I just found this little beauty on Days Out Guide:

    http://www.daysoutguide.co.uk/oyster

£5 return to Brighton as well as loads of other destinations.

    Well spotted.
Note Some of these destinations might well be worth buying as singles, rather than paying full price.
I have a favourite memory of buying a 5.99 (if I remember correctly) National Express day return ticket on a cold dark Monday morning at about 05:30. I had to listen, as the driver patiently explained to a befuddled German family, going to London Heath Row airport (LHR), that "You just have to throw the other half away".
(The driver obviously thought that the Germans were "simple" and the Germans obviously thought that the English were "mad" - I think both were right:D;):D;) ).
  • Virgin Trains have 10,000 First Class Advance fares on sale for travel to and from London between 24 July and 5 September. It's only on for 5 days from 14 - 18 July, so book before they've all gone.

Visit the Virgin Trains website for more details.

    Prices start from £20! :T

Grand Central Trains are offering up to 50% off journeys to and from London until the middle of August.

One warning. If you have a Disabled Rail Card, don't enter it, as they are not valid for these journeys and you are not offered the special half-price fares. I wouldn't have discovered them, but after inadvertently logging out while booking, I forgot to enter my Railcard.

Black mark to Grand Central though, I spent an hour trying to resolve this anomaly with their foreign call centre yesterday. This morning when I rang the UK Centre to point it out, I was patronised by a very rude young man who told me it was my fault for not looking on the website properly!!

Had I not booked the ticket yesterday, I would have thought twice about travelling with them because of this rudeness.

The summer holidays are an expensive time of the year. Bargains are out there though.. I have just bought a Family Railcard for £26, valid for a year and I now have FREE membership for the YHA (Youth Hostel Association/also covers you for Hostels International) for the year too. Family Railcard saves you a 1/3 on adult tickets, 60% on childs' fares (age 5-15 years). Up to four adults and four children can travel on one card (you don't have to be related).

You can buy your Railcard online and get FREE YHA Family membership valued at £22.95! You are issued with two YHA cards (if you have two named adults living at the same address). Click on the Railcard website for full details. Not sure how long this offer is on for though...
:A if I had wings I would not need to buy so many shoes...
  • Hi
Over 55 and want to travel with Arriva Trains in Wales? DON'T BOTHER! These tickets don't exist....well not if you wish to return home on the same day! Just tried booking 10 different journeys from Shrewsbury and whilst I can get the £15.000 deal outwards, NONE exist for the return journey on the same day. Seems Arriva want you to book a hotel for a night however the original promotion mentions nothing of this. Arriva are taking the mickey and wasting MY TIME. Never again; I'll stick to the car.

BTW. Telephoned the number on the website these people can't apparently access tickests for you however she confirmed that tickets were essentially one way one day and return the next.

WHY DON'T YOU MENTION THIS IN YOUR MARKETING!
    Regards
    Still driving.

There are a few things that need to change to make rail cheaper and better for consumers but they seem to forever remain:
    1. Once you are on the platforms you should be allowed to go all the way to the end of the line and back to the correct station, getting fined for missing your stop is evil.
    2. If you have a ticket from A to Z you should be able to get on and off at any and all stations from B to Z.
    3. If there is no automated system preventing you getting on a train that is for "restricted" ticket types, then they should not be able to fine you, as they never provide a sufficient warning that you are about to be got.
    4. A ticket to travel should not be linked to a person, if the payment for travel has been made then anyone should be able to use the ticket.
There are probably many more simple common sense things that would make the train system more friendly and cheaper to use, does anyone know if there is a campaign in place to get these sorts of changes through?

I am trying to benefit from the east coast 3rd off for 3 or more deal, but price seems the same as when I did the initial search as 1 travelling. It's not an east coast run route i'm looking to book (norwich to london), but the stuff on their site doesn't say it has to be. Is this deal still running?
