Cash for old unwanted broken jewellery

Here is a quick word of warning...
My Mother-in-Law left my wife a fair amount of jewellery when she died. We are currently experiencing some financial difficulties and my wife therefore decided to sell the jewellery.
She saw the Got Gold Get Cash (Ramsdens) advert on TV, and decided to go with them. She gathered the jewellery together, sent it off to them, and they came back with a weight and valuation for what was sent to them.
147 grams, which totalled £637
She accepted their offer, and is currently waiting for their cheque to arrive. In the meantime, I decided to go on their website to find out why it had to be a cheque, and why they couldn't pay via BACS.
I noticed on their website that they offer (as at 23/3/09) £4.00 a gram for 9ct gold. They only offer cheque as a means of payment.
I then decided to check other (scrap gold) websites to see what their payment terms were. Imagine my surprise when I noticed that all/most others offered BACS payment as standard, AND were offering SUBSTANTIALLY more than £4.00 a gram!
As an example, here is a comparison between Got Gold Get Cash, and Falkos Gold :-
GGGC - 147g 9ct @ £4.00/g = £588.00
FG - 147g 9ct @ £7.33/g = £1077.51 a difference of £489.51!!!
I know that it's my wife's fault for not checking the market, and it's too late for us now we have accepted the offer from GGGC, but someone else might be more lucky, and might notice this warning before they go ahead and lose money by dealing with GGGC.0 -

Good Luck
I can also vouch for this company, very quick and efficient and quite good rates paid per gram.
You do have to pay the special delivery postage yourself but they will email you within 24 hours and payment in to your bank account is immediate:j:kisses:0 -
:A I just want to say thank you so much to miss_angie1 for this thread and also mainepuddytat for the Hatton Garden Metal link. :A
I did order an envelope from the we buy gold website, but as it never arrived I decided to take a risk and post it off to Hatton Garden. They have contacted me today to tell me the broken and battered old bracelets, necklaces and rings with missing stones are worth £240 :j :j :j
Last year I took these to a local jeweller who advertised he bought old gold and was offered the pricely sum of £32 pound. I am so gald I said no to them.
I really am over the moon, Hatton garden were so quick and easy to deal with.
Anyone hesitating out there just go for it while the price is so good!

After reading these posts, I decided to give Hattongardenmetals a try...
Ive posted my 190g chain to them and they are trying to say it only weighs 186g. I know its only 4g difference, but by their current prices, that works out at nearly £30 difference.
If they skim a few grams here and there from their customers, then they are probably making a small fortune! I am guessing after posting gold to them, most customers decide not to ask the company to send the gold back due to a high hassle factor.
I asked them to post the gold back which they did...
Out of interest, has anybody else had any similar experiences with online scrap gold buyers?
Currently looking for someone who I can take my gold to in person with similar prices. Does anybody have any recommendations? Im based in Essex.0 -
Just to update you all...
I popped into Falkos Jewellers (falkosgold.co.uk) yesterday... Oh my god, I am so glad I did. I didn't think I would have so much fun selling scrap gold!
It's a family run business and the staff are all friendly and polite. The staff seem to banter with each other constantly and just encourage customers to join in with them.
It was quite busy in the shop with about 5-6 customers all queueing up to scrap their gold when I got there but with all the staff constantly teasing each other and the general banter going on, time flew.
Their weights and prices were spot on and they paid me in cash.
Gold seems to have dropped in value at the moment with all online gold buyers offering around £6.90 per gram - Bummer! I only wish that I had found Falkos sooner.0 -
After reading this i thought i would look up what i could possibly get for a opal and sapphire ring i was given by an ex . First ring i found looks idential to mine and is being sold by the company already discussed through ebay its a small world.

I also have a 9kt gold delicate (as in not chunky) bracelet thats broke looks a simple fix.. It has 6 fairly common charms on it. Would you scrap it if you had it or get it repaired or take charms off and sell individually? It was my sisters long story but cheeky wench swapped hers for mine when she broke hers and owned up 2 years later returning mine and said to keep hers.0 -

what did your bracelet actually weigh - as i used hatton garden metals and they told me that i had added 2 18ct gold rings in with the 9ct - i was well impressed with the service as that earned me extra money for my holiday :beer:0 -
