You may not even need to finalize.

I placed un-finalized disks from the tescos dvd recorder just fine on
    a) My laptop with DVD rom drive
    b) My sony home cinema system

So what's the definitive answer to "Does it record from RGB in or is it just RGB passthrough ?"

    Cheers,
    Mike.

You need either DVD+R for write once stuff that you want to keep, or DVD+RW which are re-writable, for recording tat like soaps which you wiil watch & then wipe. (RWs are dearer than Rs)

I bought some +RWs from 7dayshop who are really good for loads of stuff.

    http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_4&products_id=28562

The recorder will PLAY DVD-Rs which have been recorded on another machine or PC, but it will not record on -Rs.

I have had no problems at all with my Technika, but I am aware from this column that others have! Fingers crossed!

    Hope this helps.

Agreed, I think it will PLAY almost any media but as bartman said, wil only record to +R or +RW.
  • well mine has also died.

noticed the tray behaving strangely for a day or two, and then it would always say "no disk" no matter what was inserted.

i wanted to exchange it but couldnt find any at a similar price that could be multi-region hacked and would play divx, so i got a refund.

the girl in the shop said they had got a load of them returned...

Does anyone know if this can play mpeg2 and/or divx files from a usb hard drive connected to the front usb port, and is it USB1 or USB2 ?

    Thanks

    Raymond
  • So many folks have returned their's i'm beginning to wonder if i'm the only person whose still got one ;-))

and i too got a problem...

wanted to see if disks from technika played on another machine so i bought a cheap alba dvd73 player from Sainsburys for £17.99.

To my surprise the alba will play DVD+RW disks that were recorded on the technika, with no problems.

But when it plays finalised DVD+R's that i recorded on the technika, the alba's picture is a few seconds normal followed by half-second of juddery picture and sound, all way through disk. These DVD+R's play okay on the technika.

Does anyone know why this is? Is the alba faulty or the technika?
  • I'd say the alba is faulty (alba's crap!). I've still got my technika...it's working fine. My finalised discs play on all the dvd players in the house.
In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

Mine has played everything except for the odd (probably corrupted) divx file.
Those that it could't play, wouldn't play on my PC with videolan(VLC) either, so I am well happy.
Maybe the quality control is not so good, having read others comments, but I'd be prepared to exchange and see if you get a good'n 'cos if you do this is a fantastic value budget machine which will perform well until the mystical dual freeview receiver with 300 gig hard disc with +, -, RAM dvd recorder for under £200 arrives.
For the moment, my Umax freeview hard drive recorder and the this Technika DVD recorder for archiving is just the job for my first steps beyond VCR + channels 1-5.
The only thing I want Sky for is for watching The Arsenal, and I can go down the pub when they are on and spend the savings on drowning my sorrows (away matches) or on a ticket for Highbury (joy). Well done Wigan and Roman's team.
