Calling Old Stylers; what are your views on the Daily Thread?

Options
Hi there! Recently, the Board Guides have been receiving comments about the Old Style Daily thread. The Old Style Daily thread was intended to be full of Old Style tips, motivation to live in an Old Style way, and ideas to incorporate Old Style into our daily lives.

These are some of the comments received:

© The Daily has now become a thread about people’s lives, be they Old Style or not.

© Several long-standing posters have stopped contributing, as they feel the thread is no longer relevant to them.

© Many posters feel that the Daily Thread on the Old Style board has become more of a support group, rather than a place to discuss our Old Style days.

© Some people say that they post about Old Style things, which are just ignored amongst the general chat.

© It has been mentioned that people who want to chat about general topics have plenty of places to do so (such as Discussion Time or The Money Savers Arms) but Old Stylers have nowhere else to go.

Pink-winged and I have discussed this at length, but are at a loss to know how to satisfy everyone.

Please will contributors, old and new, and any lurkers out there, let us have their comments and we’ll do our best to come up with a solution that suits to the vast majority of Old Style posters.

What do you want to see in the Old Style Daily?

Pretty much what you and Pink said Penny
I try and post on a daily basis but quite often think why am I bothering as it's hard to read the OS stuff in amongst all the chit chat and whilst some chit chat is fine (I even do it) it's becoming more chit chat and nothing else

© The Daily has now become a thread about people’s lives, be they Old Style or not. I'm guilty of this, will try harder :o

© Several long-standing posters have stopped contributing, as they feel the thread is no longer relevant to them. But I can see their point.

© Many posters feel that the Daily Thread on the Old Style board has become more of a support group, rather than a place to discuss our Old Style days. I agree. If you want support then go to the right board.

© Some people say that they post about Old Style things, which are just ignored amongst the general chat. I agree.

© It has been mentioned that people who want to chat about general topics have plenty of places to do so (such as Discussion Time or The Money Savers Arms) but Old Stylers have nowhere else to go. A lot of people, not just OSers - I've seen it on lots of other boards too - INSIST on posting on 'their' board cos it feels like home. They won't go anywhere else. It's almost like each board is a separate website, with boards running other boards down. We're ALL MSE'rs, so people who do this, stop being silly :p

Pink-winged and I have discussed this at length, but are at a loss to know how to satisfy everyone.

    I don't think you'll satisfy everyone, it's impossible :D

In the beginning, it was mostly OS with a bit of people's lives thrown in, now it's the other way round.

I've pinched this from Squeaky, perhaps it could be incorporated into the daily 'sticky' so the rules are clear, without seeming bossy :D

    What is Old Style?

Old style is about taking charge of the money you have saved elsewhere on MoneySavingExpert by using the many ideas collected here. It's about taking control of the home areas of your life. Essentially what used to be known as Home Economics, or Domestic Science.

Old style isn't all OLD. We're happy to use modern up to date things like Slow Cookers, Microwaves, Breadmakers and more. We like to re-use, reduce, re-cycle. We save money (and, by coincidence time and energy) by cooking double and freezing. That way you always have some "ready meals" in the freezer for those days we all have when we don't feel like cooking.

What's OLD about this forum is that we try not to rely on ready made instant meals. We try to shop with thrift in mind and not blindly throw the nearest and easiest thing into the shopping basket and barely glance at the total in the till as we hand over our credit card.

We try to set and keep budgets, plan meals, find ways to use up leftovers, and some often very inventive ways of using up those food items that are hiding in the back of the fridge and the cupboards before they go out of date (or mouldy and 'orrible) and have to be binned.

Old style isn't just about cooking. We can help rescue those disasters from spills and accidents that would otherwise have you paying huge cleaning and laundry bills. We can recommend household gadgets/equipment that we know from experience "do wot it sez on the tin" before you set off to the shopping boards to find yourself the best deal. And more. Much more.

I don't usually get involved in things like this but the daily thread does annoy me. I love this board but never look at the [STRIKE]thanking[/STRIKE] daily thread. It reminds me of those corners at playgroups where established mums would congregate while their children wandered aimlessly or caused havoc. I know this sounds harsh but, for me, it's the worst part of the board and belongs on the Arms board. I'll get me coat ...

lol at the thanking thread :D

I use the thanks because I want to say 'hi' but have nothing else to say to the person at the time - well, nothing useful anyway :D

it has become like magazine chat and I stopped contributing and rarely bother to read it. No useful tips in it these days just time wasting

I absolutely love the Old Style Board and used to post on the Daily thread for a short while. The reason that I stopped is for what others have already stated.

Although it's great to read about other people's lives - and also to see the way people are supportive of each other with problems - I was finding it very hard to find OS hints/tips among the chat.

Hope my comment hasn't offended anybody :).

    I think you're right!:D
I tend to agree with some of the above comments but like Troo am as guilty as everyone else of posting non OS stuff. The length of the daily is a bit off putting sometimes and if I've been at work all day its just too much to catch up on but I do like to follow what people are doing too!
I personally will try and keep to the OS subject as much as possible from now on although a bit of other stuff may creep in now and again!:D
Pink and Penny - good luck!;)
    Do what you love :happyhear
  • Difficult one. As Troo says you will never please everyone. It is a real shame those regular posters have faded away, they were a huge part of the reason why I started posting on the daily.

I enjoy the mix of OS stuff & chat (although occasionally I agree the chat can get a little extended). OS is the only forum I look at generally, as others so often seem to get nasty - this seems to be the only place where people are always pleasant to each other!

I am aware that some people do rely (not sure if that is the right word) on being able to come & chat to this group of online friends, and in amongst that talk about OS too. It's what keeps them going and I think it would be very unfair to take that away completely.

In among that talk about daily lives is usually something along the lines of "making xxx in the BM, got the WM on, going to make & freeze double of xxx" and so on.

I suppose I'm saying I don't know, but I would be very sad not to be able to check in most days with a lovely bunch of people on OS - not elsewhere on the board, as I'm always spotting little tips/recipes, etc.

Anyhow, gotta go for now. Might come back & add later if anything else springs to mind.

Edit: also, there are LOADS of other OS threads for more specific stuff too - I did think that the daily was about DAILY lives too...????
