Thank you for all the constructive comments on this topic. Pink-winged and I have read them carefully and pulled out the following statistics:

104 people posted on this thread. Of those:
    • 59 wanted the Daily to stay as it is
    • 20 wanted more Old Style discussion and less non-OS chat
    • 25 posted but gave no indication of their wishes
Can we emphasise that Old Style chat isn't an issue; it's the vast amount of non-Old Style chatter that many people have commented upon.

Obviously, if someone has difficulties in their life, then Old Style posters are here to give help and support; no-one wants to take that away.

If we can keep the posts of a broadly Old Style nature, then there'll be no further complaints.

Hopefully we can all put this behind us and move on ;) This thread will be closed later today.

Best wishes, Penny and Pink x

what classes as non-OS chat? .. Is chat by nature OS?? I know 'waffle' I do my fair share.. more than some would say lol.. but if lifes problems, money issues, what to have for dinner are all OS.. and ready meals, 6 figure sum in the bank not followed by DR are not.. what else would be a 'not' .. it is a bit woolly just to say OS chat allowed.. non-OS chat not allowed..

Or maybe I am such a church mouse waif that I only know OS lol...

    Can we have more clarification?

Of course you can ;) Look at yesterday's Daily - lots of posts discussing quince (what is it, where can you get it, difficulties with supply this year, what to do with it) is OS as it's to do with recipes and ingredients.

Chat of itself is not OS; I like to think of Old Style as what used to be Domestic Science (mainly covered by cooking, cleaning, home-crafts, and by convention here includes growing fruit and veg, and domestic farm-animal keeping).

Non-OS chat is posts that are solely about, for instance, where you're going on holiday, funny things said by children, what a ninny your boss is, etc, etc. If these topics are included in posts that are of a broadly OS nature, that'll be fine.

Hope that clarifies it for you :D

  • Hi all

The BGs seem to have sorted this out nicely so I'll just leave a couple of reminders.

As I've said before, this board is what you guys, ie everyone that reads and posts, makes of it so it's up to you to self-moderate and keep threads on topic if you want them to stay on topic.

Please also remember this is a lovely family, community board for old style MoneySaving and it's really a shame to see swearing on it, even if it is disguised. Please don't do that.

    Thanks everyone

    Have a great day

    Andrea :)

I do feel that as this thread was meant to be about hints and tips, we should all try and keep focused on that objective, otherwise it makes it difficult for people coming to the thread to learn things without getting mired down in the particular details of all our lives. Whilst these details are interesting to some people, they are probably irrelevant to financially pressurised individuals who are trying save money or run their lives in a more beneficial way. Perhaps we should all think before posting, and if it's not a specifically Old Style comment, cut and paste it into the Money Saving Arms thread instead.

lol at the thanking thread :D

I use the thanks because I want to say 'hi' but have nothing else to say to the person at the time - well, nothing useful anyway :D

And that's why I have never persued this part of the board!! I even mentioned the "Thanking" thing (way back)and wasn't that thrilled with the reply.

Some of us who are practising black belt frugality don't have the time to wade through loads of stuff like who did what when, to maybe ( if you are lucky) find a gem of an idea.

For what it's worth I also find it very dissapointing when someone asks a question and I answer it or give some other useful information that no one has the courtesy to even say thank you:confused: I make a point of doing that, even on older threads, it is a sign of appreciation.

Yet the daily "Hiya/ Thank you" thread has gone on apace.

May I suggest that you start a "Daily chit chat/support" forum within the site where these people can go? and the rest of us can give and take quick and pertinent advice?/tips;)

Thanks for the laugh JOYCE GRENVILL.

Oh, just thought , you may not have heard of Joyce Grenville, she used to do a brilliant monlogue as a school teacher trying to keep a class of little ones in order. You're 'please don't do that' was classic and so apt. Brilliant!!

Just read through some of the replies, I haven't used the daily for a while myself as I always feel guilty if I can't reply to everyone personally, maybe I should if people don't mind that. I do prefer it as an over the fence thread with OS mixed in. I do have a read through and pick up tips/be nosey when I have time.
One day I might be more organised...........

On the Old Style board, there are already several threads for quick and pertinent advice, one of which is a sticky at the top of the board!
The daily is about our lives and yes, there should be old style comments in the posts.

The comments on this thread about the Daily thread make it sound as though the posters on the daily only ever gossip on there and offer no advice on any other subject or thread on the OS board.

The board guides do a fantastic job in merging new questions with older threads so that posters can benefit from the advice and hints and tips given, quite often by posters who no longer post.

A lot of the threads which are ongoing....If things get tougher, Save on gas and electric, Weezl's 50p a day, OS weightloss to name but 4 have an element of chat and off topic comments on them.

All I can say is watch out all threads it could be your posters next that are under scrutiny, don't chat too much or the board guides will be receiving PM's

    I've been Money Tipped!
    :hello:Hello!

Only just found this thread (was taken into hospital in a bit of a hurry Monday but don't worry, I won't bore you with all that one, ;))

Just wanted to say that I love the daily but don't always have the stamina to read all the way through it and worry a lot if I have missed someone out etc., the thanks button panics me tbh :rotfl::o

I used to love reading other folks daily meal plans, what they were baking and about the os projects they were working on mixed up with little family happenings etc., also thought it was great for support to those that needed it.

Anyway I am sure it will resolve itself as it has before, I can remember this board before the daily came into being and it was brought about by Squeaky (another one missing in action), Gingham and Pink so that we had somewhere to chat and not "clog" up the other threads.

Three cheers for the board guides.....Hip hip............

    love Catz x
