Ah yes I was going to mention that. I was looking for S for sowing seeds lol and which month. Prehaps she in incorporate this on her plan upgrade ;-) Poor woman we are harrassing her!

I just love that it will help so many more families to grow their own. I've just been into Tesco and what a rip off. I wanted a cauli to add to veg curry and they were 79p:eek:
sorry forgot to say those seed packets from wilkinsons should be fine.Kind Regards

if you like I don't mind jotting down what to do throughout the year if you like, I don't think it would take long with a couple of meal ideas
Maz, that would be great. :A My attempt at growing my own wasn't very good this year, I must have gone wrong somewhere so any tips would be really appreciated as are recipes.
Be thankful I don't live closer... I'd be banging your door for help too! :eek:2025 DECLUTTERING CAMPAIGN MrsSD. Physical 92, Digital 203, 10 Used Up

cupid_s - When you get the plans you'll see that i grow melon in my poly but i will ask down the site for you as other people seem to grow them quite well outside under a bit of fleece. You'll need to sow the right type though.
I grew Minnesota midget from the real seed company and i was pleased with the results, they also have petit gris de rennes which they say can be grown outdoors but do point out you'll get more success when it's undercover.
edited to say - for those that do intend to grow to feed the family - don't bother with watermelons they would take forever to become ripe, waste of space and effort. Although if it's just a bit of fun then of course then try.Kind Regards

Got the plans today so thankyou maz :T
Just wondering has anyone tried the "3 sisters" method for sweetcorn/beans/squashes.
Read about it and like the idea. You grow sweetcorn in a block, the beans (or peas I suppose) grow up the actual corn stems, meanwhile you grow squashes across the ground. The beans are supported by the corn and the squashes help cover the ground and keep weeds down. When the beans finish you leave the roots in the ground to help feed the others.

tip for November
collect all fallen leaves to make a great leaf mould which when rotted down is a good organic soil improver and mulch which is free. It should end up looking dark brown and a bit crumbley in say 2 years. (this is called planning)
good fun to with the children in their wellies hats and gloves.
You can store the leaves in black bin liners or make a container from chicken wire in the shape of a waterbutt. It doesn't need to be covered up or anything like that.Kind Regards

It can be done with success but i don't think i'll do it again but if you notice i've put squashes and pumpkins at the top left of the plot the idea being these a few beans around that area and the compot bins etc so they can creep all around that stuff too.
i think squashes around either beans or sweetcorn works really well but i found picking the beans a pain when grown up the sweetcorn.Kind Regards

Thanks for that maz, good to hear how these things work in the flesh so to speak. May still try it as a space saver, but still have beans elsewhere in my plan.....
Have a small plastic greenhouse but seriously thinking of buying a "proper" one. Not got room for a polytunnel as well, especially as oh now talking about getting some chucks as well lol.

Just a thought perhaps only grown up the "outside" corn rather than the centre of the block if you see what mean?"Overthinking every little thing

right as this is turning to be bit of a friendly veg club doesn't anyone fancy joining me in attempting to grow sweet potatoes. Thought it would be worth looking into. I'll do some digging about but i think you have to put one into a jar of water to get some shoots.
They are really expensive to buy in the shops but great to cook with.
just found this - from RHS
'Plants are ordered as cuttings or slips, delivered from late April onwards. Pot the cuttings immediately on receipt into small individual pots of multipurpose compost. Should the slips be unrooted, simply cover the pots with a clear plastic bag or place in an unheated propagator until roots appear'
'Ideally, plant under a cloche or fleece tent. Alternatively, grow in a glasshouse in large tubs, growing-bags or the glasshouse border. Whitefly and red spider mite can cause problems on foliage under cover'Kind Regards
