 Hi I have taken out the bell wire from the Telecom box , BUT, i have one of these lozenge type things by my frnt door where the wire comes into the house. It is marked "GPO" and has the serial no KKA16 inside. 2 grey wires come into it from outside, and 1 orange and 1 brown are connected to the oposite terminals. The green and Brown are NOT connected to anything, just rolled up loose in the box. Do i need to replace this with one of these RF3 ? and if so do you know where i can get one ? Thanks:confused:

Nope you do not need to replace it. Only lines that were suffering from radio interference would have had an rf2 fitted in the first place. from your description you do not have an rf2 so need not replace it with anything.

    Right I thought I would give this a go:D

Now I moved my master BT socket from my hallway and literally pulled the cable right back outside and up the side of the house to where it connects from the pole over the road. I tucked it under the eves of the house and dropped it straight into the front bedroom (office) and reconnected the master socket. I have a microfilter connecting to the home phone and the ADSL line to my router. In the master socket I have one extension which runs downstairs but is not used (as the second phone is wireless) I have removed the cable from slot 3 and had a 1/2 meg improvement. Is it worth disconecting the other wire to number 4? (whilst the extn is not in use) will I benefit!!

Also another question slightly off topic.
I only need a 1 foot Cat5 cable to connect my router but still use a 2 meter ADSL line from the microfilter to the router. Do they do these cables in 1 foot lengths anywhere as I can't find one and would it improve my D/L speeds?
I have just started yesterday on O2's premier connection and am getting around 8meg

    Thanks

The wire in number 4 is redundant. It serves no purpose. If you do not use the extension by all means remove the wiring from the nte completely. Sorry i cannot help you on cable lengths. But i would be amazed if a lead of say 2 metres would affect your broadband speed.

After reading some of these threads, there are a few people who are quoting BT as the baddies here, especially when it comes to charging you for repairing something you may have meddled with. At the end of the day all service providers will charge you and after all -why not, it's their equipment and you would not expect an electrician or plumber to come to you and fix things for nothing would you?

What is the current BT call out charge?

My Bell wire on connection 3 is coloured green - is this the wire I need to disconnect? Also is it just a case of pulling it straight out as it seems to be attached firmly. Please advise anyone with experience of this green wire thanks

Blue, Orange, Green, Brown. The colour really wont matter.

A sharp tug with a pair of long nose pliers will get it out.

But please whatever you do dont do something you cant rectify if it goes wrong.
To call out an Openreach technician will cost you a small fortune for 5mins work.
I think at the last count it's

    120+vat call out
    100+vat per hour + parts.

BUT if you cause a big enough stink for being charged these ludicrous rates and dont take NO for an answer.
    It will get quashed.
Just keep on saying you want to have a home visit from the manager in charge to justify what was done.
If you should be lucky enough to get a visit.
Dont agree with the charges and say you want his boss round etc etc etc.

I Promise you youll get the bill quashed as youll just be a pain in their backsides.

    I know from experience.

My line was so crackly and noisy Yet they kept telling me it was my fault.
They came round changed the wire to the pole (Their responsibility) and charged me.
    I was absolutely livid.
Just kept on with the "You cant get away with this attitude" and the manager of the guy who charged me just said I'll get rid of the charge BUT.... only after I asked for the manager above him.

Hello Everyone. Thanks for all the info so far.

I have a quick question, does the ADSLNation XTE-2005 also have a Bell Wire Filter, like the BT I-Plate? I was thinking of getting this instead as it looks to also contain an ADSL Microfilter and is as easy to fit.

It is as easy to fit, right?

I had a look the wiring behind my BT Connection (it's so old it has a T with a circle around it :D) and don't feel confident messing with the wires. I'm renting too.

    Thanks.
  • if you read the installation instructions you can see whether you have the correct faceplate for the xte.

Thanks. That's just a GIF picture .

Any idea if the ADSLNation XTE-2005 has a Bell Wire Filter too?
  • oops, that'll teach me to be lazy. google xte-2005, go to the adslnation site, click the installation instructions link. the faceplate is for the nte5 master socket, basically the BT socket is in 2 halves, split horizontally in the middle, if your "old" socket doesnt look like that, then the faceplate is no good to you.

Thanks. I'm confident it is compatible (my socket is in two halves) but want to know if the XTE-2005 has a Bell Wire filter or not?

The XTE-2005 has a Microfilter but I couldn't find out if it also has a Bell Wire filter, which the i-plate has an I understand what is needed. I was also wondering if it's as simple to fit as the IPlate. I'm guessing it is.
