    2. If your property has the right type of master socket that allows an I-Plate to be fitted, connect your modem router to the test socket and check for any improvements. If you get no improvement the I-Plate certainly won't help.

That's not entirely true, though. You'd need to leave your router plugged into the master socket for a few days for the exchange to register your your new connection speed.

Secondly, in response to all the "just cut the bell wire" posts:
Mr Average Joe isn't going to take wire cutters to his master socket!
One slip, and you are calling out the engineer... (sharp intake of breath.. "You did WHAT? - cut the wire?")
I think that would cost a bit more than the i-plate..

Anyway, these items are now available on ebay for around £11 including P&P.

    Try HERE for instance..

I went to disconnect my bell wire ..... it wasn't connected in the first place !!

I dont know if its ok to do this but....!

I had some telecom specialists come look at my wiring and I was Very Impressed.
BT quoted an arm and a leg £225 for 1hrs work...Get-lost.

Yell.com gave me plenty of other telephone engineers other than the dreaded Openreach non qualified ex shelf stackers in Essex.

They sorted out my wiring and increased my broadband speeds by 2.6Meg.

You obviously did not read post #1 of this thread did you! Removing the redundant bell wire is no more instant than fitting an I-Plate.

How quickly will I see a speed increase?

While you may notice an instant, slight speed boost, it'll actually take around a week to see the real results. This is because BT's system limits all connections automatically to what your modem tells it is the maximum attainable speed on the line, to improve connection quality.

While your router should notice an increase in the attainable speed, BT won't pick it up and extend your limit for a few days (when it notices the maximum attainable, or sync, speed is consistently higher than your current limit). So, if it doesn't work immediately don't be disheartened; it's not supposed to.

Again you don't seem to understand that any wiring connected to the lower half of the NTE5 faceplate is yours and nothing to do with BT.

Try HERE for instance.. (This is the same shop mentioned earlier, selling via eBay)

No sensible MSEer would buy one!

    OK...some questions...

I have a wireless router plugged into an extension off the master socket and a phone plugged in to the master socket itself.

If I plug the router into the master socket itself for a week or so, I should be able to tell if there's any benefit to iplate/no3 wire snipping, right?

I get around 1Mb on BT at the mo and according to broadbandchecker, that's about right...
"Your line should be capable of supporting download speeds up to 1Mb (around 20 times faster than dial-up)"

However, it also says this: "Unbundled broadband services up to 16Mb (around 320 times faster than dial-up) are available in your area" - what does that mean?

Finally, is there any need to actually cut the bell wire off, or can you just pull it out, wrap it in insulating tape etc?

removing it by pulling it out will have the same effect.

Only if you remove the lower face plate and use the test socket to isolate any extension wiring.

However, it also says this: "Unbundled broadband services up to 16Mb (around 320 times faster than dial-up) are available in your area" - what does that mean?

It means that you have the choice to use an ISP that has their own equipment in your exchange and get a faster broadband connection.

The poster above CCBG hysterically mentioned cutting the wire, when all that is needed is to carefully remove it.

I hope this link is allowed? It explains all about the bell wire and it's previous use plus how to isolate it without tears :)

OT, I know, but how do I find out which ISPs are in there?

This site here will list all the LLU operators on your exchange.
