  • Hello i wish to take a moment to discuss my gold chain selling experience. I had an 18ct gold chain, initially i thought about ebay and sell it as scrap gold as it was broken - sadly the ebay prices weren't all that and after I looked at the ebay fees and paypal fees i decided i needed another option. My friend sold his gold chain to cashforyourgold.co.uk - however after reading many internet forums a lot of people complained how they they tended to cheat customers of a gram here and there - ethically i didnt like the sound of this - i read a lot of good things about Hatton Garden Metals but wanted to see if i could take a walk around the jewelry shops around Hatton Garden - I went to about 20 of these and was disappointed at the level of honesty and professionalism they showed - I decided on saturday to send off my gold chain to Hatton Garden Metals and Monday at 11am I received a confirmation from Gary of Hatton Metal Gardens the funds were in my account - and true to his word everything turned out well - I got exactly what i was quoted on the website right down to the penny - I have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone - I have enormous respect for businesses who conduct themselves ethically and this is one of the few that treat the customers right - many thanks :0 their website is hattongardenmetals.com

daft question....... how can i tell whether the gold/silver jewellery is actually gold/silver.... ie i cant find any hallmarks.

one website said check using fridge magnet.... but most of the stuff i have sticks to the magnet even stuff with the hallmark on?

so im stumped, i dont mind sending it all in, and letting them decide but i am aware that they could stitch me up...

    any thoughts any one?
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

Take all the gold coloured stuff to your nearest pawnbroker with the pretence you are going to pawn it. They will test it in front of you to determine if it is real or not by doing an acid test. Don't bother with the silver. No-one is interested unless you have it by the ton.

Bear in mind that some real gold is not hallmarked and fake stuff can often have a mark inside to fool buyers.

Once you have determined the good from the bad, I'd go with Hatton Metals ( after telling the pawnbrokers that they are not offering enough :) )

    Hope this helps.

Thanks to all who recommended Hatton Scrap Metals.

    http://www.hattongardenmetals.com/

I was worried about using an online service, and don't like pawn shops. But i knew MSE members would know the best ones, and after checking prices, i was right.

I posted my gold on Saturday 9th August 2009, and the money was in my account Monday morning 11th August 2009. Hows that for service.

One thing i would say, is if you have gold in good conditon, as mine was as it had never been worn, then it is worth more as jewellery. That is why they want the gold for, to make things with. So i have no doubt mine was worth more as a chain, and will probably be resold as such, but i just wanted quick cash. But you could maybe try a jewellery shop or Ebay, with the scrap price as your lowest limit. There is also a firm in Scotland(http://www.webuyoldgold.co.uk/index.html) that claim to give the price as jewellery if more than scrap, but they gave no indication of their prices. so i went with Hatton.

Anyway, I got £146 - exactly as their online calculator stated, and i am one happy lad. I would highly recommend them. :T

I took in some old gold and silver jewellery to Jewellery Doctor in Dundee (the ones whose website is we buy old gold) and they were great. Waited about 10 minutes while the guy looked through the stuff then he came back with the things that weren't any use to him and over £100 for the bits he did want - was surprised I even made that amount. Am looking through even more cupboards now in case I missed any pieces!

I tried an experiment today(yesterday)...I took five pieces of gold to town with me, to try and find out what i could get for it......

There was a thickish mans chain, a heavy initial ring, a damaged bracelet, a squashed ring and a charm...I had not weighed it, and had no idea of the scrap price...

I went into Albermarle and Bond and was offered £215....

I then went into Ramsdens and was offered £120....I looked at the assistant disgustingly....she asked me if that was acceptable...I told her I had been offered double that only 200 yards down the road......after talking to her colleague, she said..............."ok...we can match that".......WOW £120 increase .......what a rip off these places must be........

and a guy standing in another window next to me had just accepted their first offer of £150 for his......
    Couponing....."every little hurts"

  • I had 85 grams of broken and out of fashion 9ct gold items. Local buyers offerred between £4.85 and £5.00 per gram. I registered online with Scrapgold.uk. Downloaded an address label and sent items special delivery last Monday. They received gold on Tues and sent out cheque same day which I received Thursday for £504. They had disregarded 5 grams which consisted of watch workings and a cheap bangle which had metal in in. They then paid me £6.88 a gram less 8% refining charge. This was slightly less than I would have got from Hattons but not a lot in it. I was impressed with the speed in which I got my money as I had been very dubious about using an on line service. A friend of mine took a large amount of gold to a local dealer and was offerred £3 a gram!!:D

On Monday I took some broken gold and silver (nothing that could be sold or repaired) into a jewellers at York who offered me £150 for the gold and was not interested in the silver, then into a visiting 'jewellery road show' offering to buy gold & silver at a local hotel, they offered £200 for the gold and £20 for the silver. Tuesday, (yesterday) at lunchtime I sent it off to Hatton Garden Metals after reading recommendations on here, and today (Wednesday) I have just checked my bank account(2pm) and the full amount of £379.62 has been paid in. I was emailed with the quote from their website (49g of gold and 180g of silver) so that I could follow any transaction with them, then emailed when the packet arrived. Their service and prices were excellent and I would recommend them to anyone.
ps. I have never posted a recommendation before, but was so pleased with their service- and no, I do not work for them or know anyone there personally!!
  • Last night I fished out all our old gold jewellery and bits and bobs that I'd collected over the years. (broken chains, odd earrings etc). I checked the online calculator for Hatton Garden metals (£900!!!! Shocked!!) Anyway, I posted it all off this morning special delivery (£6.50 - cheaper than I expected) and hopefully tomorrow will have something nice in the bank!.

Thanks to all the MSE'rs for posting their experiences. I'll let you know what happens as soon as I know.
