Forget my last post folks.Tried recording on the thing tonight for first real time i.e more than 30 mins. The thing locked up after 50 mins and now wont open the drawer to let me have my disc. Needless to say going back tomorrow !!! and think I'll pay a little more for something decent although my old goodmans was perfect in every way, good picture good sound etc but prone to overheating

An alternative (I can start a new thread if relevant)... I picked up the proline DVDR700 from comet last night for 79.99. I've not unpacked as its a birthday present, but *apparently*
    - It's a liteon LVW-1101 & a new model
    - it's small (think more set top box than full width VHS machine)
    - it has RGB input (need to verify)
    - it has a DV input for direct record from camcorder
    - It has a flexible recording mode (timer only) so it can record 2.5, 3 hours etc in optimum quality
    - The UI whilst basic is easy to use

    Disadvantages
    - basic editing only (use a PC?)
    - Mono terrestial tuner (but I have freeview and sky anyway)

DVD +R/RW only but that doesn't bother me.
My usage is archiving stuff from sky and digital camcorder so the tuner doesn't bother me. (just wondering if sky has lots of macrovision on their movies though...).

There's so much churn in this area ie dual layer, freeview, hard disk that it makes sense to be to minimize expense and accept it will be outdated in 1,2 years.

Same in my store too. Tried to get a refund of the difference as I only bought it a week ago but no go.

In the end I bought another at £68 and returned it later still sealed using my original receipt for £79.

Even at the origal £79 it's still an absolute bargain - I've been looking for a recorder with onboard 5.1 decoder and 6 phono outputs, which my old player had. There are not too many about, but this has them and has saved me the expense of buying a separate peice of kit. I got mine from Leicester Tesco Extra on Saturday, loads in stock if anyone's looking, still at £79 but who cares. Divx works a treat too.
  • Bought one for £68 in Tesco in Sale, they had 20+ of them on shelves My first ever recorder. Bought Tesco brand -R/RW disks, didn't realise till I got machine home that it was +R/RW recording so will have to buy some more. What brand of disks is everyone using? Are Tesco's own make of disks any good?
