New to train travel, wanting to take the children to Devon from Yorkshire in June.

Had a quick look on the train line and looks like tickets for the dates I want will be released in a few weeks.

But do I book tickets a soon as the dates are released? Or wait a few weeks?

Also will be getting a family railcard, but do I have to own it when I buy my tickets? Or just make sure I have it when we physically travel?

    Thanks in advance

First tip don't buy from the trainline as they add booking/credit card fees buy direct from any Train Company website ie First Great Western or Redspottedhanky if you have tesco clubcard points to use.

Yes, but maybe better to post your journey details on MSE as I'm sure somebody will help get the price down.

You can buy online without a railcard but you must have one to travel.

But this might be off interest for you, Family & friends online discount. 20% off until 14th March 2012 with code Halfterm20

Travelling from Wakefield to Newton Abbott

Out on Mon 4th June back Fri 8th June, 1 adult and 2 children travelling by direct train.

Coming out at £134 at mo return

Do have some Tesco vouchers, will find them out, but not much.

Would like to wait abit to buy railcard if I can as it lasts for 12 months and might go again next Easter.

Does the railcard just have to be valid on date of travel?

    Thanks in advance

    Unfortunately the direct train is run by Xcountry, whose cheap advance tickets are rubbish but on a quick check, random date in May;

Wakefield Stations to Newton Abbot dep 18:23 arr 23:05 £36:95 Advance single
Newton Abbot various times £58.25 Advance single so return for £95.20 with F&F railcard

Can get the price down to £107.40* if you don't mind going via London.

Another option would be to split tickets at one or more of the following Birmingham NS, Cheltenham or Bristol TM.

For every £10 of Clubcard vouchers these can be exchanged for £20 of travel RSH vouchers see here

    hi

Could anyone offer any advice please?

I bought 2 lots of on-line tickets with London-Midland, they didnt arrive. I rang and emailed and was told they wouldnt replace then, and they wouldn't refund me.

I'm due to travel to London on 5th for the day, I have booking refernces but no tickets, are they allowed to do this?

I have Passenger Focus looking into it, no news as yet. Trying to get a solution asap.

    thanks

  • My daughter has just found out that you can link your (student) railcard to your Oyster card for travel in London, therefore getting your 1/3 off tube fares. TFLs best kept secret.

  • £14 in tesco vouchers gives you a free Family & Friends Railcard, 16 - 25 railcard or senior railcard. They send you a code that you put in on Railcard website, really easy, just done it for 2nd year running.

If you buy a ticket from Newcastle to Telford, can you board the train at Darlington (the first or second stop after Newcastle)?

Newcastle to Telford has much cheaper singles than Darlington to Telford!
