Ugh I think the baby blues have hit :( I'm dead tearful today. I'm also a bit worried, when I was in hospital the midwife said I had a superficial perineal tear, she was in two minds if she should bother to put a stitch in or not. In the end she made it sound so slight i said that it wasn't sore so she decided not to bother. Now today, 7 days post birth I am feeling dead sore and itchy down there, so after my bath I got a mirror and had a look. i was horrified, the tear is complete front to back and has healed quite a bit in a big gaping V shape to the anal muscle sorry if tmi. I burst into tears, I feel deformed. Trouble is I doubt stitching now would do much good as it's healed almost completely. I know it's silly and I do have a lot of hormonal emotions going on but everytime I think about it, it makes me cry... talk about being left with a clowns pocket... sigh.

On top of that I have totally lost my appetite, I can't face food at all which isn't helping the milk supply at all. I managed to eat a couple of slices of toast today but that's it. Yesterday I forced down a mars bar just for the calories, I am still taking a multi vitamin so hopefully there is some nutrients going into the milk but i'm not getting much at all from expressing and have had to supliment it with a few bottles of formula because otherwise the poor child would starve.

oh toto, other than ((hugs)) i really dont know what to say. i'm not a mum yet so haven't experienced anything like you are talking about so i wouldn't want to comment out of turn.

to keep your milk supply up you need to be at least drinking plenty can you face a glass of milk? I know its not the "thing" to say but if you think it will make you feel better there is nothing wrong with giving up on the breast milk. I personally wish I'd tried harder with b/f first time but it was what was the best thing for chris at the time, I'd gone off eating to and then felt useless for not being able to b/f

    Don't cry.
Itching is good, as it means it's healing. If you are still under midwife care, show her next time she comes. If not, make an appointment to see your doctor, or wait until your 6 week check. A couple of friends have had repairs at between 3 & 6 months post birth, & both said it was fine, & recovery was much easier & faster than first time round. It can be fixed!

As for your milk supply, oats are meant to be great for this. Start the day with porridge (with maple syrup...yum) and munch your way through a pile of flapjacks throughout the day. :D

If oats are good, I recommend twinks hobnobs! :D

*hugs* for Toto. Hope you feel brighter soon.. :)
  • And if you really can't force any food down, don't panic! Just as when you were pregnant and baby got your nutrients first, your milk will still be perfectly fine. You would have to be seriously malnuorished before it started affecting your milk. Think of all the women in developing countries who don't know where their next meal is coming from, if they can manage it then you substituting a couple of meals with a mars bar isn't going to be the end of the world. You might find in a couple of day you become the complete opposite and can't stop eating!

Completely agree with Sooz re the tear, get the midwife to have a little peak. If it's healing well then I'm sure it will be fine, these things always tend to look worse than they are. If the midwife thought it was bad she would of put a stitch in without a second thought.

How are you getting on with getting baby to latch on? Any joy?

  • Oh, Toto, glad you are feeling a bit better now xxx

No one has ever checked my stitches :o as the only person to ask was the first MW to homevisit but I declined as I hadn't had a bath! God only knows what has gone on down there :rotfl:.

    xx
  • Ooh SB, when I was in hospital mine got checked half a dozen times (was a bad tear though) It came to the point where I just offered to show them to anyone that peeked round the curtain.... Bounty photo lady wasn't too impressed mind...
