Well I have managed to read through the 12 pages of this, via a dial up connection, that keeps dropping out, so I hope you all appreciate this!
What I observe is that some OSers would like to see things as they were, and thanks P-Pixie for being honest with us, I would like to know who else have pm'd - not to have a go, not my style, but on a serious discussion point. You mentioned Queenie, Maths and others I cannot recall, who do not post now, do they not post because of the chat, or because their lives have changed?
We have had some very inflamatory and argumentative posts from some very new MSE'rs which is always suspicous IMHO, and unfortunately some BG's are upset, which I find regrettable for the work they do. H-J you and I can throw the dummy out of the cot with each other without trying, but I am with you on this.;)
I think there is some confusion on what represents OSing, not all of us can be total domestic goddesses, which can bake like a dream, produce a cordon bleu meal out of not a lot in 30 seconds flat, dressmake, knit, crochet, garden, keep animals, do craftwork, etc., keep on top of the washing and ironing, and alway have the house show-house state, and how this relates to money saving. This is not a DFW thread, though it does try to support those who need help with moneysaving. I also believe it is about being there for each other too.
I have been in the daily thread for almost two years now, I read about it via support for Stormbay, two Christmas's ago. Cliquey - no I wouldn't still be here if it was, yes some people click with each other and communicate in and out of the thread. As for the hussies, no I do not know who they all are, if anyone does!
What has the thread done for me, well I always knew how to cook from scratch (though never cordon bleu) and never totally dropped it, but mixed it with some convenience meals while working full time, I could always sew, knit, crochet, etc., but it had been hidden away. The thread reminded me, guided me back, and yes I slip by the wayside frequently, but less and less. The thread is there when you need it, and everyone is supportive. I also have stocks of microfibre clothes, stardrops and white vinegar out here too, and have DH converted.
Maybe an idea for the pictures making the thread large is to do them all on a link rather than in the thread itself, then the choice is there to open or not depending on interest or time. I haven't been saying much recently as life is good, I am out in the sun, so I am sure you don't want me repeating how hot it is when you are having to put the heating on or its raining again.
Personally - I scan what I want and read what I want and it suits me as it is.

If just 1 person, who objects to the chat on the OS thread, was to read post 229 and still object to chatter then I belive there is no OS. Old Style is not only about saving money it's also about saving friends in need of a friend/neighbour/shoulder etc.
I have seen so many progs about the 1st and 2nd world war and how little people had and how they had to cope. One thing that kept people going was the fact that others were there to help, whether it was to swap suger for marg or for some-one to listen. They lived through what we are striving to achieve.
That's OS. ....sadly some think it's all about saving pennies.
I would not have coped at times, to do OS, if I couldn't share my ups and downs on the thread with the most caring people..0 -
They say that there are six degrees of separation between anyone on the planet.
Totally off topic I know, but may I suggest anyone who gives any credence to this oft quoted idea reads the book " The Tiger That Isn't" by Michael Blastland and Andrew Dilnot? It really is a good read, and gets to grips with the blatant manipulation of numbers by so many parties.Penelope_Penguin wrote: »Churchmouse - no, you can't freeze milk, dear, not until you're a much more experienced Old Styler :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I used to be a regular poster on the daily. I have not posted for a long time, but have read the posts from time to time and if I felt able to comment on an issue I have done so to the person concerned by PM.
This is not a new issue.....from time to time it rears its head again.
I have read the various comments and have to say I can see both sides, I do feel that the daily strays from its path from time to time, but this is inevitable with this type of thread.
It can be cliquey....... at the same time new posters are welcomed. For some people routine is what their day is all about and thats all they have to post about.
As a lady well into the third age I had experience which I was happy to pass on, if people didn't agree with it, that was fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however it was backstabbing of the most hurtful kind which made me stop posting........the older posters amoung you will remember. I was told in no uncertain terms to clear off, so I did.
Personally I've had a lousy summer with OH spending most of it in hospital, but I did not feel that the daily was the place to post about it.........so in view of what had perviously occured I didn't.Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0 -
I am totally stunned and shocked that my two posts seem to have caused so much upset, and have been taken as 'attacks'. I certainly didn't intend to cause upset, definitely wasn't 'attacking' anyone, and honestly cannot see how or why people have read any of that into what I said. I can only apologise if my posts have come across so very differently to the way they were intended.
As far as I was concerned, I was making a serious point about internet security, but with a light-hearted tone. Obviously none of that has come across.
The only thing I can see which is easily misinterpreted is the fact that I used the word 'you' when speaking generally. It would have been clearer - but colder - to have said "if one does this, if one does that", rather than if "you do this" if "you do that". But wouldn't that have given away the fact that I'm actually Prince Charles posting under an alias?I did point out that the post was 'general', but that seems to have been missed.
I haven't read the daily thread, but I know what chat threads look like. A number of posts in THIS thread (which I HAVE read) have certainly referred to people talking about their personal lives.
I do worry about internet security. And when something triggers those worries, I do post about it - as on here. Annie made a fair point about self-expression, and people's right to choose what they want to share or not, whether there's a risk that can be identified or not.
My answer was intended to point out that it's all too easy to give away other people's identities and private business by accident. You can only avoid that by never talking about what friends and family have done/said. That's what I meant when I said "if you only talk about you, and your feelings etc" - I think this is clearer if you read the whole of my post. It was in no way a suggestion that people should talk/do only talk about themselves, with no regards for the concerns or interest of other posters - and I am extremely sorry that it has been taken that way.
My examples were chosen randomly, from memories of agony columns and personal conversations.
However, my original post was meant to be an aside to the main discussion - not the focus  . When you're in a place where you feel 'safe' and 'supported' it's all too easy to forget that your message can be read by anyone - not just the people you consider your friends.0 -

I appreciate what you are saying here cc - a new poster had added the names and dob of her children to here signature, which was nicely pointed out to her in a PM of the risks. If I feel I have said something which may be TMI then I will go back a little later and either change or remove my post.

Thanks donny-gal - it's all too easily done - and, no, I'm not speaking entirely theoretically!0 -
I'm somewhat uneasy about posting this, but as this thread has now gone so far off topic that I couldn't let this post pass without comment ...........As a lady well into the third age I had experience which I was happy to pass on, if people didn't agree with it, that was fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however it was backstabbing of the most hurtful kind which made me stop posting........the older posters amoung you will remember. csarina - you, I and many of the other "older posters" know that is only one half of the story why you stopped posting on Old Style last year. There is another side to that story

Please don't close the daily thread!
I only stumbled on it on Sunday, and had no idea that there were communities like that on MSE...I'm usually after the tesco codes, to be honest. It's such a friendly bunch of folk.
Re-name it if you like, but please don't create a new troup of refugees!!
By the way, a dictionary of abbreviations would be useful, if anyone could give me a pointer??? DW, OS etc etc
