Quite a few members have suggested i put this on here as it could be useful.

I'm no expert but i have been able to grow enough veg to feed us more or less all year. I've saved thousands doing this although admit i'm lucky enough to have an allotment and people don't always have this option.

Anyway anyone who wants a copy of my planting plans i'm happy to email them if you pm me with your email address. The file is in excel theres a page for each month and it colour coded. Oct 08 - sep 09

Email received - many thanks I look forward to being a less chaotic gardener in future.:T

    Sweet potatoes,

As I'm not one for throwing money away i thought i would try growing the slips from a shop bought sweet potato. From what I understand when the slips (shoots are about 2 inches long you pull them off and plant them.

I will plant mine in either a grow bag or large bucket. They don't need earthing up.
    Kind Regards
    Maz

did you see the last episode of GW? RHS did a trial of 4 varieties... T65 gave the best yields from what I remember.. all other varieties didn't give such good yields.. Joe S had some of the trial varieties on his allotment.. he wasn't that impressed and felt you would get more from growing potatoes rather than sw.pots..

I would be very interested to hear how you get on if you try... my veg garden is too small for me to "lose the space" if yields are small... in fact I have decided not to grow potatoes (or just do a tub for christmas meal) as I find in pots I don't get the same yield as if they are grown in the ground - for me, it is a lot of compost and space for not a huge amount of produce..

That's just typical, i find GW isn't what it used to be and Jos S frustrating to watch as I kept laughing when he set up is allotment on his own if i'd had all that help it wouldn't have taken me three years more like 3 weeks. (of course he did)

Anyway back to topic, thanks Yategirl for the info i won't bother buing slips at £14 for 10 i'll try a tesco one, i think I could spare a little space for a trial run.

I understand your reasons for not growing Potatoes I've lost nearly a whole crop two years running thanks to blight so this year i'm not planning on growing maincrop. Earlies should be out the way before any blight hits.
    Kind Regards

Hi just to add mt 4 penneth in about sweet potatoes. We bought some slips from Thomson & Morgan a couple of years ago and grew them on the allotment. No cover or anything. We had two different varieties T65 was one but cannot recall the other. The yield was surprisingly poor which disappointed DH tremendously as he loves roasted sp's. We won't be trying them again in a hurry.

MUM OF 4 - I've pm'd u as I would love a copy of your planner....DH does all the work but he's not in the slightest planned at all.... lol this willhopefully be a good thing for him.

Buy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning

I did look on T&M website and thought i wasn't going to pay £14 for something that may not workout. I'm just going to try growing my own slips from a tesco finest, i've looked and once the origon was Ireland so the climateis similar, but i think i will try them in the poly tunnel

I'm on for sweet pots as well!
My next job is to sow some perpetual spinach and lettuce as it can be grown in this season.

Is there anything else anyone knows of that can be sown now?

PS I agree with GW. We've stopped watching it altogether
