Hi mad_cash_cow,
I promise you that the Daily thread is definitely not going to be closed, moved or changed radically.
For help with abbreviations click on the first link on this thread:

To everyone else, I appologise for throwing my toys out of my pram yesterday. My only excuse is that there were other things going on in real life that got me down a bit, but I shouldn't have let that influence my posts on the board. Sorry.

Glad to see you back PW, we all have our off days
have a dodgy hug! :grouphug:
... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Pink-winged you have absolutely nothing to apologise for:D There are plenty that have tossed the toys, you were not amongst them. I thought you made a very dignified retreat:p
I never really thought the thread was in danger of being discontinued altogether, but did panic at the thought of it going to the Arms:eek:
Oh and typing this has made me remember, to those who suggested all chat should be done on an instant messenger type thing, you can obviously type a lot faster than me. The one and only time I tried to participate on one of these I was always 6 posts behind:o :rotfl: Not conducive to chat, believe me:DYou never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
 Ooh Pen and Pink I'm ever so sorry that you've been put in such a difficult position.
And to everybody who is upset on either end of the debate...I am sad about that too.
I have an opinion of course!
I think every board needs “Community Threads”
They may not always be explicitly and rigorously on topic - but I believe the fact that they exist and thrive demonstrates the need for them.
Every board has a distinct personality and people may feel comfortable here on the bosom of OS but a little frightened of The Arms and its mischief makers - which I have seen suggested as a more suitable position for the Old Style Daily.
If people are - for whatever reason - feeling a bit isolated or lacking in support in their real lives but they feel at home on Old Style and they make friends here, what’s wrong with that? It’s a very nurturing OS sentiment to lend support to those who need it – isn’t it?
I think the Daily is often “Old Style by Osmosis”. If you hear about home made bread (or some other recipe) often enough eventually most people will have a go.
(Or is it just that things take a while to work their way into my skull and everyone else is much more on the ball?:D )
The Daily Thread makes Old Style warm and accessible to people who might otherwise find it strange and difficult.
OS can be a journey after all, and we’re not all “equally OS” Some of the people “just posting about their lives or hanging the washing out” may have come a long way.
I have a friend who was so excited about “pegging out the washing like a proper housewife” once she had a garden rather than using the dryer that she bought a Cath Kidston Peg Bag and Pinny to do it with. There’s nothing mundane about hanging out wet washing to her cos it’s new and the novelty hasn’t worn off yet. I think that’s true of a lot of us to whom OS does not come naturally!(I still want to put up bunting and hire a sky writer if my family say they enjoyed something I cooked!)
I love coming to Old Style for its cosy friendly warm and welcoming atmosphere, but if there’s a thread that contains posts which don’t fit with that ethos then this is it. I appreciate that opinions vary, and I have thanked everybody for their contribution equally as I always do - but I would hate for anybody to think I am backing any of those posts which could be characterised as unkind.
What’s to stop anybody from starting a more rigorously on topic but general OS thread - on a daily basis? On DFW for example we have The Daily Chat and What small DFW things have you done today?
That's all I can really think of as a potential solution,

Hi I have only read a few of the posts on here, and I am sorry that folk get so cross about things. I have always found that the people on here have been both helpful and informative.
As many of you know the last 15 months haven't been the best for me healthwise, but thanks to the support and good wishes of folk on here that I will probably never meet in 'real life' but I do count as friends I have managed to keep my spirits up.
This particular forum seems to give different things to different people. It helps the sad,the lonely, the young Mums that want to learn, but don't like to ask in case they look 'daft' It has given back the one thing that so often is sadly missing from 21st century life, and that is 'community spirit' a rather pretentious PC expression I know, but what my late Mum would have called 'neighbourliness' So sometimes Mums will tell the rest of us about their kids or families , is that so bad.It says a lot for society today that the internet has replaced the 'over the garden fence' sort of chatting of the 1950s.
Today's young Mums lead busy and useful lives, and if they take a few moments out of their lives to learn something from their contempories or even an 'old dear' like me than I find that quite inspiring .
I have learned a lot from reading, and being on here and have never felt 'different' just because I am probably old enough to be most of your 'grans'
No, I like the 'Daily OS and probably I am just as much to blame for going a bit 'off topic', but my life does involve my family, and my grandchildren, as that is part of what makes me what I am.
I do hope that we all continue to learn from each other and to be there for each other when times or good or bad.
In the coming months we will all need to learn quite a bit about 'belt-tightening' to get through the credit crunch. a large proportion of folk on here have never had to do this, so OS will soon become a way of life for many of them.
keep up the good work folks, and if I digress from the topic at hand then just ignore the ramblings of a 'dotty old dear'
meanwhile to all of those who have helped me over the past few years thank you

Thank you for all the constructive comments on this topic. Pink-winged and I have read them carefully and pulled out the following statistics:
104 people posted on this thread. Of those:- 59 wanted the Daily to stay as it is
- 20 wanted more Old Style discussion and less non-OS chat
- 25 posted but gave no indication of their wishes
Obviously, if someone has difficulties in their life, then Old Style posters are here to give help and support; no-one wants to take that away.
If we can keep the posts of a broadly Old Style nature, then there'll be no further complaints.
Hopefully we can all put this behind us and move onThis thread will be closed later today.
Best wishes, Penny and Pink x:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
two very good posts (as always) from Jacks and JackieO :T:T
I love the OS community and I'm proud to be a part of it
Thanks PP and PW... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I don't usually read it myself as I have looked at it and, as it seems to be just chat rather than tips, feel it is not for me and don't bother looking at it.
Therefore, my view is that if you don't like the thread, just don't read it!0 -
I am happy to try and keep my posts old style with a little bit of chat:D
I really enjoy knowing what everybody is up to ( its so easy to live in your own insular world and I find this thread takes me out of that and see what else is going on in other parts of the country )0 -
I've been away so hadn't realised this thread had been started.....
I think that the OS Daily is a good thing to have, yes it has its gossip & chat alongside hints tips & ideas, but so would a chat over a garden fence or in the corner shop....isn't that what it is all about? Personally I don't need to post everyday as I am lucky enough to be able to get out & have social contact in my day at work - quite a few regulars are not so lucky through circumstances like illness or locality. I think some of these people are the ones for whom the thread is their only contact with others during their day and it would not be fair to remove that opportunity, so I would like it to stay as it is (but then again I'm not always good with change!)
I don't really know what else to suggest, but as some have said - if you don't like the tone / content, then you don't have to read and/or post, it's your choice. I must admit the "thanks" thing irritates sometimes, but I appreciate that it is as much to keep track of where readers are up to than thanking for a useful post.
Thanks for the work you Mods all do - we do appreciate it, honest!
Floss xx0
