Consumer rights give you the choice to change your mind within a minimum of seven days (cooldown) after making a purchase.
If you've bought those items then its on camera at the least even if you haven't paid by credit card, so it WILL be recorded that you did go through the checkout with a coat the same size, colour and make.
You are legally entitled to an exchange of goods pertaining to the same value or a replacement on the basis that the product is not good for the purpose it was bought for. IE: It will not keep you warm (because of the size, if its too small for example).
Returning because you dont like, or the colour is wrong won't do obviously - it needs to be a decent reason and tesco are well within their rights to say no if you give a silly explanation for return (which of course you wont).
Strikes me that they're being particularly 'funny' in your circumstances. In fact, I've never been into a supermarket which sells clothes to get an exchange (for the same product) to be told no. Are you sure that, that is all there is to it?
If all else fails, measure it and check it fits the stated measurements. If it doesn't, then you have grounds for not suitable for purpose bought.
If this doesn't work, get on the blower to the solicitor.
This is not correct. "Consumer rights" do not give a 7 day 'cool down' unless it is bought at distance - or certain credit based agreements.
If the coat is the wrong size, then it is not as described so could be returned on that basis.
Getting a solicitor involved for the exchange of a coat is a little over the top in my view.0 -

"Consumer rights give you the choice to change your mind within a minimum of seven days (cooldown) after making a purchase."
You are wrong.

You are wrong. An item is not unfit for purpose just because it doesn't fit.
Edit: Sorry - Took me a few mins to post because I'm at work!0 -
If every customer didn't bother to keep their receipt because they could demand someone check the cctv footage ,don't you think that would cause chaos0

The make it up as you go along act is being quoted again!0 -
I must say I'm a little surprised here. Most shops don't have any problem exchanging for another item in the store without a receipt. If you want cash back then you would need some sort of proof. Surely if you spend £200 in Tesco anyway then having to spend the money on something else in the store isn't going to cause you a problem? The fact you didn't try it on in the store or you have lost your receipt isn't Tesco's fault I'm afraidLook after the pennies and the £££s will look after themselves0

I think the Act is pretty clear - its been around in one form or another since 1893. I think it is the amount of barrack-room lawyers on here that cause the confusion.
It sounds like Distant selling & Sales of goods being mixed together to form a brand new law! (that you'll only ever find on forums like thsi! )0 -
Does the op mean they picked up the wrong size or that the coat was labelled incorrectly? If it is the former technically they dont have to exchange but most places do. If it is the latter than it should be ok to exchange or refund as it is not as decribed (sizing labels are incorrect) and this could quite easily be checked by comparing it with another coat with the same size label.0
