Scratching my head about Sky+

why bother, just get a freeview box with a hard drive so yuo can record programmes, they start at about £75.00"An arrogant and self-righteous Guardian reading tvv@t".
!!!!!! is all that about?0 -
just to add to what i said earlier about not needing a bt landline. i think it does have to be bt if you want to get their broadband otherwise any landline will do.0

You can't do this if you have multiroom as they send you threatening letters saying you need to have both boxes plugged into the phone line to prove you haven't given one to a mate!0 -
What " £25 " is that, can you provide a link, I have never heard of such a charge.
There is no link.
If you have no phone line then sky will charge you £25 to activate the card over the phone, this is called a manual inablement charge. You can't be lost if you don't know where you're going.0 -
When I first started with Sky (years ago - have now just cancelled and am on my last couple of weeks of sky plus; just ordering a humax
) I received some very nasty letters from sky telling me that my sky was not connected to the phone line and that they were going to disconnect my service. I spent a long time on an 0870 number (listening to their b****y advertising:mad: ) insisting that that was not true, and this happened several times until they finally sent an engineer round to check. Turned out that the box was faulty, and they replaced it, surprisingly, at their own cost...! I questioned why this was such a big deal, and said I thought that it was because they want me to buy stuff, but was told that it is because if you don't have the connection, they suspect you are giving the service to a neighbour at cut price. Weird. Anyway, all this was eventually stopped, but only after a great deal of grief.. Just one example of the disgusting manner in which sky treat their customers; I only had it while my son was home and am delighted to be leaving them.
Cheers

We have multiroom (the second box is in my room upstairs) and a couple of years ago I redecorated my room, which obviously meant taking all the electrical stuff out. When I put it all back I must have done it wrong and ended up with the Sky box not being plugged in.
My dad kept getting threatening letters about the box not being plugged in and didn't know what they were on about; as far as he knew nothing had changed. I was away in Australia at the time and when it dawned on me I had to talk him through reconnecting it all the right way round from thousands of miles away!0 -
Firstly i'd say what does your daughter actually want Sky+ for? If it is for the extra channels that you get with Sky, then find out which ones she wants to watch, then look for the best package that suits you. This will cost an initial fee plus a monthly contract.
However, if she wants it because of the clever ways it can record programmes, pause TV, rewind live TV, etc (the difference between Sky and Sky+). but will still just watch Freeview channels, then there are different options that are about the same price, but with no monthly subscription (and easy to wrap and put under the Xmas tree!)
Finally if you do go the Sky+ route, they regularly have introductory offers for existing subscribers to recommend a friend. This month the offer is both the existing subscriber and the new subscriber gets £50 each of M&S vouchers). I'm sure you know a friend or neighbour (or your daughter will!) who can oblige. Obviously you'll need to balance this against any other offers you can find.0 -

So, according to you, Sky can effectively charge what they like without making any documented reference to it, I don't think so.
BTW what does " inablement " actually mean?:rolleyes:0 -

Wouldn't normally agree with jackthenipper either, but to be fair, if you google "manual enablement charge," there's quite a few posts about it over different forums, though I couldn't see anything in the SKY T&C's.
Maybe he should have stated what the whole charge was in his initial post though - a £25 charge to get the card enabled manually if you have no phone line connected to your box.Dave. :wave:0
