So the ADSL modem listens for this high frequency signal, which tells it that it connected to an ADSL enabled line and can therefore initiate a connection?

I thought that there was nothing on the line and that it was the modem that initiates by sending a signal, requesting the exchange end to respond. No response would be forthcoming if it wasn't an ADSL enabled line. So I am wrong then? :embarasse

Yes you are wrong. We are talking about always on broadband not dial up, which does not use high frequencies anyway!

As to my Sky box issue - I have reconnected one of the boxes to my Virgin phone line. First of all I got a Not Connected problem as I had not reconnected the bell wire at the Virgin master socket. So realising that I apparently needed it I reattached it.

This makes absolutely no sense and simply proves that you don't know what you are doing because a Sky box only ever dials out and the bell wire is not needed.

If that's the case how come I had no problems yesterday when my line was activated but I did not get around to putting all the micro filters on today?

I don't see any point discussing any problems that you have until your wiring from your BT master to all extensions is 100% correct i.e 2 - 2 - 2 and 5 - 5 - 5 throughout. If you are incapable of doing this yourself, then get someone in who knows what they are doing!

Sorry my mistake - colour coding was wrong. Now corrected and Sky box can connect with Virgin line.

If you would bother to look back at my posts I have the wiring 100% correct with 2-2-2 and 5-5-5 throughout.

    Sky boxes will not connect.

    Did some further investigating.

Changing from my adsl nation expensive filter to the free filter provided by O2 allowed my HD box to connect to Cust. Services. Tried the same for the Sky+ box but it still won't stay connected.

I then initiated a callback from both boxes via the installer's menu - both completed their callback. As both boxes need to be able to do this to fulfill the multiroom contract, hopefully that's all that I need.

However I am still confused as to what the problem is.

EDIT : Just tried the box that would connect earlier on and it won't connect now so I'm pretty sure it isn't my wiring. Also had a look on Digital Spy and found this thread.

He isn't wrong you are. The equipment at the exchanges drops the ADSL signal if the users modem stops transmitting.

Try connecting using a dial-up modem on an ADSL line with no filter. When my line was first ADSL enabled at the exchange years ago, I knew exactly when it was jumpered to the DSLAM because I had an active dial-up connection which immediately dropped. My ADSL activation date was the following day but from that point I could not re-establish a dial-up connection unless an ADSL filter was used. At this point no ADSL modem/router had ever been connected to the line but when I did connect, the DSL lamp came on and it then synchronised. I could not connect to anything other than a BT test page until the following day, when my login details were added to the ISP's Radius authentication server. Although the lower sub-carrier frequencies are not used on a domestic line, the ADSL signal on the line prevented the dial-up modem synchronising unless a filter was used.

ADSL filters should be used for all devices connected to an ADSL enable line, including Sky boxes which use a dial-up modem.

ive taken the face plate off the wall, i have 3 wires, number 3 wire is blue and ive taken it off the face plate number 3 socket. i havent removed it completely ive left it attached to where it leads. where it leads looks a little fiddly as i cant see a slot. does it matter that ive left it connected or only half removed? do i need to completely remove wire 3?

espresso - despite what you say the fact remains that when there is no ADSL router/modem connected to the line there is no ADSL signal present.

It has to be done that way for the benefit of those who move into a premises which was previously ADSL enabled but who have no ADSL so have no filters and would probably suffer noise on their phone. The tie pair to the dslam isn't necessarily physically disconnected before the new user moves in (or indeed at all). You can test this yourself if you don't believe me - no router - no filter - no noise on the phone.

The only place you need to disconnect the ring wire is at the master socket end. It needs to be completely disconnected from the socket connector (only) either by lifting the wires out from the push in connector or by snipping them (care needed if you don't use side cutting pliers for this job).
