I think that the board should have a little less chat and some more OS tips if thats whats wanted but i am ok with it being left the same I have never felt put off about posting on this board I went to the DFW daily thread once and not one person acknowledged me or said hi I dont particularly like the arms as some posters are quite aggressive and also i find some of the discussions quite vulgar and distastfull
P.S. I say thanks so i know where i am up to not to up peoples thanks count

It would be a shame if the daily has to be changed as its obviously filling a real need for some people.

I would never have gone to the Daily for OS tips though, because I've always seen it as a chat thread; I’ve never got involved in it because I spend my time on other specific threads and forums.

The one negative I have is that I get the daily email with the round up of OS updates and often by the time I get to check out what looks like an interesting new thread its been merged with the daily; I tried a few times but now I rarely bother to try to track it down.

I rarely venture from OS these days and I hardly ever follow a thread when its moved to DT - I don't need to come to MSE for a fight, I only need to call on some of my family :D

Edited to add - I just wanted to clarify that I've never posted on the daily because I choose to be more active on other threads, not because I find it cliquey; I did find it intimidating when I was an OS newbie, but then I found all threads intimidating until I started posting and got to know a few people.

Sad to see some posters here getting aggressive - come on girls, please this is OS not DT! ;)

Whereas here they dress it up a bit nicer so it doesn't look like they are belittling anyone when in fact they are :D

I'm sorry but I read the thread almost every day and I don't remember seeing any threads which belittle another poster whereas on the Arms it is a regular occurrence.

I don't like the Arms so I no longer go there why is it so difficult for people who do not like the daily thread just not to read it?

If people want a thread where they can just chat and thank each other, that's fine, but I'd rather it wasn't on this board. Other people feel differently - we can all say what we think. This shouldn't get personal.

Why would you rather it was not on this board? I am not trying to be argumentative - I am genuinely puzzled as to why people think it should not be on this board. As I said before, it is ONE thread each day in a board which otherwise is all about moneysaving tips, recipes etc. It is clearly marked so you have no need to go into it by accident.

To me the majority of the posters in this particular thread are unlikely to post in the Arms. If the thread was moved to there it would be full of posters taking the p**s and why should we accept that?

As I said, I like reading the thread. It always seems to me like a friendly group of friends chatting and I don't see what is so wrong with that. I feel newcomers are made to feel welcome and I like the fact that people get to know each other (even if it is only on a website) and care about other people's lives. Most of us do not lead particularly thrilling lives and often the only things we have to talk about is cooking, cleaning, worries about our family. There is nothing wrong with that.

I don't see any harm in having an over the fence chatty daily thread. I don't have time to read it very often (or to post there) but now and then - particularly if I'm stressed or having a hard time - I quite like to browse through the posts...it has a "cosy" feel that makes me feel better.

I agree that it can be frustrating to have other threads merged with the daily - I can see why it happens but it is annoying when I follow a thread I am interested in and have to trawl through the daily posts to find it - that said, I feel that I would rather the other threads are left alone than merged with the daily thread. I can understand how important the daily is to those that need it - and who are we to judge what other peoples needs are?

I thoroughly disagree that the arms or discussion time would be a suitable venue - the arms scares me ( and I know I'm not alone in feeling this way). It is no place for the (mostly ) friendly helpful folk on the OS board unless they choose to go there of their own free will. If the daily is moved there I think it will die.

I rather like the idea of 2 daily threads - one for quick tips and one for chat, but if we are restricted to 1 thread then I say leave it alone.

I never really understand why people complain about thread topics. I read what suits me, am grateful for anything that helps me, and am often amused by anecdotes that are posted. This is a diverse, interesting and useful board. As in "real" life not everyone will like everything, but a bit of compromise, politemness and good nature would be appreciated by us all I think.

Hope all that made sense as I'm typing as I think and don;t have time to re-read and edit

Happy days everyone - I for one would be lost without OS

I have always enjoyed the Daily, but generally speaking these days I only tend to drop in a couple of times a week. I do not find it cliquey per se, but then again I have been around since the Daily began. One of the contributory factors to my not posting as frequently is the fact that most of the current regulars on the Daily are people who I have not really formed a bond with, mainly because they have joined since I stopped being a really active member of the thread, so I haven't really got to know them. I don't see this as cliqueyness, just as something from which I've grown apart.

I do not have the most OS lifestyle in the world (single, no kids, good income), but running my home economically and traditionally (i.e. Old Style :D) is important to me. However once I have subtracted my working hours, sleeping hours and manic social life (:o) there aren't that many hours left in the week, and I'd rather spend the time that's left actually DOING the household tasks rather than talking/posting about them. That's nothing personal to anybody, and isn't a criticism of the Daily Thread. It's just the way it is.

There is definitely more chat and less OS talk on here than there used to be, so when I do come onto the OS board to think about something specific and on-topic, I tend to read/post on specific threads rather than on the Daily. I do most of my chat in the Arms, on Facebook, or elsewhere (including with the lovely friends I've met through this forum).

I think it would be a shame if the only people who felt at home on the Daily were isolated housewives and the long term sick, but I do think the chat element of the thread is very important because these people form such a large part of the OS community. It would be a great loss to the board and to its members if this function was removed.

Sorry, that doesn't really go very far towards suggesting a solution.

Rzl has summed it up perfectly for me to apart from I don't have a social life my 3 year old does :rotfl: .

I would also like to point out the reason that there is so many thanks on the daily is this was agreed as a way of saying "Hi" awhile ago when there was another problem with the thread and people mentioning everybody by name.

I love the OS board, and the Daily thread is one I always read.To be honest as a newcomer I thought its purpose was more of a chat than anything else.I've never felt unwelcome- I certainly don't post everyday and don't have time to catch up after a certain time,so I do miss some of the later posts.
I find it interesting to read about other peoples lives in other parts of the country(sometimes different countries)Sometimes people slip in a comment about something they've bought which makes me go and look for myself-I would have been unaware without this thread.
I don't really see what the problem is- if you don't like the daily then you don't have to read it,there are probably several ongoing threads that I never visit, but I wouldn't want them scrapped if they serve a purpose for some people- lets face it in todays world we need all the help we can get

  • Are we allowed to ask how many negative comments you have received and from how many people? I am pretty sure that compared to the amount of people that actually do post or read the daily, it would be a VERY small percentage and surely we need to go with the majority:confused:

I know that my posts can contain medical issues or personal problems but as a long time poster on the Old-Style board I feel comfortable and at home here and regard many as my friends. I try and include some OS even if someone else in my household does it. I feel a fraud sometimes with regards to OS because I dont contribute much to my family, but reading the daily I see that others arent perfect either. I have had sarcastic comments about my posts but like other posters have stated…you don’t have to read them if you don’t want too!

Mostly though, I have received nothing but support and kindness through my experience on Old-Style and this goes back a few years.

I think it would be a shame if the thread was moved to another board and I for one would not post on there as the atmosphere just wouldn’t be the same.

Some days I do find the thread very long and I don’t have the energy to get through all the posts. I find the pictures and cartoons annoying, but that’s my own personal opinion and I don’t mean any malice in that. Someone mentioned about making 1 post a day and then going back to edit if needed….this isn’t a bad idea, but obviously if something life changing happened then it would have to be in real time.

However, I do think it’s very sad that new posters aren’t feeling welcome and them thinking that OS is a cliche!. I also miss many of our old time posters.

I’m also very shocked with some of the bitterness shown on this thread today.

I was very shocked too.. moreso by the people behind some of it..

I think due to the nature of such groups new people trying to infiltrate will always feel it is a bit of a clique.. nature of the beast I am afraid but they have to be stronger and push themselves in.. I know it can appear like that on many threads.. knitters, flylady, weightloss, there have even been people apologising for posting on the morphy richards breadmaker thread because they have a different one!!...

Why are they trying to fix something that is not broken??

I'm beginning to wonder what is happening with this forum these days as it used to be a cosy warm sort of place where you could natter and exchange info but now it seems we have to be all business like and cut the nattering and just post the info.A similar sort of rejig as the one proposed to the Daily thread has happened on the Grocery Challenge thread and its just not the same any more as everyone is so scared of having their posts deleted that they hardly post any more.I for one say leave the daily thread alone.I like nothing better than sitting down with a brew and reading it through.I dont always post but I like to know what others are up to
