted a free morning to work on his new computer, had a lovely cooked breakfast too and all housework is done and WM on also. Good news, DH got back to work yesterday, the employers who sent him home on Monday, rang yesterday to say they wanted him back, so thats a relief. Had the first powercut here yesterday, one big shower of snow and that was it ,a mains cable went, so we ended up in the campervan cooking our lunch.
We are havng the lasagne i made yesterday for lunch and me and DD1 are out on the town tonight for the first of our Halloween parties. It will be really nice as the two of us dont get a lot of quality time to spend together.
Have a good Halloween all, however you decide to spend it, BSB xx
(((( Hugs )))) to all who need them
    Snowy, good news about Dylan

Bats Blood and slime soup = Tomato & Basil Soup
Severed fingers = cheese scone dough made into finger shapes with red pepper or tomato "fingernails"
Cobweb cakes = fairy cakes with icing webs on them; pipe a spiral on an iced fairy cake and drag a cocktail stick alternately from the edge to the middle and from the centre to the edge to give a cobweb effect.

    That is remarkably reassuring information!

Lalaladybird - my washing up liquid does last for a considerable time, usually over a month for a big bottle. Of course, I am naturally indolent when it comes to washing up but I do like to replenish the water often. I believe that the two things that allowed me to 'stretch' it is to use undiluted Fairy liquid, which is very good and to use it in a little handwash bottle that only delivers the very small amount you need to wash up with Fairy liquid. If you get Fairy liquid on offer it may be cost effective. I have never tried other concentrates :o Other tricks I consider useful are to scrape off as much grease as possible using newspaper (why else do they deliver free newspapers) and have the water as hot as you can bear. And I am only a complete amateur at old style, and I aspire rather than attain, so watch and I am sure you will find out much more. I cannot recommend enough the thread 'sneaky ways to save the pennies' which I intend to revisit.

I have ordered the dye for rugs and I am quite looking forward to it. Thank you all for the tips. I am also reassured that adding sugar and fresh ginger root to vodka will not make the bottle likely to explode - thank you for that advice, I am much relieved

Little bear is having a much needed nap. Since I have made a habit of putting all his hard toys like bricks and blocks in a large plastic box next to the playpen he has enjoyed a great deal of exercise. I find the box and toys in a different arrangement each time I pop in.

When he awakes we shall be going out, but perhaps just to the corner shop as we are planning a trip out tomorrow. I need to get in supplies for trick or treat. There are a multiplicity of children in the street who would regard anything home made as 'weird'. I am the only person in the street who seems to possess a cook book. I considered my garden a derelict wilderness until I compared it to my neighbours and I am definitely the only one who can be remotely considered old style - and I am aspirational!

However, it would be a shame if I did not give something nice for dear heart when he came home. I know gingerbread should be kept, but I am sure I can manage an easy gingerbread that will not poison us if we eat it tonight. I had completely forgotten Halloween. I suppose I should make the most of it before little bear gets completely enraptured. I am still living down the time dear heart drew a Seal of Solomon in front of the door in salt. We didn't get any trick or treaters that year but we did get some quite funny looks - which dear heart never noticed but I did. There is something inherently unfair in that.

I need to start, but not sure where. So I shall start with a nice big cup of milky tea.

Happy Halloween Everyone:j :j :j

Well I have the sweets at the ready and I may even make some goulish fairy cakes to give out (the beauty of being a really really bad cook is that I just make them as normal and they are guaranteed to come out looking goulish:D :D )

Sybil - I saw a thing on This morning yesterday where they rolled a piece of sliced bread with the crusts cut off with beetroot bits in the middle then cut off the end and the beetroot seeps through making very scary witch fingers :D:D

I love Halloween I confess :o I live in a close with 7 houses and 5 of them have littlies so they all troup round in their really cute costumes so I need plenty of stocks:rotfl: I will pick up a pumpkin later and I have a witches hat to wear:rotfl: (I will be really upset if they dont bother coming round:D )

Anyone at home today This morning are doing a feature on Pumpkin recipes which could come in useful (probably on the website too)

Snowy - I never imagined saying this but Congratulations on the long awaited Poo :j :j you must be soo proud

Churchmouse Just read yesterdays thread - bet you will be keeping that web cam on all day :T congratulations missus:T

right best get moving and to anyone thinking of cleaning - Pen Peng - DONT - your house is supposed to be full of spiders webs and dust today so relax and enjoy ;)
  • Morning all!

Don't forget to plug it in and switch it on will you Penny;) :D

Do you know, that's why I come to this board - to get the wisdom from [strike]older[/strike] more experinced Old Stylers :p:p:p:p I now know why my vac doesn't seem to work too well - I may try switching it on today :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: and I may try the trick of squirting polish into the air, so that DH thinks I've been hard at it (rather than reading and eating cake ;) ).

Edit - just read Nelski's post, and will be leaving well alone on the dusting front!!

    Penny. x
