Calling Old Stylers; what are your views on the Daily Thread?

  • Hi

I have read this thread from the start and to be honest I can understand most points of view. There has been a lot of nastiness from all sides!

I have occaisionally ventured on to the thread but have never stuck around for long as I think it can be very hard to keep up with..... BUT when I realised this, I just didn't read the thread anymore! My choice.

I know that lots of people have said that it is too cliquey and newcomers are ignored but from my experience I was made to feel welcome. Its the same as in real life, you need to try and get involved and join in with the banter.

By the looks of it, when you make the effort it is more than worthwhile.

I tend to agree with having an extra thread..... one for what OS things have you done today and one chatty thead. I think that we should stay away from what can and can't be posted as the friendly relaxed style of this board is what attracts people and to change that would alter the dynamics of this whole board.

Thank you to everyone on here who has helped me become more OS..... I look forward to many more tips and hints from you all

  • I don't agree that this has a playground feel to it. The vast majority of posters on this thread have given an objective view of the Daily. As far as I can see, all the current posters on the thread have being very civil despite the variety of views they hold
    Hi HariboJunkie,
Thank you for your comments, once again I agree with you, as a relatively new poster (should that read long-term lurker) you have all with 1 exception been most civil and polite in your responses to me and for that I am truly appreciative.
My comments regarding the "playground" feel were at no time directed towards the Board Guides or many of the other members here and were inspired when I directed an innocent question to a member of the board and another replied inviting me to go "through" her.
At the end of the day I was asked for my opinion, I gave it and I stand by it.
I think that the Daily thread does indeed serve a valid purpose however the endless rounds of in my opinion unnecessary "Thanks" and Hugs make it feel like a "closed shop" to a lurker and sometimes poster.

    Thanks again for your reply

I no longer post on the daily as i felt it was getting too much of non os chat all the time, too much hi's and hugs to everyone that i just couldnt keep up anymore, granted people like chatting about their day but it has now come to much

i loved the daily when i first found it, when queenie and co were on it, got such great tips and loved hearing about the os things they were doing and getting loads of tips etc from experienced oldstylers, i now see no point to the daily now

every once in a while this discussion comes up, everyone says sorry we will keep to os but then it will revert to the way it was

Fellow os'ers have left too, so it isn't just me

i hope the daily can get sorted but i very much doubt that it will, sorry if you dont like that but those are my views, missing people who i loved hearing about were queenie, math, squeaky who now no longer post, math maybe once in a blue moon;)

That's quite ok to wish that it was like it was in the old days but if you are going to bag the thread now and what people post you have to look at what you post as well. What is your content? Is it inspirational to other posters in the OS dept?

I think there always will be a point to the daily. Obviously you have benefited it from the past and I"m sure many others will do so in the future.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

    Hi everyone,

Well, its that time of the year when the OS board needs some clarification, because it has 'lost its way' a bit!!!!

Firstly, im another of the long time posters who doesnt post as much now, for a couple of reasons, The first one is real life, im now looking after a baby who takes up a lot of my time, so i dont get on the computer as much as i did.
Secondly, the OS daily has become too much chat - i feel unless something has either gone wrong in my life, or something really good has happened then there is no reason for me to post, as its just lost in amongst everything else.

I would like to see the thread go back to what it was meant to be - a chat for OS people. Whatatwit, yes, we do want to see -
    WM on,
    DW on,
Beds made etc as it encourages others to do things, reminds people that there might be a job they should be doing and i used to find by listing what i needed to do, encouraged me to do it. This is what the OS thread used to be about.

I also liked it when we used to put what we were eating that day ie -

    breakfast - weetabix
    lunch - ham sandwich
    dinner - veg lasagne

It gives ideas as to what others could make, and if something sounds nice, you can request the recipe - which is what used to happen.

Of course, along with these OS bits, you then mention anything else happening that day - this is where the over the garden fence part comes in, to compliment the OS stuff - i just think at the moment the garden fence has taken over the OS and we needed reminding that the OS stuff should be the priority!!!!

I would hate to think that if someone was having a particularly bad day, or a really good day, they felt they couldnt post it on the daily, on the odd day i do read now, i still look out to see how PP or smokey are, - it has a wonderful support network around it, but i do think that the OS part needs dragging back in, this is the OS board after all!!! Its just now there is so much chat, i dont have time to read it, and maybe miss some important things that might be happening, due to all the chit chat about anything and everything, rather than the important and OS things.

I hope ive managed to put all this into the right words!!!

Sorry - I haven't read the whole thread but gather that there are many different points of view. for my part I like it as it is. I have never found it cliquey. if i wanted to ask something specific I would and have started a thread so that my query does't get lost. Those who like the chit chat could go to the Arms I suppose but it can be a scary less cosy place to be.

i have been supported here and hope that I have been able to support others with things that wouldn't quite fit into another board. i've also had a lot of laughs along the way. surely there is space for a daily thread which may or may not always be OS - along side the more specific threads. (I speak as one of the worst offenders btw)

i forgot to say ...... a big thanks to the BGs

After browsing through all of these posts regarding the OS Daily Thread I find the following

Maybe sometimes things do seem more chatty rather than OS, but I would miss not having the Daily thread. I may not post very often but I always enjoy catching up with what people have been doing/planning etc. There is generally a friendly banter between the posters, which you do not always get on some threads. I hope some middle ground can be reached where the majority of people are happy.

    Thanks
    Powie

  • I have only read the first couple of pages of this thread and am basically answering the original question of what people think about the daily thread.

When I first came to MSE my husband was having chemotherapy and things felt very difficult. It was actually much easier to say things on the Daily thread than it was to say them to friends and family and I found people to be welcoming and supportive. Although I didn't contribute greatly to the thread I took a lot of comfort from reading about other people's daily lives and it helped to keep me balanced and to feel less isolated. It isn't that I don't have a social life I hasten to add!

I am not sure that Old Style or indeed moneysaving is separate from one's everyday life or emotions and so I think it is fine for people to chat, post their achievements of the day, tips and support etc. in the Daily thread. My belief is that it can empower people to keep going with the Old Style ways sometimes. Many threads seem to develop a chatty element no matter which board they are on. No criticism of Board Guides, it is just human nature:smiley:

Although, I tend not to go to the Daily thread (but know that I could) I still feel it's best place is in OS as it is primarily supportive and encouraging. Discussion Time is a debating forum which whilst interesting is not quite the same.

    Hi everyone,
i feel the need to add my twopennorth here.

My opinion is that the daily should not change, it`s great the way that it is and although there are quite a lot of chatty posts (guilty here) this is the type of thing that makes the thread what it is.

If i need a recipe that i can`t find i post in the daily and ask if anyone has it, a reply is usually quick so i don`t need to spend hours searching other threads. If i want to find a new recipe i shall go to a thread which contains lots of them.

I`ve learnt so much on the daily thread and i wouldn`t feel comfortable asking some of the questions that i need to ask in other places, the thread is always friendly and comfortable just the way an old style thread should be.

I do feel that it is a shame that past posters have fallen by the wayside and i do hope that they come back but on the other hand things change and peoples lifestyles and time commitments alter so maybe that is why some people don`t post much anymore. If everyone posted on the daily that have done for the last number of years and new posters did too then we would probably have 500 posts per day of people letting us know that the wm was on - no other bits and bobs would be allowed and what would be the point of that :D

I`ve always been made to feel welcome and part of the online community even though i know none of the contributors to this wonderful place in real life, i spend most of my time at home and work alone and this thread is my lifeline. I have learned all that i do in my home from this thread, every now and again i venture elsewhere but don`t like the nastiness on some of the other parts of mse, I do hope that people like wannabe sybil & whatatwit continue to post.
It would be a shame that because some people have felt the need to complain that things have to change, if i complain to the powers that be and tell them i don`t like the price of gas now will i get the price put back to how it was? all things evolve.
I haven`t been able to find a thread old enough to compare properly with years gone by but the ones that i did find were very similar, bit more chat now but that is part of the OS Daily life
Quote from the sticky Hi, this is the OS Daily thread . It is an 'over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything OS and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an OS natter. The more the merrier! end of the quote

Maybe the sticky should change a little and not the thread?
Sorry for my rambling disjointed post, i do hope that i`ve not upset anyone.
It`s late and i`ve been awake for almost 19 hours and feel the need to pop back onto the daily before bed.

    Good evening.

I didn't manage to get on the site until this evening ( family emergency. Oh sorry, nobody wants to know that do they?) I haven't even glanced at the Daily, this thread was top and I started here. 10 pages, straight through and I could weep at the bitterness that has come out.

Yes I'd agree the Daily can be too long, with too many very chatty, long posts. But I think 90% of us have done that at times, I certainly have, and I'm not naming names but an awful lot of the complainers should think back to their own posts at times. I would hate to see the thread moved to the Arms. A snowball in Hell would have a better chance of survival.

Personally, I'm not that enamoured of photos etc unless they're of things like Aussie's latest sewing triumph, or Penny's cakes, Troo's piggies.........you get my drift, but as long as they're kept for special occasions I think they're fine :D (I'll admit it, I love to have a nosy into other folk's lives. That would be sticky beak to you Aussie:p Oops am I showing my cliquey side.... yes Aussie and I are friends) And if we are to have "beefcake" photos, can I put in a request for more manly men, I'm not a fan of "pretty boys" ( most of whom wouldn't want anything to do with a woman anyway :rotfl: ) prefer my men a bit more "lived in" ( or should that be worn out:p )

I agree OS should be the backbone of the thread, but to read some of today's posters it will be confined only to those who are 100% hardcore oldstylers. Wannabe Sybil has stated she shouldn't be there because she doesn't do a lot of OS. Well I'll sit with you Sybil on the outcast step, because while I do a lot of OSing, I'm not nearly hardcore enough for a strict code of conduct.

Occasionally there is too much that is only between 2 or 3 posters. But that's preferable to me, than the poster who wants to recount all of their day, while not even taking the time to send a message of support or even acknowledgement to a previous poster who has just said their leg has dropped off, or they are about to lose the house.

My vote would be keep the posts down, edit your previous post where appropriate ( this won't work if you're replying to something half a page further on) and try to refrain from doing 3 posts to answer 3 different posters. Incidentally, when quoting people it's preferable to shorten the quote down to just the relevant part;) Sometimes I see a half page quote, and the person just wants to answer the last sentence. This won't lessen the number of posts but will shorten the amount to be read :D
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

That is why I love this forum.. we make friends... real live bonafide friends... and I do love to see that... even if it means others are left out. Even queen of the unsociable me... :D

I have also seem family 'in' jokes on here.. between siblings, mum and daughter, cousins... are these to be banned too??

I still say leave it just as it is and those whon want to join in can and those who don't don't have to.. same as all the other threads.. and I think they are a mean and nasty and utterly revolting bunch in the arms.. they twist everythign to vulgarity and crudity.. it is warm and soft and snuggly over here... like a handknitted aram sweater.
