My wheelchair and crutches arrived today :) I missed the first delivery this morning by half an hour (was still asleep) but the delivery person had another delivery in the area this afternoon so came back with them. Well done Parcelforce :)

Walking with a crutch is weird, but it does take the weight off my hip so if I'm having a bad hip day I'll still be able to go out. I've yet to see my partner trying to cart the wheelchair up and down the stairs, but I did get a lightweight one so he should be able to manage. I've nicknamed my chair "freedom" as it means I'll be able to go out even when tired :)

Hi Danni :) we seem to be close, north east england :) Just out of curiosity, where did you get the chair and crutches? And roughly how much did they cost? I've got some crutches but they were from a hospital and I was only supposed to have them until I got back on my feet (which was 2 years ago) but I still need them every now and then when I do too much so would like to get some of my own, plus the chair would come in handy as I can't enjoy days out (zoo, theme park) without being in major pain by mid morning which then spoils the rest of the day for everyone else as hubby has to hold me up while trying to walk.

I got them from http://www.betterlifehealthcare.com. The crutches were these ones for £15.99 a pair, and the wheelchair was this one for £139.99, plus £19.99 for the cushion. They have free delivery, but I paid £6.99 for next day (for the entire order).

There are cheaper chairs on there, but this one I got because it was self propelled (I don't like being out of control) and it's lightweight, so my partner can push it easily when we're out. It also wasn't over my budget of £200 in total (I've been saving :p).

I don't intend to use them all the time. The crutches are more for days where my hip is playing up, but otherwise I'm okay, and the wheelchair is for days when my general pain and tiredness means that moving is hard, and also for days out like museums and theme parks. I'll probably still go out locally without them, but it just means that all those visits I've not been able to do or events I've had to miss shouldn't be a problem any more :)

  • I'm all out of sorts since SS woman came on Monday to help me fill in DLA form and suggested I think about sheltered housing as I have so many falls with subsequent injuries.

    *squish*

I panicked when my old social worker was looking at care homes for me. I was 20. Luckily she found supported accommodation for me instead, so I was still able to retain most of my independence.

How do you feel about it? Is it a crazy idea and not suitable at all, or is there some merit to it? Thinking about it doesn't mean you have to do it if you don't want to.

  • Danni I can see how on paper you would look at all my info and think it would be sensible, but it doesn't feel like that in real life iyswim.

I understand. If it doesn't feel right, then you don't have to do it, and I doubt she'd want a decision today even if you did think it was a good idea.

There's other things you'd need to consider anyhow, such as community and social network and things. They're the sort of things that may not show up on paper.
