  • Hello everyone,
have taken the cover off my bt master socket and i do not have any wires in the cover like the photo's on Kevanf1 link.
    So what can i do?
my exchange says 2.5 mbps we only get 512kps max
told sometime ago by bt engineer this is all we can get as we are along way from the exchange.
The exchange was updated in 2006 and is going to adls+2 in september/october
    any ideas that will help.

just looked at my bt master socket, and behind the face plate i only have 2 wires connected to A and B which are held down with copper screws..

i cannot see any other terminals and i have took it apart, and the only thing i have is A and B and the two wires connected to both A and B

    other wires are not connected..

i have not come across the same looking socket as mine, even though it is the correct socket

for example look at the picture below, this is not my socket but you can see the 3 screws, well mine has 2 screws labled A and B but i do not have the 1,2,3,4,5,6 connections?

    this is like mine

i take it i don't have any bell wire connected?
  • mine is the same as the person with just the A n B terminals,
    i only have 2 wires
i changed bt's box for a crome face plate that looks pretty

guys you have the newer versions of the nte5.. you wont have the idc connections 1 thru 6 instead your extension front plate will probably just have 2 thru 5. either way if you have no extension sockets you will have no extension wiring connected to the front plate. So no bell wire to disconnect and no need to buy any bell wire filter.

The bell wire 'trick' and the i plate only come into need if you have extensions.

again if you have no extension sockets probably not much other than await for you exchange to get upgraded.

I believe you can still book and pay bt to do you a broadband health check. This will get you a broadband trained engineer out who will attempt to increase your speed for you. With no guarantees.

No they don't as the new version has the 22mH choke built in and it is visible.

Wrong again! IDC connections marked in red below. Perhaps you should go here if you can't see the IDC connectors!

  • My Bell wire on connection 3 is coloured green - is this the wire I need to disconnect? Also is it just a case of pulling it straight out as it seems to be attached firmly. Please advise anyone with experience of this green wire thanks

The colour is irrelevant, just remove any wires other than those connected to 2 & 5.

wow i did not realise we were having a competition. ok

you wrote "No they don't as the new version has the 22mH choke built in and it is visible." maybe it does hence the reason why i stated NEWER version not newest!

You also said "Wrong again! IDC connections marked in red below. Perhaps you should go here if you can't see the IDC connectors!"
but as you can see if you re-read the original quote the guy said he did not have the nte in the first picture but more like the one in the second and not all the newer nte's have all 6 idc connectors.

Either way if you want to be considered the mecca of all knowledge just say and i wont bother stepping on your toes. :wall:

@ Secondpastthepost it does not really matter what colour the bell wire is it will always be the one terminated in number 3. some of the older bt wire and indeed the newer stuff is only 4wire using blue, orange, green and brown. So in answer to your question yep just remove it .
  • I opened my box and it didnt have any orange wire with white stripes to cut. all the other wires were connected already in a rubber caseing and were not in the unit where it is numbered one to six, they were all empty.

i cut the orange wire thinking it was te bell wire, put everything back and found the phone didn't work, luckly i was able to rewire the orange wire ( no white stripe) back.

so which one is the bell wire?

I bought a i-plate today, put it on, however the speed check that i did before and after showed no diffrence. and actually seems worse than before i put the i-plate, it was working up to 4mbs and now just reaches 2mbs.

was this a bad move? i havent took out the i-plate to see if this is the problem yet.

    can anyone help.
