Post Office abuse about prepay paypal postage

Hi, I know this is not a specific ebay problem but I think I will relate to alot of ebayers. I used to take all my ebay stuff to the post office and pay for the postage there, but I got sick to death with being overcharged, large letters being put through as parcels etc, plus all the sighing if I had more than a couple of items. So I started printing off the postage via paypal. Today I took 3 items in for proof of postage and got a whole load of abuse from the assistant saying that i was taking business from the post office and that it would be my fault if it closed etc etc, this went on for ages. I said i just assumed that royal mail would still pay them a handling fee but she said not.
Ive got about 30 items I will need to post next week but dont know what to do now. Has anyone else had this problem?

This is a localised problem, some PO's are very clued up and you never have a problem but others are just darn right rude! I tend only to use online postage for small items that I can put in the box and are not worth the hassle of claiming for.

She was right about you taking buisness away from the PO but wrong to tell you off.
  • Only use online postage if there's money to be made and we don't want to discloses the cost.

Thats my thoughts too.. as they say time is money. Why do I want to queue up for 25 to 30 minutes at the post office in my lunch time (seriously this is how long it takes quite often). Post offices need to get back to the basics of whatt they are there for - posting letters and parcels, not selling insyuarances, phone services and spending 15 minutes on a single passport application. Also I think a lot of the smaller Post Offices would get more business if they stayed open later so people can call in on their way from work to send post, collect mail that can't be delivered at home etc. If they opened at say 10.00 and hut at 18.30 I am sure trade would increase.

If you're finding the prepay easier, use that.

If she starts next time you go in, tell her you wouldn't have been 'forced to come to the difficult decision to use prepay postage' if the PO had been processing your post accurately.

Thanks for all your thoughts, I would be happy to pay for my postage at the counter if they didnt keep ripping me off. Plus i use the post office for many other things, it should be a bit give and take.

i think a lot of the PO's are really feeling the pressure
FYI they are pressurised into offering/selling all of the other services
yet again we get the same issue
whats good for one is no use to others

on the flip side, just look at todays news
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/south_of_scotland/7681573.stm
a further 24 closures,3 of which are covered by my delivery office

Dont get me wrong, I hate the idea of post offices having to close and support mine where possible. But its not on to have a go at your customers. When i got made redundant i had to keep smiling to the end, and i doubt my P/O would have given a damn if they knew. Also i dont think sneaking extra postage on your parcels would be classed as upselling.

Some post offices are lovely. But others...

It's not the long queues and waiting I mind (well, to be fair, I do mind, just not as much) but the rudeness (yep, had that).

And, apparently I am not alone in this, but lots (lots! all different ones!) of post office staff getting your postal charges just that bit wrong - and always that bit in favour of the post office! (the ones who ask me twice - once three times! - if I want first or second class get me, when i say second very clearly and THEN THEY PUT IT THROUGH AS FIRST and say, 'oh, yeah, sorry, well, it's only a bit, you don't mind do you?' have they got shares in the company or something? blimmin hell!)

if i go to online postage it'll be because of things like that.
