We buy presents for the adults if they don't have children, and for the ones that do we just buy for the children.
It seems a bit unfair to expect relatives to buy for children but to receive nothing in return just because they don't have children.

    We do this too.

Is it just my nephews and nieces who are so materialistic? Give them a craft set activity of some sort and they wouldn't be able to hide their dissapointment that it hasn't got a switch on the side and it can't be turned on.
  • I know totally where your coming from me and my OH dont have kids but his sister has 3 kids and they all ask for presents that are £40 upwards we get £10 between us if we're lucky. I think its a cheek for people to expect you to fork out a load of money for their kids and get stuff all in return!!

How can he be so cheeky and say that to you. Are the kids going to buy you something in a few years time? I dont think so!!

It really annoys me things like that! We have just got engaged and got nothing off his side of the family and my side of the family have give us money and gifts for it but we didnt expect anything its nice that we got something but we didn't ask for it.

If you love your nephews and neices why wouldn't you still want to get them a present? there's nothing better than seeing them open the presents you've got.

OP dont fall for this one its a conspiracy banded around by parents.

The reality is the spoilt rug rats will probably be ungrateful as you didnt buy the most expensive, latest in-thing for them, and will be prompty tossed across the room and ignored for the rest of the year.

Either just buy them primark socks, or get them nothing, dont fall for the guilt trips, Anyway that guilt can be easily allayed by spending the money on YOU.

We have a limit on the amount we spend on our nieces and nephews and this is done by ma and my sisters, we spend £10.00 on each child.

But someone once said to be well you have 3 children and one of your sisters has three children but you other one has 7, don't you get peed of that you spend more on her kids than she spends on your. I was a bit shocked as at the end of the day i see each child as an individual rather than that ones X's child and that ones y's child. We have however said that once they turn 18 that the gifts stop, and we don't buy for each other.

That's really sad:( Mine would be really pleased to recieve a craft kit (they love crafts) and even my eldest (13) doesn't expect 'something with a switch on the side' (which is for the best as he knows it is very unlikely he will get it :D).

OP - We buy Christmas pressies for the children and a small token gift for the adults (couple of £ choccie type thing or some home made wine, baby sitting vouchers etc.), if no children then the adult gets a pressie. We tend to cut off pressies when the child reaches 16 and instead start including their name on a larger pressie between the adults and older children, a family pressie such as a big tin of sweets.

I've never agreed with the 'children only get Christmas pressies' way of thinking, I want to give presents to the people I love and if that has to be a token gift due to funds they understand. I would never expect someone to buy for my children, let alone tell them so whilst informing them they will recieve nothing. Christmas definately should not be cancelled due to your not having children, your BIL has a blooming cheek telling you that you are 'expected' to buy something for his kids.

I only have one nephew so I spoil him really. He gets a limited spend from his aunts on the other side of the family, what with them having kids of their own.

Thinking about it though - I buy my brother pressie, my sis in law pressie and my nephew a pressie and I only get one back!

My brother seems to think that I should buy presents for his nephews and nieces on his wife's side. I do not agree, what do others think?

Why? Do you have a close relationship with them yourselves? Do they buy pressies for your family? I don't buy for my sisters partners family - I don't know any of them, though!

    Personally I would refuse to!

Go the whole hog and buy a pressie for the sister in law's aunt's mother's budgie!
