"Also how many burn both DVD- and DVD+ formats... this time last year there were barely any that did....again saves on the confusion of different formats as long as you don't by DVD-RAM."
Are you kidding. DVD-RAM is the only reliable way of re recording there is. I use all ways, DVD-RW & + R/W sooner or later, mostly sooner they let you down, I have a PVR that has let me down several times (THEY ALL DO) but in the 3 years I've had DVD-RAM I've never been let down once. Today I'm getting the Panasonic DMR DS20. This has Freeview & DVD-RAM & I wouldn't swap it for ten of these old technology DVD recorders without Freeview.Nice to save.0 -
Whoa there....
I know what you are saying... I quoted DVD-RAM because it is the one format that is not supported... but lots of other DVD recorders don't support RAM...
As good or bad a deal as this is I won't be getting one because I have my sights on a Samsung DVD-R125 which both upscales via HDMI and uses DVD-RAM...so I know all about the technical benefits of RAM over the others....
The Targa does of course have a hard disk though and I'd hazard a guess that most people will use that for recording rather than any dvd's.
I have no need to record freeview but if I wanted to I could feed it into any DVD player via scart (though not be able to change/record dffferent channels) from my Samsung LE32R41BDX TV0 -
OK, most of this is going over my head, so in simple terms, will it let me pause live digital tv as in SKY or NTL or Freeview while recording ? I really only need the DVD for archiving off things I'd like to keep (not much), we tend to record to watch later in the week. Also will it change digital tv channels ? Or do I need to set the channel reminder thingy ? (Yes thats a technical term
)

Well you have two choices... record to the hard disk or a DVD disk...
The easiest and probably most common choice will be the hard disk because at 160GB it has around 33 times the storage of a standard single layer DVD-/+R. Where the DVD recording part will be useful is if you want to copy from your hard disk to the DVD to then share it with someone else or make multiple copies.
For example if you had a DV camcorder but no computer, you could copy the DV format video from the camcorder to the Targa hard disk. Once on the Targa you can do basic scene editing and then finally record the results onto DVD.
The DVD recorder does support Timeslip (only to the hard disk I believe), in other words you can pause any input source in it's tracks (obviously it is still running but the Targa is recording the scenes you are not watching). When you unpause the recording will kick in a play what you have missed.
You will have probably seen us mention DVD-RAM... this is another DVD format that the Targa DOES NOT support... but one benefit of DVD-RAM is that you can Timeslip directly to the DVD-RAM disc.0 -

It doesn't do digital. Analogue 5 channels or feed in from a digital box but in any case you can only watch what is being recorded or use the TV's built in tuner.
If you want Freeview then buy a twin tuner PVR- about £100 now. You can pause live tv and still be recording another programme in the background. For the same with Sky I think you have to buy their Sky + box and pay an exorbitant subscription just to watch 10 minutes of adverts in every hour..
I use my digital pvr all the time for timeshifting and to store a range of programmes for those nights when the telly is cr*p. I only watch a programme once so for me there is no need to burn DVD's.qui tacet consentire -
