You can achieve a similar capability with Freeview (Terrestrial via an aerial) by buying a personal video recorder or PVR, google for the Humax 9200 as an example of the breed.

Or if you're in a cable area by a V+ box which is the equivalent of Sky+ but has three tuners so you can watch live TV while recording two channels.

    Hayley,

How old is DD? I only ask as it may have a bearing on what package you subscrie to. This will be a monthly commitment and you need to ensure you aren't mis-sold anything by Sky CS.

If she's a teenager, or near as dammit (they grow up so fast these days), then I'd recommend asking Sky for their Sky Comination with Sky+. This includes their 'Entertainment Package' - this will give you all 6 mix packages (channel groupings such as music, lifestyle, etc) but won't include premium movie or sports channels, unlimited calls to UK landlines (calls to mobiles and other types of numbers cost extra) and broadband up to 2mb download speeds - all for £27 per month - although you will need to pay £99 for the Sky+ box. Still it is relatively good value for money.
  • Hi Studio

She is 9, and I also have a six year old, so was thinking about the children's package. I think I can get it for £17 a month - but am so confused by their web site I am really not sure. I am tied into a BT Broadband/Phone package so no point me doing the surf and speak thing that they advertise. Well at least not at the time being.

Further down the line I would recommend their broadband. Mine is very fast. I would not switch my telephone line to them though as you will get into difficulty should you wish to switch provider at a later date.

You can already get CBBC and CBeebies for free assuming you are getting freeview, have you looked at the Kids channels on Sky they are all American, Nickleodeon trouble and such like.
The basic mix is entertainment, i.e Sky One etc, adding the kids mix stick another pound on the bill £18 per month. i.e £216 per year + the one off installation costs.
The Christmas gift that keeps on costing!

What do I need to order Sky?

You need a BT landline and a television to enjoy Sky TV.

So presumably that's to get Sky and you need something else for Sky+?

you dont have to have a bt landline. we have a virgin media land line and our box is connected to that. why they connect to your phone line i dont know. the difference between sky and sky+ is with sky+ it has a built in hard drive were you can store programmes that you have recorded onto the box useing the on screen guide.

You are incorrect, its part of Sky's T&Cs that the Sky Box is connected to a telephone line for the initial 12 month period. They will wave this for a fee.
If its not connected certain interactive services, Box office movie purchases and the like wont work.

  • You are correct, you need to connect to a phone line for a minimum of 12months however when the engineer leaves just pull the connection out, as long as you dont want to book box office or use interactive they will never need to know. This will save you paying the one off £25 to activate the viewing card.

What " £25 " is that, can you provide a link, I have never heard of such a charge.
