Glasses Buying Cost Cutting Plan Article Discussion Area

Hi
Sorry, no info on cheap glasses (I've been using all the good advice on here!), but I'm hoping some opticians may be lurking so that I can get a little query answered...
My eyes are pretty bad (-8.25 bordering on -8.50 in both eyes), and I really need glasses as a back up to my lenses.
I was wondering what the actual difference would be between 1.67 and 1.74 lenses on a prescription of that strength? If I got frames to fit say, 50mm x 25mm lenses, would I really be likely to notice any difference in thickness/weight? I would ask my optician but I can't help thinking he'll be a little biased, and I'd really like the opinion of someone who won't be taking my cash;)
I know it's a bit of a broad question as there are variables, but I'd really appreciate any thoughts on this as the cost is obviously pretty different for the two.
Thanks in advance:D

My daughter is a similar prescription - she choose some Karen Millen frames at D&A and they came back like Foxes glacier mints with 1.60 - the frame width makes a huge difference. If you can stay under 50mm you've more chance of a good finish with 1.67. My daughters frames (52mm) looked better with 1.67 but not fantastic.0 -

Thanks very much to everyone who's replied, you've been very helpful - I think I'll go for the 1.74 as it doesn't sound like it's worth scrimping (I know I just won't wear them if they're too thick).
ps. Bargainhunter - made me smile with your daughters glasses. My caring brother used to call me Hubble when I was little and had thick glasses:D At least I can use lenses for the most part now!Te audire no possum. Musa sapientum fixa est in aure.0 -
Hi guys
I'd like to get my hands on some prescription sunglasses but more like a designer style say for example Oakley or Bolle.
Can anyone recommend a site or two that offer nice wrap around style prescription sunglasses?
Cheers

I've just ordered 2 pairs of glasses from wantglasses.co.uk for £30 inc p+p. Very happy with the choice of frames and the price (much better than specsavers!). I'll report back when I receive them.0

Hi everyone,
Has anyone had any trouble getting their PD measurement? I called up Optical Express and Vision Express where I've had glasses made in the last 18 months and asked for the PD measurement for those glasses, and both places have refused to tell me!
Vision Express said that I would need to get an optician to ask for it (??) even though they had the measurement there in front of them, and Optical Express said that my PD measurement changes so it is "illegal" for them to give me the measurement as it might now be incorrect.
This just sounds like they're trying to get out of telling me it so I can't buy my glasses elsewhere!0 -
Spex4less.com have a ebook free that might be able to help re PD. But it is quite easy for someone else to measure it for you, quite a lot of the internet sellers have details on their sites re how to measure PD0

Happily, we are still able to run around in whatever footwear we fancy. Perhaps this might be different if the foot people also had a monopoly on selling the shoes!
I don't condone not giving out PDs as that's really an entitlement.
Nobody is saying that there should be a monopoly. Like everything else, market forces should dictate, in order to ensure competitive pricing etc. Online purchasing is fine for basic single vision prescriptions, if you're not too fussy about frame fit a quality. High index, bifocal and varifocal lenses are better done face to face for good reason - there's too much margin for error if not done so.
My advice still stands. You might well be pleased with your 1.74 index lenses and purely by chance, the optical centres may be fitted correctly. If they're not, then you've sold your eyes short, as if the centres were positioned properly, you'd see even better!Beware the character seeking personal gain masquerading as a moral crusader.
