i havent been posting so much lately as i dont have much happening here but it would be great to read about more OS things, am sure Jackie0 could give us lots of tips and a few more of us could too but still nice to read about everyones day and give support if necessary

am off to read everyones comments now
  • Hi all

I have to say I am suprised at the 'anger' that seems to be directed at the Daily thread from some people on here, but appreciate the points of views from others that I haven't 'met' before.

I joined the thread about 2 months ago and felt welcomed from the start. I try to post recipes etc if I think someone would like them and I have picked up many useful tips on here. Yes, sometimes I know I am guilty of just chat lately, my mind has been preoccupied with other things, but I do try to mention the meals I am cooking etc as I am aware it isn't just a chat thread.

All that being said - I really don't feel the Arms is the place for this thread. I post over there on various topics and threads and it really is not the place for more serious discussions... people try, but there is a big element of people who just want to have fun and do hijack threads with off topic or sarcastic comments. This doesn't matter if you are discussing Strictly Come Dancing or the X factor, but I would hate for that to happen to our Daily Thread.

Maybe the answer (as others have said) is to just remember to be a little more OS and a little less chat - but allowing for the fact that some of us do need more support at times and that a Daily thread to me, means a thread where you can post things that you wouldn't necessarily post on other threads. ('Over the fence' described by my gran always did include local gossip etc)

Sorry to rattle on, and am sad that people think the Daily is a waste of space when we have such great people posting on there.

But as you clearly hate the thread then it seems sensible that you don't read it. It has been here for years and I'm sure there are others who feel as you do yet somehow they have just managed to ignore it and still find the threads they are looking for.

I for one am not interested in The Weight Loss thread or somebody's war against Sodastreams but rather than post to tell them that I'm not interested, I just don't join in.
Right as you have decided to make this personal and actually gone to the trouble of looking up my back posts for ammunition.(The words get a life come immediately to mind)
I'm surprised you haven't pointed out how many times you have been thanked as well.
But as one of you friends has already pointed out on this thread they thank every single post in the Daily Thread. Which makes a mockery of the thanks system. It is just a cliquey love in thread.

And by the way pet the sodastream thread is appropriate and on topic it is a consumer thread on a consumer forum where we are sharing information about a company which is ripping off its customers.
And if the board guides started a thread asking your opinions on it then you would be entitled to state your opinion
And again which part of, the board guides asked for our opinions are you having problems understanding.

And as for the weightloss thread I wouldn't know anything about it I have never posted in it.

And again your nasty !!!!!y lets make it personal attitude is sums up why I wish it was in the chat forum with the rest of the chatter threads.

  • And permission was given by the MSE team to have the Daily thread on the OS board. Why are you so desperate to see it moved? Can't you just ignore it as you hate it so much and think we are all so pathetic?

Sorry but you have just said you no longer post on it, why? Face no longer fit?

You can tell who is in vogue at any given time, they get a personal mention, out of fashion and you don't. Cliquiest board ever

I really thought the OS daily could have done with a few little changes like keep it a bit on track but if it's keeping away posters like this I say keep it as is. :D

I felt sick when I read this thread headline. Firstly everybody was a newby on the OS once. It is a very friendly supportive thread. We all try to save our money, be OS with varying degrees of success. Just because I can't do something(knitting or sewing for example)doesn't mean that I don't want to hear about people that do.
We bobble along and do our best. The thread has supported me loads of time and I try to return the support in whatever way I can.
If it were to be moved to the arms I for one would not post. I had an experience of the arms recently and it just about pushed me over the edge(it was at a particularly difficult time)-I honestly believe if the board guide hadn't stepped in when I asked her to and removed the thread totally I don''t know what would have happened.
As to the poster that wants us to "get out and talk to real people" its not always THAT easy. I live in a house I hate, with neighbours that hate and despise us. This morning I have removed 16 cigarette buts from my path and neither of us have ever smoked. That has a twofold effect. Firstly it re enforces my isolation and makes me very reluctant to leave the house. Secondly it makes me value the friendships on here even more, and yes they are friendships- I am in contact in the "real world" with a number of OS'ers. I am currently trying to arrange a trip down south and will be meeting/staying with an OS er hopefully.
i have no close family or friends nearby and having the board has helped me so much even though no one on the board had any idea of what was really going on.
The answer is simple really-if you don't like it don't post. It does NO harm at all and an awful lot of good. Is that such a bad thing?

Having not read ANY of the other replies.. here are my immediate feeling/thoughts..

© The Daily has now become a thread about people’s lives, be they Old Style or not.

I thought that was the idea behind the OS daily.. everyone seems to be pushed there if they discuss anything lifey on a topic thread.

If on any other 'lifestyle' thread.. eg. weight loss, you mention something about your life other than losing weight you are told to take it over to the daily.. but there you are not among posters you 'know' or 'trust' so people don't. It is VERY cliquey .. even I usually only browse it and I am not usually put off by other people but it is a little community of its own and it is hard for outsiders to infiltrate. I have posted and more often than not my posts as an outsider are ignored.. totally.

© Several long-standing posters have stopped contributing, as they feel the thread is no longer relevant to them. Ditto above

© Many posters feel that the Daily Thread on the Old Style board has become more of a support group, rather than a place to discuss our Old Style days. It has.. but this can be remedied by allowing members to stay in their 'thread' and discuss their issues with their fellow thread members.. eg weightloss.. losing your mum or having a sick sister IS relevant to your weight so it is appropriate you post there with people you trust and know.

© Some people say that they post about Old Style things, which are just ignored amongst the general chat.

I've done that.. posted not ignored.

© It has been mentioned that people who want to chat about general topics have plenty of places to do so (such as Discussion Time or The Money Savers Arms) but Old Stylers have nowhere else to go.

I don't venture onto other boards, nor do I wish to.. there is enough going on here to occupy me.. so the Arms and DT aren't an option.. I WANT to stay here with the people I 'know' I think these individual boards have become so busy it is almost impossible to live on more than one and have time to eat and breathe!

I feel the daily thread is of great importance to those who use it but to everyone else it is insignificant. I don't think it should be removed because it is a vital support for those who do use it and that is what the site is about.. support.. and what is more old style than support for others in their time of need? Free advice and a place to vent.. that is all some people need and that is what the daily thread offers, in time the posters do move on which is why some people say it is no longer relevant to them.. it isn't because they don't NEED that level of support.. the same as I do not use parenting site any more.. I have outgrown the need for them.

I say leave it be.. it is popular and working so why is it even being discussed? It doesn't do any harm and there are so many other repeat posts, irrelevant posts etc.

Lilibeth, I've read Haribo's threads and posts for a long time and I have never known her be nasty or sarcastic to anyone. I think that for some reason this thread has pressed a button for you and made you really angry. You even had a pop at my innocent little post.

It is right that everyone should have their say about this topic, but there is a line to be drawn when it comes to personal attacks.

Let us all say what we want to say, make our points - but do it with some kind of dignity and civility.

I have wandered into that thread a couple of times and then wandered back out again.
It is a chat thread nothing more.
It just takes up valuable thread space on an important and useful board.

I don't think it belongs in here, can't it be moved to the ' The Money Savers Arms' with the other pointless threads.
I mean I think it's fab that bettymilkbottlelids has managed to put out her washing today and that she averted a near disaster when seagull two miles away nearly headed in her direction and pooed on her dear sons favourite pair of batman pyjamas that she got from the catalogue (he has nightmares if he wears a different pair).
I mean seriously, well done you, but I don't think we should pretend it is other than what is. A chat thread

But the thread doesn't need to change it just needs to be moved. It isn't fair on people who come to use this forum for the purpose it was intended for. It just takes up space.
Martin did not set this place up as a cliquey little chat forum.
It is a consumer and money saving forum.
However he has provided a place for chat 'The Money Savers Arms' the thread could be moved there..

If you don't like the thread why go into it? It does not need to be moved. It's title tells you what it is. It is just one thread a day on one forum. Am I missing something because I really cannot see what the problem is. As for it taking up space well won't it take up space on Arms?

The Arms is the worst possible place to put it. No threads on there ever stay on topic or stay serious. It is a very cliquey forum with a lot of posters wanting to make inane or belittling posts.

    Lilibeth,

you seem to be on here for an argument, which I will not be drawn into, you have given your opinion, which I think is now enough.
Fabulous so you are in essence telling me not to post on this thread anymore.
So you and your friends just shut down anyone who posts an opinion you don't like.
    Are you a moderator now?

I really thought this was a great consumer forum but after the behaviour of you and HariboJunkie this morning telling people what they can and cannot post and actually looking through peoples posting history to personally attack them, well frankly I'm starting to reconsider.

If anyone other than you two (please don't either of you contact me) know any other consumer forums that have an OS board I'd be grateful if you would PM me with it.

    I've had enough.
You and your friends have won.
